Both China and Japan are APEC members.All-round Sino-Japanese ties currently maintain a sound momentum of improvement and development, which are widely welcomed by both peoples and the international community, Hu said."Sino-Japanese ties are now at a crucial juncture," Hu said, "we should maintain such a sound trend, and push forward the healthy and steady development of bilateral ties."This year marks the 35th anniversary of the normalization of Sino-Japanese ties. Over the next few months, the two countries will host various activities of friendly exchange, Hu said, hoping that the two sides will cooperate and support each other to make these activities a success, in order to enhance the mutual understanding and friendship of both peoples."We welcome Prime Minister Abe to visit China again this year, and hope both sides will make good preparations to ensure the visit achieve positive results," Hu told Abe.Abe echoed Hu's remarks on bilateral ties, saying bilateral cooperation has made progress in various areas.Bilateral exchanges and cooperation in defense matters have made positive progress, which are of great significance, Abe added.Japan attaches great importance to maintaining high-level contacts with China and is looking forward to conducting more contacts with Chinese leaders this year, Abe said.Japan is ready to work with China to push forward bilateral ties, Abe added. The Chinese president arrived here from Canberra Wednesday to attend the annual APEC Economic Leaders Meeting. China will cooperate more with the European Union (EU) to develop safety and security criteria for products, a leading official from the top product quality supervision authority said Wednesday. To increase joint efforts to establish a product safety control system, the two sides have agreed to establish a joint information platform for industrial products, Wei Chuanzhong, vice-minister of General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ), said."We will assess what it will take to set up a database for the platform by the end of this year," Wei said."The information platform will help solve problems arising from bilateral trade, providing a more effective way to push forward win-win trade development," Wei said.Wei made the remarks after the sixth annual meeting of the Negotiating Mechanism on Sino-EU Industrial Product and WTO/TBT (World Trade Organization/technical bar-riers to trade), which took place in Beijing Wednesday.Under the negotiating mechanism, which was launched early in 2002, China and the EU have set up 10 working groups covering trade issues in several industrial sectors, such as textiles, medical devices, electrical and mechanical devices, chemicals and cosmetics. He said a four-month product-safety inspection campaign launched by the AQSIQ is currently underway nationwide.Prior to yesterday's meeting, the EU also signed the first agreement for cooperation on pharmaceuticals and related products with the Chinese State Food and Drug Administration, according to the delegation of the European Commission to China."We will not impose any discriminative supervision regulations on Chinese products exported to the EU market. Instead, we are willing to offer technological support to Chinese enterprises to ensure an effective control over product safety," Heinz Zourek, director general for Enterprise and Industry of the European Commission, said.

The national workers' union on Wednesday pledged to work closely with authorities to issue a detailed regulation on the Labor Contract Law as soon as possible, to assist its application starting January 1."We'll actively promote and participate in the legislation and relevant legal interpretations to make the law more applicable, especially by making suggestions on some hotly debated issues," Liu Jichen, head of the legal affairs department of the All China Federation of Trade Unions, said at a press briefing.Liu did not elaborate or disclose a timetable, but the Outlook Weekly, a magazine under the official Xinhua News Agency, reported on Monday that an implementation regulation of the Labor Contract Law was expected by the end of the year. It also reported that a judiciary interpretation, drafted by the Supreme People's Court, would also be adopted soon to regulate loophole jumping. The Labor Contract Law, passed in June after 18 months of heated debate and public consultation, is considered the most significant change in the country's labor rules in more than a decade. It targets bosses and officials who exploited workers by establishing standards for labor contracts, use of temporary workers and severance pay. However, business lobbies worry that stricter contract requirements could increase costs and give them less flexibility in hiring and firing. The country's leading telecom equipment-maker Huawei Technologies in October encouraged some 7,000 veteran employees to resign and rehired them immediately afterward. The Labor Contract Law stipulates that an employee who has worked for a company for more than 10 years is entitled to sign an open-ended labor contract. However, the legislative affairs commission of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, the country's top legislature, made it clear on Saturday that such sidestepping is useless, because although the contracts end, employment relations still exist. At yesterday's conference, Liu said Huawei's dodge is only one of the three tactics the union discovered violating or circumventing the current Labor Contract Law. Firms would also fire employees and rehire them soon afterward as dispatch workers. The other strategy uses mass layoffs. For example, United States retailing giant Wal-Mart fired about 100 employees at its sourcing center in China last October, claiming the layoff was part of its global restructuring."The cause of these problems is that a small number of enterprises is trying to evade responsibility to optimize profits," Liu said. "We've begun intervening to stop such activities."

WASHINGTON: A team of researchers found there is not much difference between the sexes when it comes to talking, when you actually count the words. The researchers placed microphones on 396 college students in the United States and Mexico for periods ranging from two to 10 days, sampled their conversations and calculated how many words they used in the course of a day. The score: Women, 16,215; Men, 15,669. The difference: 546 words: "Not statistically significant," say the researchers in Friday's edition of the journal Science. "What's a 500-word difference, compared with the 45,000-word difference between the most and the least talkative persons" in the study, Matthias R. Mehl, an assistant psychology professor at the University of Arizona, who led the research, said. He said the least talkative person in the study - a male - used just over 500 words a day, while another male topped that by more than 45,000. Co-author James W. Pennebaker, chairman of the psychology department at the University of Texas, said the researchers collected the recordings as part of a larger project to understand how people are affected when they talk about emotional experiences. They were surprised when a magazine article asserted that women use an average of 20,000 words per day compared with 7,000 for men. If there had been that big a difference, he thought, they should have noticed it. "Although many people believe the stereotypes of females as talkative and males as reticent, there is no large-scale study that systematically has recorded the natural conversations of large groups of people for extended periods of time," Pennebaker said. Indeed, Mehl said, one study they found, done in workplaces, showed men talking more. Still, the idea that women use nearly three times as many words a day as men has taken on the status of an "urban legend", he said. Agencies

Six Uygurs have been sentenced to death or life imprisonment for secessionist activities in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the Xinhua News Agency reported Sunday. They were convicted of engaging in "separatist activities", "training at a terrorist camp" and "illegally making explosives" by the intermediate people's court of Kashgar last Thursday. The six people were believed to be members of the East Turkestan Islamic Movement, which the UN listed as a terrorist organization. Two were sentenced to death, two received death sentences with two years' reprieve and the other two were jailed for life. The court heard that the six had engaged in a series of secessionist activities from August 2005 until this January, when they were arrested.Together, they planned, led and organized a terrorist camp and led two missions aimed at securing explosives. They made 67 grenades and two bombs that could be used for suicide attacks with the 16 kg of explosives they had acquired, Xinhua reported.
