Millions of Americans have fallen into poverty waiting for Congress to pass another stimulus package.“It seems like every time we get really, really close, then nothing transpires,” said Elizabeth Pancotti, a policy advisor at Employ America. “There is a sense of urgency within the halls of Congress, but that same urgency was there in July when the 0 top off expired.Pancotti added that in addition to new help from Congress, millions of people may be unaware of programs already in place to help. In fact, those who have lost their job and can’t afford to pay rent should consider three programs many people don’t know about, especially if they have never needed this kind of help before.“The first one is SNAP, or more commonly known as food stamps. That could provide 0 to 0 per week,” explained Pancotti. “The second program is TANF, or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families.”It is important to note that SNAP benefits can only be used for food. Additionally, SNAP benefit amounts can vary from state to state and can vary by family size. On average, an individual receives a maximum benefit of around 0 per month, while a family of four can usually receive around 0 per month. However, a family of six can receive around 0 a month and, in some states, every additional family member could add around 0 in benefits a month.TANF is only for families, adults with children, and there is usually a work requirement. However, many states are relaxing the work requirement during the pandemic, and ultimately, most families are receiving 0 to 00 a month in financial assistance.“The third program is going to be on a state-by-state basis, so some UI, or unemployment insurance offices, have tried to extend benefits for longer, or tried to top off benefits,” added Pancotti. "For example, in the District of Columbia, they are planning to send checks to every PUA worker.”With all three programs, it could take up to 30 days to get enrolled, so it is recommended that those in need apply now and apply even with a new stimulus package.“Even if Congress comes to an agreement this week, it is very likely that for most, if not all UI recipients, there will be a lag in getting those top off payments,” explained Pancotti. "If there is a 0-0 top off, it will be weeks before that starts showing up on checks. It will be weeks before people who are kicked out of the system will be brought back in.” 2440

MIDWAY, Utah — A locksmith in Utah says he was tipped off by something very strange at a recent job, which led to him helping a woman escape from a kidnapping.The woman signaled she needed help in a discreet way, and the locksmith called police."I would have been second guessing myself if I didn't do anything," said Greg, who didn't want his last name out there for safety reasons.He owns a locksmith business and described how a lot of jobs that come in are simple "locksmithing 101."It was that kind of simple job he thought he was doing on Friday at a home in Midway.When Greg showed up to re-key a lock on the front door, he says things seemed very off between the woman who lived in the home and a man who was with her."There was a gentleman that was kind of hovering over her, wouldn't get really more than a foot away from her," he said. He described the behavior as "shadowing," and said it was very weird.Greg went outside to his van to make new keys. When he stepped back inside the house, he says the woman gave Greg a sign she needed help."She's sitting there talking to me about what types of payment I take and everything, and she's kind of turning, she's at a little bit of a different angle and she's holding up her hand kind of like this with her palm open, and she has '911' written on her hand," Greg remembered. "So obviously, that drew some attention from me. But I was wearing a mask, so I couldn't mouth anything to her or anything."Greg also noticed that the woman had to ask the man to get access to her phone, in order to pay Greg over Venmo."That kind of was another little red flag," he said. "She's showing me the '911' again, kind of making sure that I saw it. And I made eye contact with her, to basically let her know that 'yeah, I saw it.'"Greg said it caused him turmoil and he didn't know what to do. He left and immediately called a friend he knows in the FBI to consult about what he saw. His friend told him to call police immediately, so Greg called the Wasatch County dispatch to report what he saw at the home.The Wasatch County Sheriff's Office responded and arrested Grant Nielsen Eggertsen on charges of aggravated kidnapping, interruption of a communication device and assault.According to charging documents and the Wasatch County Sheriff's Office, Eggertsen previously dated the woman and became upset that she was dating someone new.He had a key to the house, documents state, and showed up on Oct. 1, took the woman's phone, assaulted her and made threats to harm himself and burn down the woman's home.Documents state that Eggertsen kept the woman's phone, wouldn't let her call for help and wouldn't let her leave her room or house.It was the next day that Greg showed up for his appointment the woman had previously scheduled to change the locks. She told police she made the appointment before Eggertsen arrived because she didn't want him in the home."The lady was pretty smart to be able to do what she did," Greg said. "And so, it's not like I was trying to guess what was really going on. She gave me some great clues that there was an issue there."For a call that went beyond changing the locks, Greg got the job done."When found out that he had been arrested, charged and stuff, I was kind of like, 'Okay, good. Good. That's good,'" he said. Many Americans lack basic knowledge about the Holocaust — a stat many say could hold grave consequences, according to a survey results released on Thursday. The survey found that nearly half of all Americans — 41 percent — couldn't identify Auschwitz, a concentration camp where an estimated 1.1 million Jews and minorities were killed at the hands of Nazis during World War II. Among millennials, that number rose to 66 percent.The survey also found that a significant portion of Americans don't understand the scale of the Holocaust. According ro results, 31 percent of adults — and 41 percent of millennials — believe that two million or less Jewish people were killed during the Holocaust. It's commonly estimated that as many as six million Jews died in the Holocaust.Most of the survey respondents (58 percent) agreed that "something like the Holocaust could happen again," and commonly agreed that students should be learning more. Ninety-three percent of the respondents said that students should learn about the Holocaust in school, and 80 percent said it is important to keep teaching about the Holocaust so it doesn't happen again.According to a survey commissioned by the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany and conducted by Shoen Consulting. The results were released Thursday on Holocaust Remembrance Day."There remain troubling gaps in Holocaust awareness while survivors are still with us; imagine when there are no longer survivors here to tell their stories," said Greg Schneider, Executive Vice President of the Claims Conference according to the conference's website. Schroeder is declaring a state of emergency for the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) as they wait for Attorney General Daniel Cameron's decision whether or not to indict the officers in the Breonna Taylor case.The department has canceled all off days and vacation requests until further notice."The public may also see barriers being staged around downtown, which is another part of our preparations," Sgt. Lamont Washington said in the statement. "It is important to note that the AG has no timetable for the announcement."Taylor, a 26-year-old emergency medical worker, was killed by Louisville police serving a "no-knock" narcotics search warrant at her apartment. They found no drugs in her home. The city announced a settlement with the Taylor family last week that included a million payment and changes to department policies.An officer was shot during the raid by Taylor's boyfriend, who has said he thought he was defending against a home invasion. The boyfriend was initially charged, but those charges were later dropped.The Louisville Metro Police Department fired one of the officers involved, Brett Hankison, in June, saying he violated procedures by showing "extreme indifference to the value of human life."
