SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Fans packed the SDCCU Stadium for the Navy Notre Dame game, the focus for San Diegans revolving not on the friendly rivalry but the fight over what will happen to the landmark."This game is a big game and could be the last game here," Darren Hopkins, 13, said sitting next to his dad in the first row.Saturday night was the ninety-second game between Navy and Notre Dame and the crowd was very supportive of both sides."My dad's in the Navy but we're also big Notre Dame fans, so we're kinda split between," Darren said.The stadium hosted it's first football game in 1967, and fans tell 10News they love watching football here."It's good to see good football back in San Diego, I already miss the Chargers games and all the activities but it's really good to see there's some sports fans still here and they can fill the stadium it's really nice," Dan Hopkins said."A lot of energy here a lot of history here really wish the chargers were still in town but they're not, voting on Soccer City in November," San Diego local Kyle Uminger said.Both measures on the ballot call for a new stadium, either for San Diego State, or a soccer expansion team.Fans wish there was another option."I think that there's still so much spirit left in San Diego for a sports team, especially football, the entire stadium is filled up and it's just super loud and everyone is excited," Darren said.The vote will happen November 6th, 2018. 1480

Feeding San Diego is helping bridge the hunger gap in hopes of making it easier for active-duty military, their families, and veterans to get the food they need and deserve. Desiree Mieir is a mom of four. Her husband is currently serving his tenth year in the Navy. She says the high cost of living in San Diego makes it tough to survive here. "It's several dollars of a difference as far as gas goes. Milk, eggs, all your basic necessities," said Mieir. "If we want to go on a day trip, we have to make room in the budget for that." Now, every month, the family gets access to free food at Dewey Elementary School, one of Feeding San Diego's distribution sites. The access gives families some financial relief without compromising the kid's nutrition. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Dozens of San Diego short-term vacation rental hosts sounded off Wednesday against a bill that could limit how much they're able to rent out some of their properties on sites like Airbnb and VRBO.The hosts implored the California Coastal Commission to oppose the bill at its meeting on Shelter Island.The bill, by North County Assemblywoman Tasha Boerner Horvath, is specific to San Diego County's coastal zone and would sunset in five years. It would limit how much hosts can rent out their non-primary residences on sites like Airbnb and VRBO to 30 days a year. "I can't believe this has even come up as an actual bill," Airbnb host John Wilson told the commission.Hosts also said they are using the income to put their kids through college, and that their rentals provide families affordable, large accommodations near the coast, allowing visitors to avoid renting multiple hotel rooms and resort fees. But Boerner Horvath said the bill is needed because short-term rentals are adding to the region's housing supply crunch."When the upper level of housing stock is removed for short-term vacation rentals, the folks that would have actually lived there move down the market; they usually want to live in a certain area," she said. The bill passed the Assembly and is now scheduled for state Senate committee hearings. The legislation comes after an Airbnb-led signature drive essentially blocked restrictions the San Diego City Council approved in 2018. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Hours after Navy officials said all fires aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard were extinguished, smoke was visible coming from the vessel at Naval Base San Diego early Friday morning.Radio scanner traffic obtained by ABC 10News indicated crews at the scene reported at least two fires onboard the ship and called for evacuations at around 1 a.m. Friday. The 10News Breaking News Tracker observed smoke coming from the ship’s front end.At around 5 a.m., a Navy spokesperson confirmed to ABC 10News that no evacuations were ordered and all fires were out. The spokesperson said investigators were looking into the matter.On Thursday afternoon, Navy officials said all known fires aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard were declared out. The blaze on the ship erupted on the morning of July 12, and the firefighting efforts involving hundreds of crew members and thousands of aerial water drops took four full days.Navy officials said they will not know the exact cause of the fire until the ship can be inspected fully.ABC 10News learned Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Mike Gilday will be at Naval Base San Diego on Friday to inspect the USS Bonhomme Richard.During a Thursday afternoon press briefing, Rear Adm. Philip Sobeck described the 22-year-old ship as ravaged -- its melted aluminum superstructure bent at a 45-degree angle -- but not dead in the water."The ship can be repaired," he said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- High school sports in San Diego County and across California will happen during the 2020-21 school year but on a modified schedule that will push the start for fall sports, such as football, to early winter.The California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Monday released a schedule that shows the last date for Section and Regional/State Championships. Fall sports' championships, according to the schedule, shows end dates in March and April. The schedule shows spring sports, including soccer, basketball, and track and field, with championship end dates in May and June.CIF officials said that “most Section start dates will commence in December 2020 or January 2021.”In a press release posted on its website, the CIF San Diego Section said:The California Interscholastic Federation, San Diego Section (CIF-SDS) is excited to see the foundations of a plan to return high school athletics throughout the state of California for the 2020-2021 school year. Today’s announcement from the state office provides our section with the information necessary to finalize the calendars and schedules for all of our CIF regulated sports, while also acknowledging the importance of the health and safety of our student athletes and coaches by pushing the official start date back to align with the Roadmap to Recovery set by the state of California.Specifics of the plan provides for two seasons of sport, which will serve to maximize the length of each season while not eliminating any athletic opportunities in a reduced athletic calendar for the year. The adjusted calendar distributes the athletic offerings into a Fall/Winter Season, and a Spring Season in hope of balancing the opportunities for all student athletes.In collaboration with our Board of Managers, Conference Presidents, Sport Specific Advisory Committees and Officials Association, we will be coming together over the next couple weeks to finalize the dates and schedules for each of the seasons of sport for our section. [They’re] going to have to choose what sport they're going to want to play in that condensed season.”Otay Ranch High School football player Ethan Knight is excited that there is now a plan in place. "My birthday's in January, so it will be a good birthday present. I think it's great because it will be a new environment." Knight said he has used the months during the pandemic to train for the upcoming season.
