Through email, the supposed owner said his name was Matthew Sherman, a sergeant stationed at Naval Station Rota in Spain. He said he was looking for a long-term renter and sent Maci a link with photos and an Airbnb site that looked legitimate."Along with the presence of the military, presence of the Airbnb website, I felt safe in the process,” Maci said.She exchanged emails and text messages to get more information about the apartment. Maci said the profile photo used by the man pretending to be Sgt. Sherman was a real soldier who passed away in an accident in 2018. “It really just sad heavy on my heart because this person's family doesn't realize his photo's being used for criminal activity,” Maci said.When Team 10 contacted “Matthew Sherman,” the response via email was similar to what Maci received. When questioned if the listing was legitimate, he stopped responding.It was an expensive lesson for Maci, but one she wants to share so others do not fall for it. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Airbnb is warning would-be party-goers this Halloween that weekend parties at San Diego listings are banned and guests could face legal action if they violate the policy.The rental booking platform banned parties at all of its listings in August and capped occupancy at 16 people as a precaution due to the pandemic. Airbnb has also banned one-night reservations over the Halloween weekend across the country."The great majority of guests are respectful of our hosts’ homes and neighbors, and we understand that this initiative will disrupt many one-night reservations that might not have led to parties. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- An incredible San Diego holiday tradition is making its way back to the bay.The San Diego Parade Bay of Lights has announced this year’s dates and times to take in the spectacular holiday tradition.This year, the parade will take place December 9 and December 16. The event begins at 5 p.m. and will make its way through the Bayfront.Before making the turn to Coronado, the parade will proceed to the pier at Cesar Chavez Park.The parade is put on annually by the Port of San Diego and brings more than 100,000 residents and visitors to the bay each year. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — About 70 members of the FEMA Urban Search and Rescue team in San Diego helped in the recovery effort after 9/11. Wednesday, they remembered the tragedy and reflected on how firefighting has changed in years since.On Sept. 11, 2001, terrorists hijacked two planes and flew into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City. Nearly 3,000 lives were taken. The work that followed days later brought in crews from around the country."On the pile is even more daunting than being off of it and figuring out where you've been and where you've looked and where's the potential to find someone who might still be alive," Battalion Chief Matt Nilsen said.Nilsen was sent to New York to set up communications, using his mechanical engineering degree. He returned to the West Coast with an unforgettable experience."Everybody wanted to do something to help and I was fortunate to have a job that was doing that," Nilsen said. Back home, he said firefighting has changed."It used to be a big thing that the dirtier your gear is, the saltier you are. Now it's the cleaner your gear are, is the smarter way to be," he said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A U.S. Navy sailor from the USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier was injured on his ship Friday.The sailor was struck by a towed aircraft on the flight deck around 6:30 p.m.A Navy news release reported the sailor was flown to Scripps Hospital in La Jolla for treatment. The sailor's injuries are not life-threatening.The USS Carl Vinson is conducting a training exercise off the coast of Southern California. The investigation into the incident is underway, the Navy said. 500
