SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The former Navy sailor accused of killing four people by driving his truck off the Coronado Bridge and onto a crowd attended a motions hearing Friday.Richard Sepolio faces four counts of gross vehicular manslaughter and DUI. His defense team argued to throw out the DUI charge, as well as crucial evidence, including initial conversations between Sepolio and his arresting officers. The judge concluded that both issues would be allowed in the upcoming trial.The nephew of two of the victims wants answers. I'm trying to move here,” Contreras said. "My family hasn't celebrated Thanksgiving in two years. Life is just not the same. It's never going to be the same."Contreras is the nephew of Annamarie and Cruz Contreras of Chandler, Arizona, two of four people killed on October 15, 2016. Like the two other victims, Francine Jimenez and Andre Banks of Hacienda Heights, the couple was attending a fundraising event at Chicano Park when Sepolio’s truck suddenly plunged into a crowd, killing them.Sepolio's high-profile attorney Paul Pfingst argued Friday that his client was not read his Miranda rights while being transported to the hospital for his injuries and therefore, the conversations between Sepolio and responding officers should be inadmissible during trial.RELATED: Facebook Live video captures aftermath of bridge crashCHP Officer Juan Carlos Jimenez read from his notes about the initial conversation."I asked if he felt the effects of the alcohol,” Jimenez said. “He said ‘Yep.’”Officer Jimenez also recalled the moments when he gave Sepolio a Breathalyzer test. He believed Sepolio was attempting to fake the test by only pretending to breathe small amounts of air into the device. The test results showed Sepolio's blood alcohol level was 0.08 to 0.09%. Officer Jimenez remembered that Sepolio’s speech was indeed slurred and that he was complaining of back pain. But he admitted that instead of writing he had “slurred” speech, he noted that his speech was “slow.”Jacob Contreras said he was not buying the defense’s argument. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The big concern for many health care workers during the coronavirus pandemic is their protective gear. “It's a scary time with not knowing exactly what's coming at us,” said Jay O’Brien, a local nurse and a representative for the Sharp nurses’ union.“A lot of nurses are very concerned that we don't have the proper equipment. The biggest concern is the lack of N95 masks,” O’Brien said. The masks block at least 95 percent of airborne particles, but there is now a shortage due to the pandemic.Nurses at UC San Diego said they had been wearing N95 masks when interacting with a suspected COVID-19 patient, but the Centers for Disease Control has loosened their guidelines. Now, they are used only during more complicated procedures, such as intubations.UCSD nurse Tiffani Zalinski wrote over the weekend on Facebook that the N95 respirators were "confiscated by the administration and were being distributed on a case-by-case basis." She was upset over the change, saying she works with patients "fresh out of surgery" and the N95 respirator were “the only thing that is going to protect" her. Zalinski adds she "will not willingly be exposed to this disease and inadvertently spread it to others if I have choices and means to protect myself and you."A UCSD spokesperson told Team 10 the new guidelines still represent the "appropriate standards of care."O'Brien said he understands the CDC change. “If we burn through all the N95s now, if things get really bad as this crisis continues, then we're going to run out and have nothing at all,” O’Brien said.“I have no reason to think it's going to get better very soon, hopefully the precautions that we're taking are going to slow things down so that we can safely take care of people,” he added. 1775
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The nation's first kitten nursery, established in San Diego, is celebrating its tenth season running.San Diego Humane Society's kitten nursery has cared for more than 10,000 underage, orphaned, and otherwise kittens in need around-the-clock for the last decade, according to the Society.Currently, the nursery has more than 100 orphaned kittens."We are in kitten season," Jackie Noble, with the Humane Society, said. "We usually get two big peaks ... usually goes with the weather. As the weather gets warmer, more kittens are born and that's when we see the majority of our kittens come through the doors."And as Mother's Day nears, prospective owners are searching for lovable kittens to call their own."Yes everyone wants a kitten. We're getting a lot of people asking if they can adopt these babies." SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Metropolitan Transit System has launched an initiative to keep their buses and trolleys clean and their riders and employees safe.MTS officials said their ridership has dropped 75 percent since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. Now, with officials are seeing a recent uptick in riders, the agency is implementing new health and safety measures.Nikki Jefferson has relied on the trolley to get to work for the last three years. When the cases of COVID-19 started popping up around San Diego County, she was nervous about getting back on board.“I still use hand sanitizer after my last stop, anytime I touch the button,” Jefferson said.To help control the spread of COVID-19, the MTS is now cleaning their 800 buses and 135 trolley cars twice a day. MTS is even using the deep-cleaning fogging technique to disinfect high-touch areas.Additionally, hand-washing stations are installed at their 54 transit stops and plexiglass barriers protect bus drivers from passengers.When on a bus or trolley, passengers are urged to practice social distancing whenever possible.Officials said all riders on buses or trolleys, and riders at stops or stations, will be required to wear face masks or coverings.MTS CEO Sharon Cooney said, “We’re going to educate all of our customers so that they know you can’t come on board without as mask for some kind of face covering.”It’s a move Jefferson agrees with as she spends most of her time riding the trolley.“It makes me feel safer and less of a chance that I’m going to catch COVID-19, since I have to go to work, but I don’t want to bring it to work with me or have it around me,” said Jefferson.MTS officials said they will educate the public about the face coverings. Some staff will also have face coverings on hand. But they add if someone refuses to wear one, they’ll look into issuing a citation.So far, 33 MTS employees have tested positive for the coronavirus; 22 have recovered and have returned to work. 1984
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The coronavirus pandemic has brought the historic Balboa Park Carousel to a halt. Still, it hasn't halted plans to upgrade the 100-year old attraction."We did make lemonade out of lemons here," says John Bolthouse, the Executive Director of the Friends of Balboa Park.The group started a capital campaign fundraiser three years ago, hoping to raise million to overhaul the carousel. When the coronavirus pandemic hit, they saw an opportunity in the closure."We did the best to take advantage of it," Bolthouse says. "People stepped up, and they saw that there was a need and an opportunity to get these things done."A fundraising push brought in 0,000 in 30 days, bringing the total amount raised to .4 million. With the extra cash on hand, the Friends of Balboa Park accelerated the schedule for remaking the ride.They've repainted several of the animals, restoring them to the original design. The group also rewired the entire carousel lighting system. That included changing over every bulb to safer energy-efficient LED bulbs.It also allowed them to bring back some light fixtures that had been removed for safety reasons."100 years ago carousels were burning down due to electrical fires," says Manager Bill Brown. "It's going to be a huge improvement. I think people are going to notice when we reopen."Brown hired a contractor to help with big projects. He also has a team of four people who help work on the carousel every Tuesday.One of the animals that Brown just finished painting is a Golden Retriever, which has a special meaning to one of the donors."We named the dog Goldie George," says Julie Cowan Novak. "Goldie in honor of my three-year-old granddaughter and George in honor of my hundred-year-old uncle."Cowan Novak's family donated ,000 to adopt the animal. She says seeing the work continue has been a silver lining to the Pandemic."I think the carousel is really a balance for what we've all gone through," says Cowan Novak. "It's just sort of a bright light."The Pandemic has also brought some challenges to the ride.The Friends of Balboa Park had to furlough most of their staff from the loss of ride revenue. They've also put bigger plans to revamp the carousel plaza on hold.Bolthouse also says he doesn't know when they'll be able to reopen. Like other theme parks and ride operators, the carousel is still waiting on the state and county to release guidelines for reopening.But, when they get the green light, they plan to have as much of the restoration work as possible finished."We did the best to take advantage of it," Bolthouse says.
