Because of the great risk millions of workers in grocery stores and essential businesses were forced into by going to work each day, many of these workers received hazard pay or bonuses for several weeks. Now, many of the big retailers are stopping the pay hikes as states reopen, leaving workers asking: Why did the hazard pay end when the hazard is far from over? “These workers didn’t sign up to die,” said Kim Cordova, the President of the UFCW Local 7 union in Denver.Lisa Harris has been a cashier at a Kroger in Virginia for 13 years. She said working through this pandemic has been stressful. “We see at least 300 people per day,” Harris said. With the increased risk to employees, many grocery stores and retail giants like Kroger, Amazon, and Target offered a per hour wage increase, calling it “Hero Pay.” For King Soopers butcher Kevin Smith, the extra two dollars an hour meant peace of mind. “My wife lost her job because of the COVID, and that pay was really helping out, it meant a lot to me,” said Smith. 1129

A Florida judge has denied a request for a temporary injunction to block the Palm Beach County mask mandate.Attorneys for a group of Palm Beach County residents filed a lawsuit claiming that the county's emergency order requiring masks in public places to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus was unconstitutional.Judge John Kastrenakes issued his ruling Monday morning."The right to be 'free from governmental intrusion' does not automatically or completely shield an individual's conduct from regulation," Kastrenakes wrote in his 13-page order. "More to the point, constitutional rights and the ideals of limited government do not absolve a cititzen from the real-world consequences of their individual choices, or otherwise allow them to wholly shirk their social obligation to their fellow Americans or to society as a whole. This is particularly true when one's individual choices can result in drastic, costly and sometimes deadly consequences to others."Kastrenakes went on to say that there is no "constitutional or protected right to infect others."Commissioners voted unanimously last month to approve the mask mandate, despite objections from an impassioned group of residents who spoke against such an ordinance.County Administrator Verdenia Baker last week extended the order for an additional 30 days. It now remains in effect until at least Aug. 23.Mayor Dave Kerner said Friday that the county is in the process of mailing about 3 million masks to residents."As this community tries desperately to navigate the tumultuous seas presented by COVID-19, it is reasonable and logical that our elected officials are throwing the citizens of Palm Beach County a lifeline in an attempt to ameliorate the spread of this deadly, unbridled and widespread disease," Kastrenakes concluded. "Based on the evidence, this court will not second guess the manner in which a co-equal branch of government sought to discharge its sacred duty to protect the general public."A statement from the Florida Civil Rights Coalition, which filed the lawsuit on behalf of the plaintiffs, said Kastrenakes "unsurprisingly" denied the motion, "paving the way for continued government tyranny under the guise of disease prevention in Palm Beach County."Attorneys for the plaintiffs argued during a hearing last week that the mask mandate infringes upon their clients' constitutional rights.In their statement, attorneys claim the ruling "disregards fundamental rights like freedom of speech and the right to medical self-determination protected by the Florida Constitution."The Florida Civil Rights Coalition plans to appeal the ruling. A Utah man got quite the scare while hiking in Slate Canyon near Provo, Utah, over the weekend.Kyle Burgess, 26, was minding his own business in the Utah County wilderness around 5 p.m. Saturday when he came across some mountain lion kittens.Seconds later, their mom came around the corner — protective and aggressive. He caught the whole thing on video:“I didn’t really know what kind of cubs they were or what animal they were,” said Burgess. "Once I did realize what they were, I was like, that’s mom right there. I’m screwed.”What made it worse for the Orem man was that the encounter was a lengthy one. The video shows the animal shadowing Burgess for at least six minutes as he walked down the trail.At certain times, the mountain lion lunged at Burgess. But officials said Burgess did all the right things by not turning around, making himself "bigger," and making a lot of noise.The mountain lion kept following Burgess down the trail before he bent down and threw a rock, sending the animal running away. New NYPD training videos released Wednesday clearly show officers what they can and cannot do when taking a suspect into custody,But sometimes that training does not translate in real life. There's already there’s a law on the books banning officers from putting people in chokeholds, but the city council wants to take things a step further, banning officers from applying pressure or restricting a suspect's diaphragm.“It’s tough right now to be a police officer," said NYPD Chief of Department Terence Monahan. "You have to worry that if a suspect shot at you and you put a knee on his back, that now you become the criminal.”Monahan said these new rules have his officers fighting crime with their hands tied behind their backs.Those in favor say that officers are merely being given a script telling them how to behave in a critical incident. However, there are still those that argue that the city council does not have expertise in police tactics.Even so, the NYPD argues every encounter is different and a blanket law is not the answer.
