BEIJING, Sept. 27 (Xinhuanet) -- People having a dog is way healthier than those don't, both physically and mentally, media reports said Tuesday.People owning dogs are more likely to take exercises than those having none, according to a recent poll of Mars Petcare, a pet food company.Two thirds of the walks dog owners take each week are attributed to their dogs, according to the poll, in which over 1,000 adults were surveyed.The survey also showed that 44 percent of dog owners over 65 years old make exercises because of their dogs.Dogs are a great motivator for doing exercises, said Dr. Sandra McCune, an animal behaviorist and also co-author of the book, "The Health Benefits of Dog Walking for People and Pets".

UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- As the UN on Monday pursued the world's top killer -- non-communicable diseases (NCDs) -- a leading doctor from the World Health Organization (WHO) called for preventative measures on such chronic diseases to be placed higher on the international agenda."It's not a choice of dealing with it or not, it's an absolute fundamental imperative for development," said Dr. Douglas Bettcher, WHO's director for the Tobacco Free Initiative, told Xinhua in a recent telephone interview.With NCDs already claiming 36 million lives a year -- nearly 100,000 people a day -- the UN Geneva-based health agency, WHO warns that deaths from chronic diseases will continue to climb even faster, amounting to 52 million deaths by 2030.As world leaders on Monday kicked off a two-day high-level meeting to enact a roadmap to attack diseases like cancer, diabetes, heart and lung diseases, it is hoped that the summit on NCDs, which is being called a "once in a generation opportunity," moves to become a "worldwide priority," Bettcher said.Marking the second time in its history that the United Nations General Assembly has ever put a global disease on the table, health experts and world leaders from 193 nations met to avert what the UN has declared a "public health emergency in slow motion. ""It's a make it or break it time for moving forward this very important agenda at this time of global financial crisis," said Bettcher.Calling NCDs the top global killer "by a long shot," Bettcher attributed such rises in deaths partly to the aging of the world's population, rapid urbanization and increased exposure to risk factors, particularly in low-and middle-income countries."This is a landmark meeting," said UN Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon at the opening of the unprecedented meeting. "Three out of every five people on earth die from the diseases that we gather here to address."The last time the UN looked at a health issue under the global microscope on such a high-level was almost a decade ago.

SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- Facebook on Thursday introduced a new feature called Open Graph, enabling users to access and share a wide range of media and lifestyle content on the social network site.According to Facebook's chief executive officer (CEO) Mark Zuckerberg, Open Graph lets users share what they are doing in Facebook-connected apps as they are doing it.These social apps focus on media apps including books, news, music, TV, movies and games, as well as lifestyle apps such as exercise, food, fashion and travel."The last five years of social networking have been about getting people signed up, and getting people connected with their lives. The next five years are going to be defined by the apps and depth of engagement," the young CEO said in a keynote speech at Facebook's f8 developer conference.Take music for example, Facebook integrates with European music streaming service Spotify. If one's Spotify account is connected to Facebook, a message will show up in the Ticker stating the song one is listening to and in the Timeline, a new design of one's profile page. The friends of the user can listen to the same song at the same time by hovering mouse over the song in Timeline or Ticker.Spotify founder and CEO Daniel Ek and movie streaming service Netflix CEO Reed Hastings also took stage as guest speakers to introduce their partnership with Facebook.Zuckerberg also introduced social news reading applications from major news organizations such as The Washington Post and Yahoo News, which allow users to access the content directly on Facebook.Earlier at the f8 conference, Timeline was unveiled as a new feature. SAN FRANCISCO, June 21 (Xinhua) -- Database giant Oracle on Tuesday announced that it has entered into an agreement to acquire FatWire Software, a provider of web experience management solutions.FatWire's solutions provide organizations with ability to deliver relevant customer content, build community engagement and drive site stickiness and loyalty.It currently has more than 500 customers in industries, including finance, healthcare, manufacturing, media, retail, public sector and more. Its key customers include Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Ford and Pfizer.Oracle said in a statement that the acquisition is expected to help Oracle clients improve online engagement across web, mobile and social channels, through website optimizations.The transaction is expected to close mid-year 2011 and the financial details were not disclosed. In its recent acquisitions, Oracle acquired e-commerce software company Art Technology Group for 1 billion U.S. dollars.

PARIS, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- European heavy-lift launcher Ariane 5 lifted off two communication satellites Wednesday from the Kourou launch centre in French Guiana, live broadcast of the launching process showed.The rocket, carrying the two communication satellites Arabsat 5C and SES-2, was launched at GMT 2138.This was the fifth heavy-lift mission of Ariane 5 in 2011. Arianespace had planned six Ariane 5 missions through 2011.The satellite Arabsat-5C was developed for the Arab Satellite Communications Organization (Arabsat) to provide satellite capacity in both C-band and Ka-band frequencies for a wide range of communications services.Jointly produced by Europe's EADS Astrium and Thales Alenia Space, it will be positioned at 20 degree East orbital location to cover the Middle East and Africa.Manufactured by Orbital Sciences Corporation of the United States, SES-2 will join the fleet of European satellite telecommunications operator SES, and is to be positioned at 87 degree West for coverage over North America and the Caribbean.Both Arabsat-5C and SES-2 have life-spans as long as 15 years.This Ariane 5 dual-passenger mission was postponed from Tuesday due to local strikes of French Guiana workers.Founded in 1980 as the world's first launch service and solutions company, Arianespace planned to achieve six Ariane 5 missions through 2011. Through 2010, heavy-lift workhorse Ariane 5 finished six missions, sending a dozen spacecraft into expected orbits.The next mission from Arianespace centre in Kourou was scheduled for Oct. 20 by medium-lift vehicle Soyuz. It will be Soyuz' first mission from French Guiana with a pair of satellites for Europe's Galileo satellite navigation system.
