SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A woman was arrested Monday afternoon after police say she stole a vehicle with two children inside.Police say Rodney Cole left his 3-year-old son and 8-year-old daughter in his car with the engine and air conditioner running around noon on the 200 block of Euclid Avenue.After he went into a business, a witness reported seeing a woman, later identified as Leslie Saenz, get into the car and drive away with the children inside.Monday night Cole explained the terrifying ordeal to 10News.His 8-year-old daughter, Malaiha, told police she was able to call the police and tell dispatchers that she and her brother Jackson had been kidnapped. "They said, '911 whats your emergency?' and I said, 'me and my little brother got kidnapped,'" Malaiha said. "and (police) said, 'where are you and what can you see?' and I said, 'signs for the Mexico border.'""(The woman) tried to take the phone away from me but I moved away from her, and she said, 'give it to me, or I’m going to drive in circles and take this car and crash into the freeway wall.'"That's when she gave the phone to the woman, but the police acted quickly.  Roughly 30 minutes later after the car was stolen, Border Patrol detained the woman as she was trying to cross the border into Mexico.  Police have since taken Saenz into custody.Cole told 10News he bought the phone for the kids a few months ago, but it's not an activated line. He taught Malaiha how to call 911 on the phone, in case of emergencies. "I'm very proud of her," he said. 1616

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- A plan to permanently remove the traffic along Normal Street in Hillcrest and replace it with a promenade will be voted on Tuesday. If approved, the westside traffic lanes would become a pedestrian walkway with dedicated bike lanes. It would also make room for the weekly Hillcrest farmers market and other events. “They call it a promenade but where are people promenading to,” says Linda Hanna, owner of Salon Antoine. Hanna has owned the business near the corner of Normal Street and University Avenue for almost 20 years. “We are in favor of something like this, but we need to think it through.”Other business owners are worried because the project would eliminate a driveway to a nearby shopping center.“If you don’t close that driveway, you have a driveway going right to the park, and that’s a real problem,” says Benjamin Nicholls, Executive Director of the Hillcrest Business Association. To add space to the east side lanes, some parking spaces will be moved. The Hillcrest Business Association says there are plans to add dozens of parking spaces near Lincoln Avenue. The Uptown Planners will vote on the project Tuesday at 6 p.m. The Hillcrest Business Association will be holding an event before the vote to update members of the community on the project. 1296

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Two men wearing masks and gloves robbed a City Heights jewelry store Friday.One of the men jumped a display counter and confronted an employee of the Eclipse Jewelry Store at 4213 University Ave. just east of Interstate 15, police said.One man took jewelry from display trays and put it in a bag while the second man pointed a gun at the employee.The owner told 10News the men got away with about ,000 worth of mostly gold chains. He also said he thought perhaps the men had been in the store before since they seemed to know exactly what they wanted. Both men ran off and were last seen getting into a silver colored late model Toyota or Honda heading east.No one was injured in the robbery. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two women are launching a new nonprofit, Black San Diego, to bolster Black-owned businesses locally.It started at a kitchen table over chips and salsa four years ago. Sheri Jones, a real estate broker, and physical education teacher Tinicia Smith wanted to create a hub for Black-owned businesses in San Diego.They created a Facebook group called Black San Diego and now they're more than 34,000 members strong."For the last four years we've been able to collect data and what we realize is that business owners haven't been able to sustain because they don't have the tools," Jones said.She first noticed the issue when she was running her real estate business and went to a conference. She said she was the one Black person there and it was uncomfortable."I knew when I was having trouble, others must be too," Jones said.This week, Black San Diego became official, registered through the government and they're excited to plan workshops to offer those tools to the community. Jones described the workshop as, "an 8-week course where they can go through and get business basics, book keeping, business taxes, really how to formulate their corporation."Newly Appointed Board Member and CEO of Growth 1031 Lance Growth said these workshops are crucial for black-owned businesses like his."I stumbled into my position.. I made so many mistakes and I just had to sit down and learn from those mistakes," he said. "I'm going to send my operations lady, and ask her to take some extra notes on accounting, on marketing, on filing correctly, but it's a really beneficial tool."The workshop costs 0 per business and the nonprofit is launching a donation campaign to sponsor local Black-owned businesses."If the dollar circulates in the Black community then we can unite and produce generational wealth and that's what we're here to do," Smith said.They hope to bring members of their community out and help them elevate their business, "they don't want to step in the front, not get criticized, not get caught up in the chaos. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local Marine's dreams are close to becoming a reality in the form of a massive property in Dulzura. It is not just for Kalani Creutzberg. His efforts to help others prompted an Animal Planet star to join the cause. Nate Schoemer was also a Marine. He was fresh out of high school with his blood type on his boots when he joined the invasion of Iraq.  "The first group was out there for three days and when they came back you could tell that they've just been through hell," Schoemer said. "This is hard for me to talk about," he said with tears in his eyes. It is especially hard to him to discuss it with civilians who often cannot comprehend the horrors of war. He lost some friends on that deployment in 2003."I could hear it from where I was," he started. "I mean I could hear them screaming," It haunted his heart on home soil., but he said his dog's love lifted his spirits. "I need to continue on this mission and helping others the way she helped me," he added.When he got out of the service he became a master dog trainer. He went on to host an Animal Planet show called "Rescue Dog to Super Dog". In it, he saved shelter dogs and turned them into service dogs for people in need. In episode one, he trained Bas for Creutzberg, which is how the two met. Creutzberg survived chilling deployments, but the fight for his life followed him home. "Before I knew it I was homeless," Creutzberg explained. "It was embarrassing, it was shameful," Bas gave him a sense of purpose. "When I was going there to rescue him he was actually the one rescuing me," Creutzberg added. Now, he is on a mission to give homeless vets a home. He plans to buy a property that is nearly 300 acres in Dulzura. "We're going to run our day to day operations very much like when we were back in the service," he explained. "There will be structure, we will work together…… the very things that a lot of us miss."It does not end there.  They will also rescue homeless dogs  about to be euthanized."[We'll] allow both the veterans and the dogs to grow relationships and start anew," he said. Schoemer believed in the Cammies and Canines Sanctuary so much, he joined the efforts. He plans to turn some of the dogs on death row into service dogs for vets. "Just being around Marines and veterans is a great thing,"  Schoemer said with a big grin. Their goal is to get back to tackling battles together. If that is not enough, man's best friend might just save someone else from being their own worst enemy. Creutzberg said they have raise about 0,000 of the 0,000 they need to purchase the property, so they are looking for investors.
