SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- After losing her husband and her son to a rare form of cancer, a local mom is doing her part to bring awareness to the disease. She teamed up with her family’s medical care team to come up with a step challenge.“I’m a mother on a mission to find and fund a cure for this disease,” says Debra Melikian.She lost her son Merak in February. He was diagnosed with a rare form of Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor, also known as GIST.“He was so strong, he was so brave and determined to live life on his own terms,” says Melikian. “Merak never let cancer define him.”Melikian says the cancer is hereditary. She lost her husband to the cancer months prior.“I have lost my entire immediate family in a mere two-plus years. I do not want any other family to have to go through the despair and destruction that this cancer brings.”When not tending to patients, the care team at UCSD, who treated Merak and his father, would often participate in fun challenges, like Tough Mudder. Nurse Maura Caffrey says after Merak’s death, they wanted to do something to honor him and bring awareness to GIST.The team came up with a step challenge.“Whether you do Zumba, yoga, or hiking, you can do any type of activity,” says Caffrey. “It’s sort of a movement challenge. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A woman visiting San Diego to spend time with her daughter is dead after being struck by a car near San Diego State University Friday evening. San Diego Police Department says the woman was hit at the 4800 block of College Avenue just south of Montezuma Road in the College Area at approximately 7:45 p.m. The 48-year-old female victim was transported to an area hospital where she died. Police say the victim was not using a crosswalk when she was struck in the number two northbound lane of College Ave.The driver fled the scene according to SDPD but returned about an hour later.The driver is a 40-year-old female and detectives say they are still determining if this will continue to be classified as a hit-and-run.Police expect the intersection to be shut down for several hours. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Aldofo Otanez was diagnosed with schizophrenia when he was 17-years-old."When he's medicated correctly he's very funny, he's always very caring very caring person," said his brother Tomas. Aldofo has been in and out of treatment centers his whole life. Most recently, a hospital assigned him to a home in Spring Valley called Mi Casa Es Su Casa. "Right away we said, 'no, he's never been in a place like this,"' said Tomas. "People don't fit in there. They don't, they're crumbled up, there's about 3 or 4 people per room."Tomas was planning a trip to visit his brother on February 16th. When he called the facility, he says they told him Aldofo had been missing for two days. "It's disturbing," said Tomas. "I mean, it shouldn't happen, a simple phone call, 'your brother isn't here, it's been a day or two'. Give us a call..nothing."It's been more than two weeks now with no sign of Adolfo. "It's very sad, I'm taking it as calm as I can so I can think about what to do next." The family is passing out flyers and posting pictures to Instagram with hopes that someone knows where he is. "The family is pretty sad, I've got a lot of siblings and they're all very worried.""He has no money, no ID, no social security on him," said Tomas. "So he's just stranded out there somewhere."10News spoke to the manager of Mi Casa Es Su Casa who says he didn't call the family right away because he claims to have lost their contact info. He also says he didn't file a missing persons report because police would not let him. San Diego Police checked their records and said they never spoke to the facility that day. The family is holding a search party on March 3rd in the Starbucks parking lot at 8626 Jamacha Boulevard.
