In California’s Coachella Valley, people are concerned about catching the novel coronavirus.“They’re scared; they’re freaking out,” said Jorge Garcia, who contracted the virus. “I was scared at first because you hear a lot of stories that people don’t make it, they get really sick.” A lot of people in the desert community, located about two hours east of Los Angeles, are getting sick.Local county health officials report more than 36,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus in the area and more than 680 deaths.Now, health experts say there aren't enough doctors and nurses to handle the spike in cases.“At one point we had over 90 patients in the hospital with COVID,” said Alan Williamson, MD, Chief Medical Officer at Eisenhower Health in Rancho Mirage, Ca. “I think we had about three beds available at our peak.”Williamson says his staff is overworked and pushed to its limits. And that bringing in traveling nurses to help lighten the load is no longer an option.“Because of national nature of this pandemic, all of those resources were basically tapped out,” he said.Now, help is on the way from the United States military.“The Department of Defense is committed to this fight,” said U.S. Army Major General Mike Stone, who is helping lead a joint military team to help civilian hospitals fight COVID-19.“We’re tailoring the force,” he said. “We’re giving exactly what’s required where it’s needed on the frontlines to save people’s lives.”To help slow the spread of this virus and provide relief for staff, Stone says the Department of Defense has sent nearly 600 health care workers from different branches of the military to support almost two dozen hospitals in California and Texas.“There is a lot of need and if we can save a life, that’s why we’re there,” he said.The cost of this mission has not been totaled, but Stone says the price is well worth it, as the military shows its commitment to the country.“When the chips are down, America always pulls together,” he said. “We’re here for however long it takes.” 2032
In a rare move, the Senate on Wednesday night voted to change longstanding rules to allow newborns?-- for the first time -- onto the Senate floor during votes.The rule change, voted through by unanimous consent, was done to accommodate senators with newborn babies, allowing them now to be able to bring a child under 1 year old onto the Senate floor and breastfeed them during votes.Illinois Sen. Tammy Duckworth, who gave birth this month to her second child, becoming the first US Senator to do so while in office, spearheaded the push for the rule change and applauded her fellow lawmakers who she says helped to "bring the Senate into the 21st Century by recognizing that sometimes new parents also have responsibilities at work.""By ensuring that no Senator will be prevented from performing their constitutional responsibilities simply because they have a young child, the Senate is leading by example and sending the important message that working parents everywhere deserve family-friendly workplace policies," Duckworth said in a statement after the vote.Duckworth decided to take her maternity leave in Washington, DC, rather than in Illinois, to be able to be on hand and available to cast her vote in the Senate if needed. But she expressed concern about the complex and strict Senate rules, which might impact her ability to do so while caring for -- and breastfeeding -- her newborn.There are a whole host of Senate rules that would make voting difficult for a senator while caring for her baby -- being unable to hand the baby off to a staffer, being unable to bring a child onto the floor and being unable to vote via proxy.Duckworth has been working behind the scenes for months to change the rules -- the likes of which have not been changed for quite some time. The last time the Senate granted additional floor privileges was in 1977 when it voted to change Senate rules to allow service dogs.The change was not done without some concern from some senators.Congressional aides tell CNN that there were many real questions from senators, expressing concern about the impact of opening the floor up to newborns. Amy Klobuchar, a Minnesota Democrat, said that the questions from other senators varied, from asking whether diapers will be changed on the Senate floor to questions if there should be a dress code for the baby on the floor."It's been quite a journey," Klobuchar told CNN of her help as the top Democratic member of the Senate Rules Committee, working with Chairman Roy Blunt of Missouri to get this out of quickly and onto the Senate floor."The Senate is steeped in tradition and just like the rest of the country, sometimes things have to change," she said.After the rule change passed this evening Sen. He needs more space in his refrigerator."This is one we've had since we built the house 17 years ago," he said.Like many families during this pandemic, he wants to stock up on frozen beef and chicken."We thought we would just invest in a freezer we would put in the garage, so we started to look."But finding a freezer was tougher than finding Nemo."We have been searching all summer long, nine months, for a freezer," Conougher told us in a Zoom interview from his kitchen."And even when the big box stores have their specials, they don't have them in stock."Many brands, price ranges affectedIt doesn't matter if you are looking for a freezer, refrigerator, range, oven, or washing machine.It also doesn't matter if your budget is 0 or ,000, or what brand you want (though American brands like Whirlpool and Maytag appear to be in better shape than European or Korean brands).You are going to find spot shortages just about everywhere, according to Ken Reiman, co-owner of an appliance distributor.He supplies builders and remodelers, who he says now have to delay finishing some projects due to ongoing shortages."When I check our vendor websites," he said, "they are just not available."He says the shortages that started when factories shut down for two months early in 2020 have not let up."For instance," Reiman explained, "they will give an estimated time of December 5, and December 6 comes around and they have moved to January."Why the shortage hasn't endedReiman says there are 3 reasons for the current shortages.Originally, it was factory shutdowns in March, April and May, along with delays getting appliances shipped from China during that time.The second reason is shortages of foreign-made parts, such as wiring harnesses and compressors, which forces U.S. factories to shut down their assembly lines until product arrives.The third reason is high demand, as people spend their vacation dollars this year on their kitchens instead, Reiman said.His suggestion: Be flexible on brand and model."We have products coming in," he said. "Our warehouses are more stuffed now than ever.
