SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Boulevard Fitness in University Heights is open for business, with a line of people wrapped around the building waiting to go inside to workout on Tuesday, even though they’re not supposed to be open.Last week, San Diego County Supervisors said the county would be cracking down on businesses that violate public health orders put into place due to the coronavirus pandemic.A gym owner in Ramona was recently charged with several misdemeanors for staying open for indoor workouts. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Cathedral Catholic High School students took part in a protest Tuesday against a ban on skirts as uniform options for girls. Officials at the Carmel Valley school changed the dress code Friday for the 2019-2020 school year. CCHS said it would ban the uniform skirts, citing multiple detentions based on enforcement. Female students will have the option to wear pants, capri pants, or Bermuda shorts, the school said. “By removing the option for girls to wear skirts at a Catholic school not only demeans me as a female, but makes me wonder if we are moving towards a gender neutral society. I believe this is sexist, patriarchal and sexualizes the female students unnecessarily,” said freshman student Rachel Donaldson. They are there to educate and guide- this is a simple task,” wrote Donaldson. A student created a petition on Change.org to keep skirts as part of the uniform option. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Authorities responded to a riot Friday night at Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in Otay Mesa that left five people injured, including at least one with serious injuries.Cal Fire San Diego said about 100 inmates were in the prison yard when a fight broke out around 8 p.m. California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said Saturday that number was closer to 80 inmates.CDCR said officers gave multiple orders to stop fighting, before using several rounds of less-than-lethal force to stop the incident.Four inmate-made weapons were recovered, CDCR said.Five inmates were injured and had to be transported outside the prison for treatment, for injuries including puncture wounds, cuts, and bruises to the head, neck, and torso areas, CDCR says. Cal Fire had previously reported that six inmates were transferred from the scene.One of those inmates suffering from puncture wounds was in critical condition. Three inmates were in fair condition and the fifth was treated and returned to prison, CDCR said.No prison staff members were injured.The facility canceled visitation for Facility A Saturday and Sunday in light of the riot. 1175

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Currently, there are five vaccines that kids in California must get to attend school, and a lot of parents are wondering if the eventual COVID-19 vaccine will be added to that list.A website run by the California Department of Public Health seems to suggest that a change to the state’s immunization requirements may be imminent. In a message titled “COVID-19 Update,” state officials say immunization requirements “remain in place for now. Any updates will be posted here.”But history and medical science suggest it will take time before states make a COVID vaccine mandatory for children, according to Dr. Rahul Gupta, the chief medical and health officer at March of Dimes.SEE ALSO: States have authority to fine or jail people who refuse coronavirus vaccine, attorney saysMarch of Dimes is the non-profit organization that funded the search for a polio vaccine in the 1950s.“We’re seeing a repeat of history in so many ways,” Dr. Gupta said.Fear of the deadly polio virus prompted quarantines, social distancing and a run on breathing machines. In those days, doctors used iron lungs.With funding from March of Dimes, Dr. Jonas Salk launched a massive clinical trial on 1.8 million kids using his experimental vaccine in 1954. Almost exactly a year later, in April 1955, he announced the vaccine was safe and effective.Within days, five million kids got the first dose of Salk’s vaccine. In the infamous Cutter Incident, one of the six labs licensed to produce the polio vaccine accidentally let live virus slip into the shots, leading to more than 250 cases of polio, including instances of paralysis and deaths.The incident prompted sweeping safety changes in the U.S.Dr. Gupta said the Cutter Incident shows vaccines need to be rolled out carefully.“We have to understand that that’s a process and we learn as we go along,” he said. “There could be some adverse events that happen from any drug, much less a vaccine that you take.
