SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- People living along the coast in north county say they can't remember the last time mosquitoes were so bad.Sharon Mauro lives near the San Elijo Lagoon in Solana Beach."Oh, we couldn't leave the house without them attacking us," said Mauro.She hired Tony Gallardo of Mosquito Joe to spray her property."The last few weeks have been very busy. Basically, from the coastline all the way to Poway, the mosquito problem is pretty significant right now," said Gallardo.Gallardo says he sprays roughly 15 homes a day."This is kind of a perfect storm in everybody is stuck at home now, they want to be outside. The kids are getting tired of being inside. You get outside the mosquitos are eating everybody up, they're breeding cause they have more food, strange way to put it," said Gallardo.San Diego County Vector Control crews sprayed the lagoon last week. They also discovered a new trouble spot."A new spot showed up, and we didn't find until it was a wee bit too late. We do have it treated now, so it's going to be a one-time event," said Chris Conlan, the county's supervising vector ecologist.Conlan said the recent high tides contributed to the increase in mosquitoes."Whenever we get a very high tide event, especially something like a King Tide, as the water recedes from those high tide events sometimes leaves standing pools, and this mosquito is very good at taking advantage of that," said Conlan.Conlan said the Black Salt Marsh Mosquito doesn't transmit disease, but it's an aggressive "day biter," and can travel up to five miles.Residents worried about mosquitos near their property should contact the county's vector control program. 1675

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Neighbors point to a devastating Northern California fire as their strongest case towards getting the latest housing development denied in East County.Dozens killed and home after home devastated by the Camp Fire in Paradise, Calif., last year."A fire here would cause massive casualties and probably burn into Chula Vista or San Diego," Peter Anderson, of the Sierra Club, said in front of the County Administration Building Wednesday.Neighbors and environmental advocates opposed to Otay Ranch Village 14 say the county needs to stop piling up hazards. Despite the protest, the county moved Wednesday to move forward with the project."This is a catastrophe in the making," Dan Silver, of the Endangered Habitats League, said. "There are tens of thousands of unbuilt units in good village locations, there is no need to put a project in such a dangerous location."Those opposed also believe evacuations would be an issue adding the infrastructure should go elsewhere.The locations for many of the new housing developments in San Diego have been called dangerous. Near Escondido, the Harmony Grove and Valiano subdivison faced similar fire fears related criticism but both were eventually passed by the county board."This project is the poster child for dangerous sprawl development," Anderson said.People who don't want to see more homes built where fires have burned feel it's about putting more folks in harms way. 1444

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- On July 3, visitors will once again be able to ignite their minds in the world of science and curiosity, as the exhibits at the Fleet Science center in Balboa Park will be open for exploration."We're very excited to welcome everyone back into our building," says Fleet Center Communications Manager Karla Nafarrate. "We just can't wait until the exhibit gets going, as well as the theater. We've missed everyone so much."The Fleet Science Center is a hands-on museum, and because of that, major safety precautions will be in place. That would include reduced capacity, visitors must wear face masks, and social distancing. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — President Trump's pardon of former Congressman Duncan Hunter came as no shock to the man who successfully prosecuted the case.“While I am appalled as a citizen, I am not surprised given the prior conduct of the president,” said Phil Halpern, who left the Justice Department after the case concluded.Halpern was one of the Assistant U.S. Attorneys who prosecuted Duncan Hunter and his wife Margaret in 2019.
