SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – An annual toy giveaway for San Diego military families looked different this year because of the coronavirus pandemic, but the reason for the event remains the same.For this year’s Operation Holiday Joy, the San Diego Armed Services YMCA chose hundreds of local military families who needed a little extra help this holiday season.On Wednesday, at the Murphy Canyon Chapel on Santo Road, the YMCA handed out boxes of gift-wrapped toys, and even bicycles, to more than 1,000 kids.Families were given books, a mini Christmas tree, and a gift card.Tim Ney, executive director of the San Diego Armed Services YMCA, said that now more than ever it’s important to support military families, as they too must deal with the additional challenges brought on by the pandemic.“Spouse employment is 30 percent, it’s really high. The online education and we’re doing the Achievement Academy where we’re taking the kids during the day. And doing the online learning, then we do STEM activities with them afterwards,” said Ney.It’s a little bit of extra help these military families are extremely thankful for.Emily, who is a military wife, told ABC 10News, “We’re so grateful and we’re thankful and blessed that everyone is so generous to give military families support, especially during this pandemic. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Sorrento Valley startup company has a plan to bring Coronavirus testing to your door.Mobile Xpress Clinics is offering on-site testing for businesses and their employees."I don't want my employees going to an emergency room," says founder Rolf Muller. "They have to go to an area that's safe, which can be controlled and there are not a lot of unhealthy people. And that is the key."Muller and his wife, Judy Muller-Cohn, created the mobile testing lab while looking for a way to get their own employees tested. They run a cancer diagnostic company and wanted to make sure their workers had easy access to tests.The clinic is a van, fully equipped with testing supplies, PPE, and everything needed to transport the tests back to a lab for analysis.Muller says they can set up within 15 minutes in a parking lot, and it only takes about 3 minutes per person to complete the test.Results come back within 24 hours."We can bring it to schools. We can bring it to church congregations. We can bring it to supermarkets. We can bring it to every single company where people work together," he says."If we control communities, the people who interact with each other all day long, then we can control the virus outbreak."Muller says companies should test their employees every two weeks. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — After five days of crews battling flames, the USS Bonhomme Richard ship fire is extinguished. The day after the flames subsided, Navy Admiral Mike Gilday came to San Diego to see the damage for himself and meet the sailors and crews who had battled the fire.“The main takeaway for me this morning was really the people, and we outta be proud of them, and the parents of these sailors outta be proud of them,” said Gilday.Related: Navy officials say all known fires aboard USS Bonhomme Richard are outHe said he met with about 150 people Friday morning to hear their stories of what it was like to fight the fire from the inside. Crews battled temperatures that hit 1000 degrees, even getting as hot as 1200 degrees at one point. He spoke specifically about meeting one petty officer who told him her training on how to fight a fire from the beginning is what prepared her for the battle this past week.“That training set the foundation for the way she operated and behaved and acted over the past several days. She was very proud of what she did and the teamwork that was involved,” he said.He added that two of the factors that made it difficult to put out the fire were the high winds and the explosions.“This fire probably couldn’t have been at a worse point on this ship in terms of its source that allowed it to spread up elevator shafts as an example, up exhaust stacks,” he said, adding that “there were times when he had to back those firefighters off the ship. At one point the explosion was so great that it blew the debris across the pier and onto the ship that was across the way.”The Admiral also talked about what’s next for the ship. He said the next steps are doing a safety investigation, a criminal investigation (which he added is typical), a command investigation to look at the procedures in place and what crews did right or wrong, and finally an assessment of the structural, mechanical and electrical damage, which will be done with the help of the people who built and know the ship.The Navy has not decided if the USS Bonhomme Richard will be recovered.“I am 100% confident that our defense industry can put this ship back to sea, but the question is should we make that investment in a 22-year-old ship,” said the Admiral.A spokesperson for the Navy confirmed that the flames have all been extinguished, but crews continue to watch for hot spots popping up. 2411

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Team 10 investigation discovered a North County deputy was found deceptive to a question on a polygraph exam before he was employed with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.A transcript from a separate case involving the deputy, which is currently working its way through the federal court system, revealed this new information.According to the transcript from that case, Deputy Kyle Klein denied ever being associated with a white supremacist organization during a polygraph exam. The polygraph exam report indicated he was being deceptive to that question, the court transcript said.Klein is being sued for allegedly using excessive force against a North County man.The lawsuit filed by Thomas deLeon III alleges that in December 2016 he was thrown to the ground and repeatedly punched and kicked in the area of his head, face, neck and spine."Looked like he got beat up, like a whole bunch of guys punched him in the face," said deLeon's sister Marlene deLeon.Marlene said physical injuries aside, her brother is suffering emotionally. He was not up for an interview for this story, but his sister said wanted to tell his story. She said since his 2016 encounter with deputies he struggles to leave the house."What did he do to deserve that?” she still questions. "Why did he get beat up? Why did that happen?”According to court documents, deLeon was on his bike when deputies stopped him.“Thomas slowly retrieved his identification from his wallet and handed it to deputies. At all times, Thomas was standing over his bicycle with it between his legs. He was not moving in any direction. Then, suddenly and without warning, Thomas was violently slammed to the ground, his head hitting the asphalt/concrete,” his suit states.A bystander at a nearby fast-food restaurant captured the incident on camera, but the video doesn’t begin until deLeon is already on the ground."He produced his identification, a brief conversation took place and the next thing was he was thrown to the ground,” said deLeon family attorney Brian Cline.Cline said deputies claim at some point Thomas deLeon resisted arrest and that’s why things got aggressive.DeLeon's lawsuit filed against the county, the sheriff and arresting deputies and others claims once on the ground Thomas deLeon was handcuffed, offered no resistance, and then violently beaten."If you've ever seen a professional fight at the point where they stop the fight because it’s gotten too violent, this is where it started and then they continued,” Cline said.The Sheriff's Department wouldn’t discuss the case with Team 10 saying the department can’t comment. Officials also declined a request for an on-camera interview.The county did, however, file a court document asking for the case to be dismissed. 2793
