REDMOND, Wash. (AP) — Microsoft is buying the company behind popular video games The Elder Scrolls, Doom and Fallout. The software giant said Monday that it is paying .5 billion for ZeniMax Media, the parent company of video game publisher Bethesda Softworks. Microsoft said it is buying Bethesda in part to beef up its Xbox Game Pass game subscription service, which it says has over 15 million subscribers. Bethesda games, such as Starfield, which is currently in development, will launch on Xbox Game Pass the same day they launch on Xbox or computers. Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee completed a significant step in confirming President Donald Trump's pick for a new Supreme Court justice on Thursday, despite Democrats' attempts to throw up parliamentary roadblocks in an attempt to delay the process.The committee reconvened at 9 a.m. ET on Thursday — four hours earlier than was previously scheduled — and held a vote that sent Barrett's confirmation to the Senate floor. No Democrats were present for the vote, following the promise of Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-New York, who said Monday that they intended to "boycott" the vote.Committee rules require that a quorum — or a minimum number of senators from the minority party — be present at the meeting for a vote to take place. Republicans simply changed the committee rules and voted anyway.Schumer tweeted Wednesday that he will force a vote to adjourn the Senate until after the election. That vote will likely fail, given that Republicans control the Senate. He and other top Democrats will hold a press conference later on Thursday.According to The Washington Post, some Democrats placed cardboard cutouts of their constituents who have benefitted from the Affordable Care Act in their seats.Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says he plans to keep Senators in Washington through the weekend to focus on Barrett's confirmation. Raising the age of cigarette purchasing from 18 to 21 could have massive impacts on youth smoking. "This would be the number one thing I would do in New York state," Roswell Park Health Behavior Chair Dr. Andrew Hyland said. According to Hyland, if the age were to go up three years, the number of young smokers would decrease. "If you raise the age from 18 to 21 we're going to see 25% fewer kids becoming cigarette smokers" Hyland said. There would be less smokers due to the fact that 18 year old brains are still in development. Presidential candidate Joe Biden spoke out on Wednesday on the shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Blake was shot by police in Wisconsin on Sunday, causing unrest in Kenosha.Two officers from the incident have been placed on administrative leave. But protesters are calling for the officers to be fired and criminally charged for the shooting.Biden confirmed that he has talked to the Blake Family about the shooting.“What I saw on that video makes me sick,” Biden said. “Once again, a black man, Jacob Blake, been shot by the police in the broad daylight, the whole world watching”Biden said he told the Blake Family that “justice must and will be done.”While Biden applauded the protests, he decried the violence surrounding the protests. The violence culminated on Tuesday in the fatal shooting of two people. Police in Illinois arrested a 17-year-old in connection to the shootings.“As I said after George Floyd's murder, protesting brutality is a right and absolutely necessary, but burning down communities is not protest,” Biden said. “It's needless violence.
