For almost 30 years, John Chhan and his wife, Stella, ran the doughnut shop in Seal Beach, California, a constant, reassuring part of countless customers' lives. But now the hard-working couple is facing a medical crisis, and their patrons are returning the sweetness.Since Stella suffered a brain aneurysm last month, John has longed to spend as much time as he can with her."She's in a nursing home," Chhan said. " My sister-in-law is here helping me."With a business to run and bills to pay, the doughnuts still have to roll. Chhan thought he would have to spend most of his time working at the doughnut shop -- away from his wife. 642
For the last two decades, support for marijuana has steadily grown. A record 66 percent of respondents in this year's Gallup poll say they support legalizing cannabis, up from 64 percent last year."I think a lot of consumers are coming out of the shadows, and they just feel more comfortable talking about cannabis, learning about cannabis,” says Trey Fisher.Fisher, with Medicine Man dispensary in Denver, Colorado, says particularly of note in 2018, is the emerging client base of women and the elderly. "The elderly, they're just looking for relief,” explains Fisher. “They're just looking for a product that works, and they don't care about the social stigma anymore."Individual dispensaries are certainly seeing growth, but industry insiders say the pot business as a whole is still being held back."It’s still completely illegal under federal law, and that's sort of putting a damper on the whole industry,” says Raza Lawrence, a cannabis law attorney.Lawrence specializes in helping entrepreneurs obtain cannabis licenses. He says if the U.S. would follow Canada in decriminalizing pot on a national level, the business would explode. “Once that changes, you're going to see a lot more corporations starting to jump into the fray, and its gonna look a lot more like other types of industries," Lawrence says. Both Lawrence and Fisher say that could happen soon, and they believe the move in Canada could put even more pressure on U.S. lawmakers."I think Canada is gonna really expedite that process a little bit," says Fisher. 1556
FRANKFORT, Ky. -- Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin is taking a stand on school shootings after 17 people died in a Florida school this week. It's a societal scourge that's top of mind for Bevin since not even a month has passed since a shooting killed two at Marshall High School in the small western Kentucky town of Benton.RELATED: Trump cites mental health in shooting, no mention of gunsIn a Facebook video posted Thursday night, Bevin called on producers of movies, music, television shows and video games to be part of an effort to “figure out how to try to repair this fabric of America that’s getting shredded beyond recognition.”"Our culture is crumbling from within, and the cost of it is high," Bevin said. "All of you, we've got to step up. We're the adults -- let's act like it. Let's step forward. Let's start a conversation."He also made the more standard overtures to fellow governors, the president and Congress to strike up a dialogue that can prevent future school shootings.Watch the video in the player below. The Associated Press reports Bevin also?told talk radio hosts on Thursday that guns are not the reason for the increase in school shootings. He blamed a culture that delegitimizes life through violent video games, TV shows and music lyrics.Bevin called video games where people kill others “garbage” and said “it’s the same as pornography.” He said “freedom of speech” has been abused by allowing things that are “filthy and disgusting and have no redeemable value.” 1505
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Prosecutors charging New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft with buying sex from massage parlor prostitutes are trying to save their case. They will argue before a Florida appellate court on Tuesday that police legally made secret video recordings of Kraft having paid sex at a massage parlor in January 2019. A lower court judge ruled that prosecutors could not use the recordings. He said the warrant allowing police to install secret cameras inside the Orchids of Asia spa violated constitutional standards. Kraft is charged with misdemeanor solicitation of prostitution. He has pleaded not guilty but issued a public apology. 667

Bush Colin Powell will officially endorse Joe Biden on Tuesday.Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, one of the party's most vocal members and a leader in the Democratic party's progressive wing, will deliver a 60-second speech on Tuesday evening. Progressive members of the party have been critical of the DNC's decision to limit Ocasio-Cortez's speaking time, while allowing some Republicans, like former Ohio Gov. John Kasich, the opportunity to speak longer.Ocasio-Cortez responded to the criticism by posting, "I only have a minute," a poem by Dr. Benjamin E. Mays. 1092
