A Howard County, Maryland fire fighter and first responder wasn’t even working when he risked his own life to save another.  Ryan Glenn said it was just instinct.  Glenn said he was driving along The Chesapeake Bay Bridge when he saw a man threatening to jump.  “I saw the gentleman standing on the railing and he was on the railing holding on to the guardrail,” said Glenn.At it’s center, The Chesapeake Bay Bridge is 180 feet, a dizzying height for anyone. Glenn was off duty, happened to be on the bridge and jumped in to help.“I said hey, there’s a lot of people who care about you.  Let’s not do this, come down and talk.  I’m here for you, I care about you,” Glenn told the distraught man.With the help of two other off duty officers, who just happened to be on the bridge as well, Glenn began the negotiating.“I managed to get closer and closer to him and probably about two feet away from him, I said, just take my hand and let’s get you down from here.”But that’s not what happened. “He looks down at the water and looked at me again and then he did the unthinkable.  He went from the railing of the bridge to a cross member I-beam type of material on the bridge and jumped on it.  At that point, he was just holding on by his grip and his feet were dangling over the water” remembered Glenn.As a trained professional, Glenn was comfortable risking his own life to save another.“At that point, all three of us, it was just like instinct, all three of us, reached over the railing and grabbed him and pulled him over,” Glenn said.“You’re conditioned to it, if you see something wrong, we run to the problem, we try to fix things.”The man was taken to safety and then to the hospital for treatment. 1758

A childhood baseball glove lost 40 years ago made its way from a family’s hometown in Ohio to a Goodwill store in Palm Beach County, Florida.“I just walked in and there sitting on the edge of a shelf on the bottom shelf was this mitt, sitting so that I could see the name, 'Christopher Lisi' on it," Julie Anne Lisi said.Julie Anne and Mike Lisi, from Ohio, are spending time in their home in Tequesta this month. They were visiting Goodwill in Jupiter on Indiantown Road for senior day on Wednesday when Julie Anne spotted the mitt with her son's name on it in his own handwriting. She also noticed her own handwriting just inside of it."My knees got wobbly and I got weak and scared," Julie Anne said.An emotional Julie Anne called over her husband to show him her discovery."She was in tears, shaking then she showed me the glove and I understood," Mike said.Julie Anne took a picture of the glove and texted it to her son Christopher."He texted back, 'Buy it,'” she said.Sue Rounds, a cashier at Goodwill, rung up the priceless childhood mitt for .49."A lady came to the register and I asked her and I said, 'How are you?' She said, 'I’m shaking,'" Rounds said. "I said. 'What’s wrong?' She said, 'The glove!'”The biggest question now is how did the mitt end up at a Jupiter Goodwill? After it turned up, Christopher told his parents he lost it after a championship baseball game in 1978 when he was 12 years old. He had hit two home runs during that game. He lost the glove afterward and hadn't seen it since.“He had won the championship and in the hullaballoo and the handing out of trophies he probably set it down on a bench and somebody walked away with it," Mike said.Julie Anne said she has donated to Goodwill before, but she has only donated used books. Even then, she's donated those up in Ohio because that's where their longtime house, and subsequent clutter from over the years, is located. A Goodwill representative said the company doesn't track specific items, but they do move them from store to store if they're not selling.Julie Anne hopes to figure out how exactly the glove made its way down the country.“To me, it’s a miracle," Julie Anne said. 2190

A man placed under suicide protocol has died in police custody.Early Sunday, Maryland State Police was contacted by the Carroll County Sheriffs Office, to investigate an in custody death.Officials say the detainee was being held at the Carroll County Detention Center on first degree assault charges. No details on the arrestee's identity have been released, pending next of kin notification.Maryland State Police Homicide detectives have taken the lead in the investigation.   510

A federal court in Texas sentenced ice cream manufacturer Blue Bell Creameries to pay .25 million in criminal penalties for shipments of contaminated products linked to a 2015 listeriosis outbreak, the Justice Department announced Thursday.Blue Bell pleaded guilty in May 2020 to two misdemeanor counts of distributing adulterated ice cream products.The sentence, imposed by U.S. District Judge Robert Pitman in Austin, Texas, was consistent with the terms of a plea agreement previously filed in the case.“The results of this investigation reflect the determination of the Defense Criminal Investigative Service to hold companies that sell food products to the military accountable and ensure they comply with food safety laws,” said Michael Mentavlos, Special Agent-in-Charge of the DCIS Southwest Field Office. “The health and safety of our service members and their dependents are of paramount importance.”The .25 million fine and forfeiture amount is the largest-ever criminal penalty following a conviction in a food safety case.“American consumers must be able to trust that the foods they purchase are safe to eat,” said Acting Assistant Attorney General Jeffrey Bossert Clark of the Justice Department’s Civil Division. “The sentence imposed today sends a clear message to food manufacturers that the Department of Justice will take appropriate actions when contaminated food products endanger consumers.”According to the plea agreement, Texas state officials notified Blue Bell in February 2015 that samples of two ice cream products from the company’s Brenham, Texas factory tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes, a dangerous pathogen that can lead to serious illness or death in vulnerable populations such as pregnant women, newborns, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems.Blue Bell directed its delivery route drivers to remove the remaining stock of the two products from store shelves, but the company did not recall the products or issue any formal communication to inform customers about the potential Listeria contamination.Two weeks after receiving notification of the first positive Listeria tests, Texas state officials informed Blue Bell that additional state-led testing confirmed Listeria in a third product.Blue Bell again chose not to issue any formal notification to customers regarding the positive tests. Blue Bell’s customers included military installations.In March 2015, tests conducted by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) linked the strain of Listeria in one of the Blue Bell ice cream products to a strain that sickened five patients at a Kansas hospital with listeriosis, the severe illness caused by ingestion of Listeria-contaminated food.At least three people in Kansas died as a result of the contamination, according to the CDC.The FDA, CDC, and Blue Bell all issued public recall notifications on March 13, 2015. Subsequent tests confirmed Listeria contamination in a product made at another Blue Bell facility in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, which led to a second recall announcement on March 23, 2015.According to the plea agreement with the company, FDA inspections in March and April 2015 revealed sanitation issues at the Brenham and Broken Arrow facilities, including problems with the hot water supply needed to properly clean equipment and deteriorating factory conditions that could lead to insanitary water dripping into product mix during the manufacturing process.Blue Bell temporarily closed all of its plants in late April 2015 to clean and update the facilities. A California synagogue has been vandalized with anti-Semitic graffiti less than a week after a gunman killed 11 Jewish worshipers in Pittsburgh.Someone spray-painted "F*** Jews" early Wednesday on the wall of Beth Jacob Congregation in Irvine, police said. The Irvine Police Department posted a surveillance-camera video of a man in a hoodie spraying the exterior of the synagogue.Police said officers will increase patrols around the city's Jewish organizations."IPD has reached out to its partners in the Jewish community to reaffirm the Department's commitment to protecting their members, houses of worship and educational institutions," the department posted on Facebook.
