SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The amount of snow blanketing the Sierra Nevada is even larger than the 2017 snowpack that pulled the state out of a five-year drought, California water officials said.As of Thursday, the snowpack measured 202% of average after a barrage of storms throughout winter and spring, according to the Department of Water Resources. The wet weather has slowed but not stopped, with thunderstorms prompting flash flood warnings Sunday in the central and southern parts of the state. At this time last year, the snowpack measured 6% of average — making this year 33 times bigger than 2018, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. In 2017, the snowpack measured 190% of average. The snowpack supplies about 30 percent of state water needs. In the Tahoe Basin, Squaw Valley ski resort has seen so much snow it plans to keep its slopes open until least July 5. In May alone, Squaw recorded 37 inches (94 centimeters).State officials consider the most important snowpack measurement to be the one taken around April 1 because that's typically when storm activity subsides."And then after that the sun's highest position in the sky contributes to rapid melting. This year, that didn't happen and we had late season snow," National Weather Service forecaster Idamis Del Valle told the newspaper. This year's April 1 reading put the snowpack at 176% of average, making it the fifth-largest on that date, with records going back to 1950, the Chronicle said.___Information from: San Francisco Chronicle, http://www.sfgate.com 1528

SCOTTSDALE, AZ — A Scottsdale city councilman echoed the dying words of George Floyd on Wednesday while rallying supporters against mandates that would require masks and face coverings in public to limit the spread of the coronavirus."I can't breathe. I can't breathe," councilman Guy Phillips said as he removed a mask amid cheers from the crowd. The group was gathered at Scottsdale City Hall Wednesday morning to protest the requirement of face coverings and masks in public places.Phillips went on to tell the crowd that he would "happily wear a mask out of respect for my fellow citizens, but when government threatens me with fines or possible arrests if I don't conform, then I protest.""We are not in Russia! We are in the USA. We can make our own choices," he said.Several high-ranking politicians in Arizona denounced Phillips' comments."Councilman Phillips' comments at his anti-mask protest rally today at City Hall do not represent the values of our Scottsdale community," Scottsdale Mayor Jim Lane (R) said on Twitter. "I share the profound disappointment expressed by many residents at the words Mr. Phillips chose- to use the phrase 'I can't breathe' during this moment in time was callous and insensitive. I sincerely hope he understands how wrong that was and offers a sincere apology." 1311

"He was seconded to an elite protection brigade within the Royal Guard to serve as the personal security force of [the crown prince]," a Saudi source told CNN.Mutreb appeared in photographs alongside bin Salman during the crown prince's tour of the United States earlier this year.Several US officials have told CNN that any operation involving members of the crown prince's inner circle could not have happened without his direct knowledge. 937

Schaefer's Schnauzers in Derby, New York can have eight to 10 Miniature Schnauzers in one home at any time. The puppies are more expensive than adopting, but are brought up in a social setting and are matched with the right families after they turn eight months old.Sandy Schafer has been breeding pups for over 20 years. She said a good breeder will take the time to make sure a puppy is ready to live in a new home, and will take care in picking the right family for each one. She said a breeder should have as many questions for you as you have for the breeder.Adopting a dog, on the other hand, has a variety of positives. Gina Browning of the SPCA serving Erie County, New York said the emotional benefits in adopting a pup are immense, especially because you're giving them a second chance at life. Also, the cost is much cheaper, and the dog will be spayed and neutered by the time it comes home with you.Since the SPCA serving Erie County moved to its new location on Harlem Road in West Seneca, Browning said traffic coming in is better than ever. Schafer said while she doesn't have any dogs available for sale right now, she has a waiting list 20 people long. 1223
