TONAWANDA, N.Y. — Less than a week after baby Carter Dominguez was brought into the world, baby and mom are enjoying time at their Tonawanda, New York, home. It’s the journey here, and it's what Elizabeth ate before she gave birth that’s made this new mom experience anything but easy. “I just want everyone to know that this can happen,” she said. “I don’t want it to happen to anyone else.” When Elizabeth Dominguez went into labor, she was asked for a urine sample. “I did a urine test and it came back that I tested positive for opiates,” she said. “I called my husband freaking out saying, ‘how is this possible?’ I don’t do drugs." Her husband, Mark Dominguez, asked what she had to eat that day. “And I told him a bagel and a sub," she said. "That’s all I had. He told me it must be from the bagel.” The new mom had eaten a bagel covered in poppy seeds. Poppy seeds are derived from the opium plant. “In some cases eating a large amount of poppy seeds, such as the kind found in a bagel, has been shown to produce low levels of morphine and codeine in the urine,” said Michelle Rainka, a clinical pharmacist at DENT Neurologic Institute. “Potentially those seeds have not been washed and can contain that.” Rainka says anyone about to take a drug test should know this. “Anywhere from one to three bagels with poppy seeds can produce positive tests on a urine toxicology,” Rainka said. Elizabeth Dominguez gave birth later that day, and her baby’s tests for opiates came back negative. Still, the hospital monitored Carter for withdrawal and because she failed the drug test, hospital staff followed protocol and called Child Protective Services. She was discharged but Carter had to stay, separating mom and baby less than 24 hours after birth. “I felt absolutely horrible,” she said. “I felt like a terrible mother leaving him. I just want everyone to know that this could happen. It’s such a terrible thing and I don’t want it to happen to anyone.” Reports show she did have a false positive because of the poppy seed bagel. 2048

There have been thousands of aftershocks after two strong earthquakes hit northeast of Los Angeles. Communities are shaken after the two earthquakes—measuring at 6.4 and 7.1 magnitudes--hit in less than two days. The July 5 earthquake was the strongest in Southern California in 20 years. Many people living in Trona, California say they don't want to stick around to see the next one. “I know this is God's work and all, but it’s traumatizing,” says Dorothea Mith. Smith says she no longer feels safe living in this section of Southern California, and she plans on moving. “All this is broken apart,” Smith says, as she looks at the damage to her home. “It fell. My glasses started falling and I just couldn't move.” Smith says all she was thinking about during the earthquakes was about staying alive. “I just don't feel safe her anymore,” she says. “The wall is breaking, and I once loved this house. Loved it.”Smith says her community is without water. “It’s nasty. We can’t use the restroom; we can’t shower,” she says. The feeling of vulnerability seems to be spreading across the desert. Construction workers say they’ve fixed multiple water main breaks in just the past few days. Meanwhile, at the town’s high school, volunteers and the Army are handing out free water and meals to residents. Resident Steve Rosenow says not only is his community dealing with no water and a fractured foundation, they have to deal with looters, too.“It’s pretty frustrating,” Rosenow says. “We got to protect what's ours, but you don't want to hurt anybody.” 1564

There will be two versions of the redacted special counsel report, with one being released to the public and one that will eventually go to a limited number of members of Congress with fewer redactions, the Justice Department said Wednesday.Some of the redactions in the Mueller report will be because of the gag order in the case involving Republican activist Roger Stone, they wrote. Prosecutors say they are making these redactions so not to potentially prejudice a jury, since Stone has pleaded not guilty to the charges he faces and is headed to trial.In a court filing related to the Stone case, prosecutors outlined a careful plan to prevent leaks of the less-redacted version the Justice Department plans to provide to Congress.First, prosecutors will "secure" the less-redacted version -- suggesting it won't be available immediately. "Following the secretary's instructions, we are conducting the president's address and ending the foreign assistance programs for the Northern Triangle for fiscal year 2017 and fiscal year 2018," said a spokesman for the State Department. "We will participate in the Congress as part of this process."Trump threatened to interrupt or substantially reduce aid to the Northern Triangle before saying in an October tweet that countries "could not do the job of arresting people since they left their country and came to the United States illegally." But experts have said that cutting aid will likely increase the number of migrants leaving countries and heading to the United States."Cutting aid could worsen the circumstances for families fleeing violence and conflict. The American aid associations in these places are working to address the root causes of violence in Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador. This is a time when these countries could use additional investments and partnerships from the United States to promote economic opportunities and security for their citizens, nothing less, "said the United States Global Leadership Coalition, composed of retired diplomats, military leaders and members of Congress. Trudy was the oldest living western lowland gorilla in a zoo, and she was one of the last "wild caught" gorillas. At the age of 63, she has died in Arkansas.The Little Rock Zoo announced the death of its resident of over 31 years Thursday night. Gorillas like her typically live to be about 40 in the wild and 50 in human care, according to the National Zoo, but Trudy outlived them by more than a decade.Brought to the Little Rock Zoo in 1988 from Buffalo with her breeding partner, Ollie, the two were the first gorillas exhibited in Arkansas, according to the zoo.Most gorillas in zoos now are born in captivity, but Trudy was born in the wild. She was one of the last to be caught and brought into zoo captivity.The western lowland gorilla is the most populous and widespread species of all gorillas, according to the World Wildlife Organization. Even so, their numbers are on the decline, with poaching and disease reducing their numbers by 60% over the last 20 to 25 years, according to the organization.They can be found in Cameroon, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Gabon. They typically live in groups led by a silverback gorilla, according to the National Zoo, but Trudy bucked tradition.Though she lived with all male groups, zookeepers said Trudy "ruled the roost."She was described as spunky, with a mind of her own.
