A New Jersey woman thought her diamond wedding ring was lost forever when she accidentally flushed it down the toilet nine years ago.But thanks to a public works employee with a keen eye she was reunited with it.Paula Stanton, 60, received the gold ring encrusted with several diamonds from her husband as a gift for their 20th wedding anniversary. "I was embarrassed to tell my husband because it was meaningful."Her husband bought her duplicate ring as a replacement, but Stanton said she always hoped that maybe one day the original would be found.Two years ago, she talked to Ted Gogol of the Somers Point Public Works Department and explained what had happened. Gogol told her he had never come across the ring but would keep her in mind.Last month, as he was working on a pipe about 400 feet away from Stanton's house, Gogol saw something glimmer and shine in the muck. He plucked the shiny metal object out of the pipe, cleaned it off, and sure enough it was the long-lost diamond ring."That ring didn't want to leave her family," Gogol told WPVI. "There are so many things that could have happened. It could have been washed away, it could have been crushed, but it was just meant to be."Stanton couldn't believe the news when she saw a note on her door from the public works department.When Gogol brought her the ring she said, "You are like a Christmas angel."Stanton now wears both rings and vows not to lose them. 1593

A pair of references to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange in an unrelated court filing reveals US government efforts to charge him.In a filing unsealed last week, prosecutors for the Eastern District of Virginia included two references to charges against Assange while arguing to keep an unrelated case sealed for a different person charged with coercion and enticement of a minor."Another procedure short of sealing will not adequately protect the needs of law enforcement at this time because, due to the sophistication of the defendant and the publicity surrounding the case, no other procedure is likely to keep confidential the fact that Assange has been charged," prosecutors wrote in the August 22 filing that was then unsealed November 8.Later, in the request to seal, the prosecutors wrote: "The complaint, supporting affidavit, and arrest warrant, as well as this motion and the proposed order, would need to remain sealed until Assange is arrested in connection with the charges in the criminal complaint and can therefore no longer evade or avoid arrest and extradition in this matter.""The court filing was made in error," said Joshua Stueve, spokesman for the Eastern District of Virginia. A massive scam related to COVID-19 that targeted millions of Office 365 users in 62 countries was stopped by Microsoft's digital crimes unit.The department is almost like a police department. There's even an evidence room. It's an office that is only known to the people whose job it is to investigate attacks on Microsoft customers. They're a small group, but they're mighty.Tom Burt, the Corporate Vice President for Customer Security and Trust, said the team is comprised of "lawyers, forensic investigators data analysts, business people."Burt is in charge of the cybersecurity team that goes after cybercriminals. Their job is to find, intercept and then help law enforcement stop the scam artists in their tracks."(We're) looking for things that we shouldn't be seeing in the data relevant to how Office 365 was being used by our costumers," Burt said. "When we see that we can dive deeper, look at the metadata and look at the information that's streaming through our Office 365 global network — to try to find indicators of people doing bad things."The team often uses social media to alert people to the hacks they're seeing.Cybercriminals often target people's fears and anxiety. So, these days, the coronavirus pandemic is a good hook.One of the recent lures was a "cure for coronavirus" or "COVID-19 safety tips" from the Red Cross. The hackers were hoping Officer 365 users would take the bait and click."They're able to get control of users' Office 365 accounts," Burt said. "They can then see what's going on in that account. They can act as if they're you — they can send email in your name and look to find things in your email account like passwords and other information."Burt says the hackers are good. They do research and figure out how companies are structured and who does what. They'll look at social sites and figure out exactly who to target.Some of the scams people were getting involved co-workers asking others to transfer money to an account."They're sophisticated criminals," Burt said. 'They do this work to make sure the requests look legitimate so they can be successful in stealing money."Burt says there's an easy way to prevent phishing attacks."The number one thing by far is to utilize two factor authentication on all of your accounts," he said. "If you're a business,s make sure you're doing that for your business email if you're an individual, make sure you're doing it for your individual email and financial accounts."Burt is referencing the separate codes a user gets when logging on to a website. The site will give a prompt so they can prove that they are.The cybersecurity team says two-fact authentication will eliminate 98-99 percent of attacks.The challenge has always been to find the cybercriminals. So, this time around, the digital unit went around them."We're saying, let's stop them in a different way," Burt said. "Let's take the internet tools that they're using to conduct their crime, and let's go legally take those tools away from them."Court documents from the civil case filed in Federal Court say that Microsoft has the authority to take away the tools the hackers need to conduct their scams."Basically, websites, locations on the internet from which they can conduct their fraudulent activities — whether it's launching their efforts or the place where they want you to ultimately go — we go with the court order to those registrars and transfer those domains to Microsoft control," Burt said.Doing that strips hackers' access and gives Microsoft the ability to block them."We took down the criminal infrastructure that was being used to defraud people in 62 countries," Burt said. A New York judge dismissed count 6 of Harvey Weinstein's criminal indictment Thursday, which was a criminal sexual act in the first degree.The count stems from charges brought forth against the disgraced movie producer in May by Manhattan District Attorney's Office.A source familiar with the investigation told CNN at the time that the criminal sex act charge was from a case involving aspiring actress Lucia Evans, who alleged Weinstein forced her to perform oral sex on him in his Tribeca office in 2004. She first spoke out about the alleged incident to Ronan Farrow in the New Yorker last fall.Carrie Goldberg, an attorney for Evans, spoke to reporters outside the court in lower Manhattan following the dismissal, and said the prosecution "jumped ship" and "ultimately she was caught between the middle of a feud between the NYPD and the DA's office."Goldberg added that despite District Attorney Cy Vance not opposing a motion to dismiss the charges against Weinstein, her client's claims remain and this "does speak to a system desperate in need of reform.""People always ask why don't sexual assault survivors come forward, this is why. A robbery suspect calls himself a modern-day "Robin Hood," but he’s facing charges after thefts from construction sites in Port St. Lucie.Police said Thomas Paul Sauer, 50, was caught on surveillance video stealing appliances from at least two homes under construction.Security video shows a red SUV pulling up to a home in, a passenger getting out of the car, opening the garage door, then the SUV backing into the garage.On Sunday a Port St. Lucie police officer came across the suspect's vehicle, a 2005 Hyundai SUV, parked in a driveway about two-and-a-half miles away from the robbery.On Monday, detectives went to the home where the suspect's vehicle was still parked. While at the home, detectives met with Sauer who lives at the address. Sauer later admitted to taking a 0 washer and dryer from the first house, and an ,800 refrigerator out of a second house.Sauer told police that "he was like Robin Hood." However, it is unclear if Sauer was intending to give the stolen merchandise to the less fortunate like the legendary English outlaw."This affects consumers, builders and city and we're going out make sure that when people buy a house and they're going to move, in all the stuff is in there,” said Port St. Lucie Master Frank Sgt.
