New numbers uncovered by a CNN investigation show an alarming number of gun mishaps happening at the hands of federal air marshals, and it’s prompting some to call for a new review of how the program operates and whether air marshals are needed at all. Last year, an incident captured national attention, when a passenger found an air marshal's loaded service weapon in the plane's bathroom. According to CNN’s investigation, it wasn’t an isolated incident. According to the report, the Transportation Security Administration’s Office of Inspection documented more than 200 cases of air marshals allegedly misusing or misbehaving with their weapons between 2005 and 2017. Nineteen of those cases involve marshals accidentally firing their weapons. More than 70 involve lost or misplaced weapons, including some left in airplane bathrooms or in airports. And at least 13 of the incidents involved alcohol.  "I’d always get that there’s going to be a few incidents just because that's life; that's how it works,” says Jeff Price, an aviation security expert at Metropolitan State University of Denver. “But this many incidents, particularly how many are related to alcohol, that’s a serious concern, and there’s underlying problems there that need to be addressed.” Price wrote a book on aviation security and believes the program works as a deterrent. However, he says an overhaul of the air marshal program may be needed. "So, I think it’s definitely time for a stem-to-stern review of the entire air marshal program,” Price says. “I’m not advocating we get rid of it, but I am saying we should improve it, so it’s what we really envisioned." A former special agent in charge of an air marshal field office believes, when put in context with the thousands of marshals the agency has, the numbers are still relatively small. "You'd hope to have a 0 percent error rate, particularly when employees are carrying weapons,” the former official says. "But you employ human beings, and humans are going to have failures." The TSA responded to the CNN report with their own statement, saying reports of misconduct are taken seriously and investigated, adding that they take disciplinary action in the wake of any misconduct.  2280

Normally, they would be thrown out after one use, but a shortage in Personal Protective Equipment prevents that."You can’t just throw them in the washer machine -- that would destroy their fibers," Reynolds said. "For those (N95 and surgical), the best recommendation is to let the natural course of the virus dying off to run its course, so the recommendation is to take those masks and put them in a paper bag and wait seven days before you use them again."More commonly though, she said people in the community are wearing homemade, cloth masks, which can hold the virus for two days.She said one advantage in Arizona to clean those is the summer heat, which means leaving it in a car for at least 20 minutes."When it is 110 outside, in no time our cars will get really hot, so the coronavirus can survive in our cars for 20 minutes in up to 130 degrees and five minutes at 150 degrees, so that can be a very effective tool for decontaminating our masks," Reynolds said.She recommends removing the masks from the elastic around the ears using your pinkies. She said this is because those are the fingers you're least likely to use touching your face.After that, make sure to put it in a central location and sanitize or wash your hands."If you think about why we are wearing the mask in the first place, it is to prevent our exposure," Reynolds said. That means about 200 spots are going unused."I will watch people come into North Park and circle the parking garage looking for a parking spot, not knowing they're circling a place with 400 available ones," says Angela Landsberg, the Executive Director of North Park Main Street.Landsberg says the garage is often empty because there aren't enough signs letting people know it's there. She also says the only entrance, on 29th Street, makes it hard for people to access. She'd like to see the owners do more to promote it as an option for parking in the area."I think that people are not used to getting out and walking," she says. "The expectation is that we are going to pull up and have parking right next to the businesses that exist and that's not realistic looking forward."The garage charges an hour, with a daily maximum. It also charges flat rates during special events.
