SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Health officials issued two new public health orders Monday addressing cruise ships arriving in San Diego during the coronavirus pandemic.The orders are meant to give the county more legal framework in how the Port of San Diego interacts with ships and the cruise industry, Dr. Eric McDonald, the county's medical director of epidemiology, said.RELATED: San Diego gyms ordered to close in new coronavirus health orderThe new orders include:"No passenger or employee may disembark a cruise ship in San Diego harbor without the approval of the health officer or designee if any person on the cruise ship has tested positive for COVID-19. Any cruise ship that is permitted to dock in San Diego harbor shall notify the health officer or designee regarding any emergency medical treatment required for passenger/employee and follow all directives from the health officer or designee.No cruise ship in San Diego harbor may dock or disembark employees or passengers after March 31, 2020. However, upon approval of the health officer, a cruise ship may dock solely for the purposes of receiving fuel and provisions, so long as no employee or passenger disembarks. Cruise ships docked in San Diego harbor shall notify the health officer or designee regarding any emergency medical treatment for a passenger/employee and shall follow all directives of the health officer or designee.""I know there have been questions about ships that have come before and I can say that the individuals who have all departed these ships in the past to-date and tomorrow all have been screened, have no symptoms, and have no fever, and are leaving to go to their homes of record to complete 14-days of CDC recommended quarantine," McDonald said. The other passengers will travel home for their quarantines.The only ship that has had positive coronavirus cases is the Disney Wonder, which arrived in San Diego nearly two weeks ago. One passenger and one crew member who each tested positive are currently hospitalized, McDonald said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- For the first time in nearly 100 years, an integrated company of male and female recruits at MCRD San Diego are about to begin their journey into becoming Marines. These future Marines will be led by graduates from MCRD's first ever integrated Drill Instructor Course. Now the mission of the course is to screen, train, and further develp leadership and command presence of selected Marines, in order to successfully perform duties of a drill instructor."We are taking them from the leadership skills, that they had in the fleet, and further refining them here," says Major Lynn Stow, Director of the MCRD San Diego Drill Instructor Course. "The drill instructor's goal is to successfully transfer recruits into United States Marines."Fifty-seven Marines are scheduled to graduate from the grueling 57 day course, and for the very first time, the graduating class will include 3 females."Getting the opportunity to come here was almost like divine intervention, everything just kind of fell into place," says student Sargent Stephanie Fahl. "To come here and make it this far, I'm really proud of myself."These future drill instructors at MCRD are looking forward to changing the lives of young 17 and 18-year-old recruits. "The change I'd like to instill in the recruits is to obviously maintain that discipline that's a staple of recruit training,"says student Sargent Stephanie Jordi. "I'd also like to inspire them and teach them how to become leaders even from that lowest level." Student Sargent Ikea Kaufman feels being a drill instructor is about teaching recruits how to be men and women."There is more to life than social media and all that. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Hundreds gathered outside Fire Station 21 in Pacific Beach Tuesday evening to remember a San Diego Fire-Rescue Department firefighter killed in a motorcycle crash over the weekend.Ryan Ferrara, 39, was riding on the back of the motorcycle as a passenger when it crashed into a parked vehicle. It happened July 18 at the 13000 block of Piping Rock Lane in the Lakeside area.The driver of the motorcycle was hospitalized; he has not yet been identified. Authorities say neither the driver nor Ferrara were wearing helmets.RELATED: San Diego firefighter killed in Lakeside-area motorcycle crashThe crash is still under investigation, but the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office says alcohol or drugs may have been factors in the crash.Many who knew Ferrara were visibly distraught during Tuesday's remembrance ceremony. Rich Marcello, who worked with Ferrara, says it's a Fire Station 21 tradition to go down to the beach and watch the sunset after every shift when possible."Every evening, we come out and watch the sunset and gather round each other and kind of hang out with each other, which is why we're here with the family today," he said.Before he was a firefighter, Ferrara was a lifeguard. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - For three days, faith organizations from across the country will be in Point Loma for the San Diego National Church Safety & Security Conference hosted by Rock Church.The conference has been held for the last nine years and aims to help churches, synagogues and mosques become safer by providing tips and tools to better prepare for attacks, like mass shootings.Several topics will be discussed including how to work with law enforcement, incident reporting, emergency evacuations and more.There are also many vendors on hand, offering products and services which include surveillance systems, background checking and first aid supply kits.Organizers hope attendees will take away three main points. “Do something, don’t just do nothing. A lot of churches have anything in place, ” said Rock Church safety director Mike Diggs, who spent 20 years in law enforcement. “The other thing is, we want you to learn how to keep children safe at your establishment,” he continued. “And the third is to prepare for a critical incident, active shooter situation, natural disaster.”The event goes on until Friday.
