SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Jessica Mattly was all smiles Thursday, ironically, thanks to the state Employment Development Department.“For the first time they called me,” she said. “I didn't call them. It was great.”A representative from the EDD, which issues unemployment insurance payments, called Mattly to tell her that they finally processed her application for jobless benefits. They’d begin by sending her four weeks of backpay.Mattly’s had been trying to get through to the EDD since she lost her job at a San Diego resort in late March, when Coronavirus restrictions went into effect. She filed for unemployment immediately, but like thousands of other San Diegans, got a request from the EDD for identity verification.She submitted the necessary documents, but never heard anything back.“I would just keep dialing, and keep dialing, and keep dialing, and I understand the definition of insanity. I do. And it felt like that was my only option,” she said.Mattly kept running into walls, until she turned to State Sen. Ben Hueso’s office, which contacted the EDD on her behalf.That lead to Thursday's phone call.Others, like Audee Kammer - just wouldn't take no for an answer.The EDD denied her identity documentation twice. She called hundreds of times - finally appealing the denials and getting a telephone hearing with a judge, who authorized payments.“I could see how some people, it could just throw them into deep depression and despair,” she said. “I feel for a lot of people out there that are in my same situation that I was and don't have the drive to keep knocking on that door.”Meanwhile, the latest state numbers show more than 230,000 San Diego County residents are unemployed.The EDD says its funding has increased drastically since the pandemic began and is now undertaking a massive hiring effort.It has filled 900 new positions to process an unprecedented amount of claims - with an additional 1,900 openings.Sen. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It's been 13 years since Filirican Torres died after being hit by a car on the 94 Freeway, and her family says every passing holiday and anniversary brings the pain back to the forefront."It feels like someone is stabbing you in the heart over and over again," says sister Edy Torres.Friday is the anniversary of the death, which is still unsolved. Now the Torres family is asking anyone with information to come forward and help them get closure."Maybe they heard something in the last 13 years," says Torres. "Maybe they heard her name or something came up. Help us out."The family says Torres was thrown from a car on the freeway on January 10, 2007, and then hit by several other cars on the road. It happened on the Eastbound lanes of the 94 in between Euclid Avenue and Kelton. At the time, San Diego Police called the death "suspicious." In 2009, Crime Stoppers released a photo of a white Geo Metro as a suspect vehicle, but they never made any arrests."She was a loving person," Torres says of her sister. "When you met her she would put a smile on your face. She had this aura where you would just gravitate to her."As they have for years, the family is putting up posters around the area where the crash took place."It's been 13 years," says Edy. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - In celebration of Dr. Seuss's birthday, and as part of "America Reads," the United Way of San Diego is holding a week-long book drive across San Diego County."Reading to children is the utmost important thing a parent can do," says United Way CEO Nancy Sasaki.The United Way will accept book donations at their office, and also at any SDCCU branch location across the county. They're also teaming up with Warwick's Book Store in La Jolla for donations.The need is most significant among low-income families. The United Way says 61% of low-income families in San Diego don't have any books in their homes for kids. That puts them at a significant disadvantage."If a kid is not at a 3rd-grade reading level by the end of third grade, we know they're four times more likely not to graduate high school on time," says Sasaki. "And if they come from low-income communities, they're six times more likely to fall behind."Studies show that reading to children as few as three times each week helps promote vocabulary and reading proficiency."In many family settings where the parents are working 2 or 3 jobs, and they're crossing paths in the night, and they're barely able to get the food on the table, reading is not so easy to do," Sasaki says. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It’s a win-win situation: a sale on airfares out of San Diego, with an ultimate destination of Hawaii. Southwest Airlines opened its flight schedule Wednesday for once-daily service out of San Diego. The flights travel to Kahului, Maui, starting Apr. 14, 2020. Flights to Honolulu begin Apr. 20, 2020, Southwest reports. Fares as low as 9 each way will be available on both routes for travel between Apr. 14 and June 4, 2020, according to the airline. The tickets must be purchased Oct. 30. "We're grateful for the steadfast loyalty of our San Diego Customers and we're adding a Southwest heading to their compass of nonstop options," said Andrew Watterson, Executive Vice President & Chief Revenue Officer for Southwest Airlines. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - In celebration of National Pool Opening Day and in anticipation of the summer season, San Diego leaders will hold a community water safety festival Saturday.The 10th annual "April Pools Day" event will be held at Bud Kearns Pool, at 2229 Morely Field Dr., featuring swim assessments, CPR demonstrations, and safety presentations to educate about safe water practices.The event will also hold a cannonball kickoff and giant inflatable obstacle course for kids.RELATED: National Pool Opening Day signals summertime swimmingThe community water festival is aimed at waterproofing San Diego, through a multi-step approach to drowning prevention, swimming lessons, and beach safety training.As San Diego readies itself for the summer, the Prevent Drowning Foundation of San Diego will also hold a number of free swimming lessons and CPR demonstrations around the county.
