SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A local high school teacher is using her classroom to foster conversations about social justice. In light of recent events, the community has stepped in to make sure the talks continue.Racism, diversity, and inclusion are just some of the words that sit on Jennifer Koller's vocabulary wall inside of her Steele Canyon High School classroom. Three years ago, she decided a class with those topics were needed for her students."The course was designed after years of watching the kids disconnect from the curriculum that didn't feel relevant to them," says Koller. With materials found at Teaching Tolerance, an aid for educators, it allowed her to shape the Literature and Social Justice course. It starts with identity, it moves to diversity, has justice, and ends with action," says Koller. "The last unit is when students really get to pick their own social justice issue and educate their classmates on something that's near and dear to their hearts."Recent Steele Canyon graduate, Tia Saunders, took Ms. Koller's course. She says it allowed students to have tough conversations, like race, with each other."It gave us all a chance to really just see everybody's side and truly pick whatever you want to do and understand why everybody thinks the way that they do," says Saunders.Koller says after seeing the recent events around San Diego and the country, following the death of George Floyd, she reached out to the community for help getting new anti-racism books for the class. The books were fully funded in less than two days."I feel my step into this next is to foster more intense and courageous conversations about race," says Koller. "I just wanted to start the new school year with ultimately the most relevant and interesting materials for the kids in my class."Students taking the Literature and Social Justice course will receive high school credit and credit towards admission to CSU and University of California schools. 1964

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A jury Tuesday found a man guilty of beating and raping two women on consecutive days in 2016. Jeremiah Ira Williams, 26, was found guilty on multiple charges Tuesday, including forcible rape and false imprisonment. Williams now faces 100 years to life in prison. His sentencing will be on May 30. A prosecutor Monday urged the jury to convict Williams, who is accused of choking and raping two women in different parts of San Diego on consecutive days in 2016.A defense attorney argued that police infused suspicions from the second case into the initial attack and mishandled evidence.Williams is charged with 13 counts including forcible rape, false imprisonment, sodomy and making a criminal threat.Earlier in the trial, Williams was removed from the courtroom for being disruptive and was not present Tuesday as attorneys presented their final arguments.Deputy District Attorney Trisha Amador told jurors that Williams followed Jane Doe #1 from a parking structure to her University City apartment on August 13.With her keys in the door, she was knocked down, robbed at gunpoint and choked to a point where she thought she was going to die, the prosecutor said. After being taken inside the apartment, Williams beat and raped her, Amador argued. The next day, Williams beat and raped a woman working as a prostitute after meeting her in a motel in Grantville, Amador said.Jane Doe #2 was reportedly so terrified that she broke a window and jumped through it to get away.Deputy Public Defender Thomas Bahr told the jury that a detective had a feeling the two sexual assaults may be connected and jumped to conclusions in an attempt to solve the first attack.Bahr also told the jury that Jane Doe #2 lied throughout the investigation and said her story contained inconsistencies.Bahr said Jane Doe #1 was a “true victim,” yet she couldn’t assist police in making a composite sketch of her attacker. 1943

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A record number of voters have already cast their ballots in San Diego County. Registrar Michael Vu said of the 1.92 million voters in the county, 1,081,727 already voted as of Sunday. The Registrar of Voters pushed for early voting in 2020 to avoid crowds on election days and Vu said that hope has been met.“I’ve never seen numbers like this in advance of Election Day before,” said Vu.He said that they’re expecting between 80% and 85% turnout this year. With two more days to cast ballots, they’re not sure what method the remaining voters will use to vote. He added that in the 2016 presidential election, close to 500,000 people voted in person on Election Day, and it’s possible that many could still vote in person Tuesday, meaning the traditional Election Day lines could still be seen.“Hundreds of thousands of individuals we’re still expecting to vote and the question is will they vote with their mail ballot or will they vote in person,” said Vu.He said the fate of the next couple of days are in the hands of the voters and how they decide to vote.Vu added that if and when people vote, they’re encouraged to go to their designated super poll location. There are 235 super polls across the county. Residents can locate their polling place online here. Voters can also check the back of their sample ballots and voter information pamphlets for assigned polling places.Monday, super poll locations are open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Then Tuesday, polls are open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. for Election Day. People have to be in line by 8 p.m. to be able to vote in person Tuesday, or mail has to be postmarked by Tuesday to count. 1650
