QINGDAO, Aug.19 (Xinhua) - China's largest marine patrol departed Thursday from Qingdao to Vladivostok, a coastal city in east Russia, participating in a multilateral joint drill.The joint drill is to be held from Aug.22 to 27, with the theme of "enforcing emergency responses to illegal actions threatening joint marine security".The North Pacific Coast Guard Agencies Forum (NPCGF) promoted the multilateral joint drill in 2009.Current members of NPCGF, Canada, China, Japan, South Korea, Russia and the United States, participate in the drill."The joint drill mainly focuses on arms trafficking and illegal migration, including searching, boarding and examining suspicious ships," said Wu Shaojun, captain of Marine Patrol 11.Chinese Marine Patrol 11, Marine Surveillance 83 and helicopters and ships from other countries will participate in the joint drill, said Wu.Chinese Marine Surveillance 83 left for Russia on Aug.13 from Guangzhou, capital city of south China's Guangdong Province.NPCGF, initiated by the Japan Coast Guard in 2000, is an organization devoted to fostering multilateral cooperation on illegal drug trafficking, maritime security, fisheries enforcement, illegal migration and heightened maritime awareness.Member states take turns hosting the annual forum. HAIKOU, July 16 (Xinhua) -- Typhoon Conson landed at Yalong Bay of Sanya City, in south China's island province of Hainan, late Friday, causing casualties.Conson made landfall at 7:50 p.m., packing winds of up to 126 km per hour at the center, according to the disaster prevention office of Sanya, a tourist resort.It brought heavy rains and strong winds to Sanya, uprooting trees, pulling down billboards and light poles and partly cutting power supply.A security guard was buried in debris after a giant billboard toppled at about 7:26 p.m.. The man was found dead at about 11 p.m. after rescuers pulled away the billboard with the help of machines.A motorcycle rider was hit by a falling billboard and died at the site at about 8 p.m..The typhoon is expected to hover in the island for about 9 hours before it enters Beibu Bay on Saturday morning.The city had recalled to port all fishing boats by Friday noon and almost 40,000 people across the island had been relocated by 4:30 p.m..The typhoon, the first to hit China this year, has triggered high waves and cut some village roads.

GUANLING, Guizhou, June 30 (Xinhua) -- Rescuers have recovered eight bodies from the ruins of a southwest China village, two days after a devastating rain-triggered landslide destroyed 37 houses and buried 99 villagers under mud, authorities said Wednesday.As of 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, 91 residents of Dazhai Village, Guanling County, Guizhou Province, remained missing, said officials at the rescue headquarters.From 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday the bodies of three buried villagers were recovered, bringing the confirmed death toll to eight, said the officials.A total of 26 heavy backhoes had removed 100,000 cubic meters of clay. Some 2,000 people took part in the rescue work, said Pu Jianjiang, head of the provincial work safety bureau.The landslide brought down about 1.5 to 2 million cubic meters of mud, which was unstable and likely to trigger additional landslides, said Yin Yueping, a researcher with the Ministry of Land and Resources.The landslide struck 37 homes in Dazhai Village at 2:30 p.m. Monday.At least 1,000 villagers who lived in the area have since been evacuated.
