SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A UC San Diego epidemiologist was named today to Time magazine's 2018 list of the 50 most influential people in health care.Dr. Steffanie Strathdee, associate dean of global health sciences at UCSD's School of Medicine, was recognized for her successful efforts last year to keep her husband, psychiatry professor Tom Patterson, from dying due to a drug-resistant bacterial infection the World Health Organization classifies as the world's deadliest.Strathdee urged the team of scientists and doctors to use an experimental treatment for the infection using bacteriophages -- small viruses that act as parasites to bacteria by infecting and neutralizing them."It's a great honor to be recognized for my efforts to bring phage therapy into the 21st century in North America, but it all started with my single-minded desire to save my husband's life, and it truly reflects a team effort," Strathdee said.The magazine's list honors people who "have changed the state of healthcare in America this year, and bear watching for what they do next."Patterson was the first American patient with a systemic infection to receive bacteriophage treatment, according to Robert "Chip" Schooley, the lead doctor on Patterson's treatment team. UCSD Health doctors have since treated five more patients with bacteriophages. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man held up a gas station in Mountain View and escaped on foot early today, police said.It happened just before 4 a.m. at a Chevron gas station on National Avenue near 35th Street, according to Officer Sarah Foster of the San Diego Police Department.A man walked into the gas station and pointed a gun at an employee, demanding money, Foster said.The employee complied and opened the cash register. The suspect took money from the register, grabbed two packs of cigarettes and took off on foot, Foster said. Police were unable to find him.Robbery detectives were investigating the incident. 618

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Councilwoman Barbara Bry jumped into second place Monday in the San Diego mayoral primary election, leapfrogging over Councilman Scott Sherman.The two candidates with the most votes will head to the general election in November, so depending on the final vote count, San Diego voters could be faced with a choice between presumptive front-runner Assemblyman Todd Gloria, a Democrat, and Republican Sherman -- or another Democrat in Bry.The latter option would guarantee San Diego its first Democrat mayor since Bob Filner resigned in 2013 and just the second Democrat elected to the nonpartisan position -- several Democrats served as interim mayors in 2005 and 2013 -- since Maureen O'Connor stepped down in 1992.Bry currently leads Sherman by just nine votes out of 338,673 counted in the race so far -- or .0026% of the vote.With a projected 37,000 provisional ballots left to be counted, and with Sherman's election-night lead of more than 3,000 votes officially made up, the race could prove exceedingly close.If Bry were to gain votes at the same rate as Monday -- which is far from assured -- she would win by just under 500 votes.In the race for City Council District 1, Will Moore maintained his lead over Aaron Brennan for second place. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A San Diego man who provided alcohol to an underage drinker who subsequently caused a crash that killed her passenger was sentenced to 240 days in custody, the City Attorney's Office announced Wednesday. Fraidoon Ahmad gave alcohol to Yolanda Lozano and Mabel Bahena, both 19, on Feb. 17, 2017. Lozano later drove while drunk and collided with a truck on Interstate 15, killing Bahena. Lozano pleaded guilty to gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and was sentenced to one year in custody, with Bahena's family asking a judge for leniency as the two women had been best friends since grade school. Ahmad pleaded guilty in May to misdemeanor charges of furnishing alcohol to a person under 21 and furnishing alcohol to a minor causing great bodily injury and death. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A Utah man who robbed a Carlsbad Motel 6 at gunpoint, then was arrested attempting to re-enter the United States, was convicted of federal robbery and firearm-related charges, the U.S. Attorney's Office announced Wednesday.Lance Lamont Lavert of Salt Lake City, 37, was convicted Tuesday by a San Diego federal court jury for the July 9, 2018, morning robbery of the motel on Paseo Del Norte.Prosecutors said Lavert and his girlfriend asked for a room, but were denied due to a lack of ID.Lavert then pointed a gun at the motel clerk and her manager, demanding money. When the clerk and manager ran, Lavert leapt over the counter, kicked in the door of the bathroom where the clerk was hiding, dragged her back to the cash register by her hair and pistol-whipped her in the head, court documents state.Along with 5 in cash, Lavert and his girlfriend made off with the clerk's car keys and stole the clerk's car, prosecutors said.Lavert was arrested two days later trying to cross the border back into the United States. The revolver he used in the robbery was found in his waistband.In addition to committing the robbery, Lavert was convicted for possession of a gun while having several prior felony convictions, including for arson in Utah and assault with a deadly weapon out of Imperial County, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.Lavert's girlfriend pleaded guilty prior to the trial, according to prosecutors. 1440
