SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Uber Eats will begin testing a new service that will deliver food using drones in San Diego, the company announced Wednesday. Uber and San Diego were granted the winning bid by the Federal Aviation Administration last year to test the new delivery service, according to the company. Here’s how Uber says the system will work: After a restaurant loads the meal into the drone and the drone takes off, a system will notify a nearby Uber Eats delivery partner to meet the drone at a drop-off location. The orders will then be picked up and hand-delivered to customers. The company says the initial phase of testing in San Diego was done with McDonald’s, but that it will be expanded later this year to include more restaurants, including Juniper and Ivy. “We’ve been working closely with the FAA to ensure that we’re meeting requirements and prioritizing safety,” said Luke Fischer, Head of Flight Operations at Uber Elevate. “From there, our goal is to expand Uber Eats drone delivery so we can provide more options to more people at the tap of a button. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - With over 10,000 employees worldwide, software company Teradata is making San Diego its global headquarters.They're growing the current Rancho Bernardo office by 65,000 sq/ft, equipping it with amenities designed to attract high-tech talent.The upgraded campus features a fitness center, yoga/pilates room, spin studio, fresh-ground coffee machines, new whiteboards, and play spaces featuring games like shuffle board and foosball.In the headquarters unveiling Monday, executives also revealed the company's new branding and logo.They plan to work with partners like UC San Diego to recruit top talent to the company.Teradata was previously headquartered in Dayton, OH, employees there were offered relocation packages.Teradata plans to hire 200 more employees in the coming months, bringing its San Diego workforce total to over 1,000. 863

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — While fall-like temperatures lingered around San Diego County for a few days, a heatwave is on the way.Above-average temperatures are expected throughout the week with a heat advisory in effect from 11 a.m. Tuesday through 5 p.m. Friday.With many people still working and learning from home, you may have noticed higher energy usage on your electricity bill.“We’re dealing with some unusual and extreme situations this year given the COVID-19 pandemic and also extreme temperatures,” said Jessica Packard, communications manager for San Diego Gas and Electric (SDGE). “Look at conserving energy when you can, I know that’s easier said than done.”She said the key to bringing down that SDG&E bill is to avoid energy usage between 4 and 9 p.m.This time spent working from home can also come in handy.“If you are home working, try to maybe run the dishwasher during your lunch hour when you normally wouldn’t because you’d be in the office,” she said.To help during this pandemic, SDG&E has suspended service disconnections for those who can’t afford to pay their utility bill. SDG&E is also offering flexible payment plans.Based on annual household income, people who qualify can also sign up for state and federal programs to get discounts on monthly energy bills.“Look at some of our customer programs and assistance options if you’re really struggling and want us to cater maybe something to help you get through this difficult time,” said Packard.The hot and dry conditions across the county also cause fire concerns to grow. Firefighting agencies are asking everyone to remain cautious and avoid doing anything that can spark a fire.Right now, Packard said there is no need for Public Safety Power Shutoffs, but SDG&E meteorologists track and monitor the weather conditions daily in case there is a change.“At SDG&E, we really don’t want to turn off your power,” she said. “We try to give at least 48 hours’ notice in advance. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Two San Diego-based Marines are under investigation after posting a video that appears to show them in "blackface."According to KPBS, Zach Highfield originally posted the video on Snapchat. Highfield's Instagram page shows him in his Marine uniform. The video shows Highfield and another man in uniform with their faces blackened. One of them is heard saying "blackface." The other man puts on his cap and salutes. At one point, one of them uses a racist slang used to describe African Americans. The video shared on social media, with many people on Twitter, saying the Marines should be kicked out of the military. Bishop Cornelius Bowser is the pastor of Charity Apostolic Church. He agrees. "It seems as though, whether it's military or someone in the community or working for a company, they should have learned by now that this is unacceptable," said Bishop Bowser. Highfield told a KPBS reporter, they were wearing charcoal masks used to clean pores. He said they didn't mean to offend anyone. 10News tried calling Highfield at the number posted on his Instagram page, but his voicemail was full and he did not respond to texts. Bishop Bowser believes the two knew exactly what they were doing. "We pay our tax dollars for them to protect and serve our country and this is not it, right there, that kind of display, that kind of character should not be allowed." A spokesman with The Third Marine Aircraft Wing, based at Miramar Air Station, wouldn't release any details, but said the matter is under investigation.
