Researchers say a whale found in the Arctic could be susceptible to COVID-19 since it's "particularly susceptible to infection."Researchers headed up by Martin Nweeia from Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio, will observe wildlife, mainly the narwhal whale is known for its vast nine-foot tusk."Scientists have a difficult enough time keeping up with the human spread of this virus, so we are eager to monitor an animal that is particularly susceptible to infection," Nweeia said in a press release.Nweeia has studied the narwhal for over 20 years, so he and his team know that animals can get the deadly virus."If this coronavirus were to gain a foothold in wildlife, there could be potential cascading impacts for ecosystems worldwide and the communities that rely on them," Nweeia added.Additionally, Nweeia and his team have already been observing the Ugandan lowland gorilla see its susceptibility because if it ever came into contact with one organism with COVID-19, it could wipe out the entire species, Nweeia said. 1072

President Donald Trump was only a half-hour into his nine-hour flight to the G20 summit here in the Argentine capital when he decided to pull the plug on the most hotly anticipated moment of his trip: a lengthy face-to-face with Russian President Vladimir Putin. But while Trump's abrupt decision quashed concerns that the President would repeat his cozy performance alongside Putin during their last meeting in Helsinki, Finland, new allegations by the President's former longtime attorney Michael Cohen revived questions about Trump's financial ties to Russia as he arrived for the international summit.Trump's planned meetings with a half-dozen other world leaders -- combined with the possibility of diplomatic snafus -- offer little promise of clearing the smoke of suspicion that is once again following him abroad.Eight minutes before he was set to meet with the summit's host on Friday morning, Trump began tweeting about the Cohen saga, saying his business dealings while a candidate were "very legal & very cool."Trump arrived in Buenos Aires for the summit late Thursday night, marking the first time he has set foot in Latin America in his nearly two years in office and kicking off what promises to be a whirlwind 48-hour visit. Friday will amount to the President's busiest day of diplomacy, but his most important meeting of the summit -- his dinner with Chinese President Xi Jinping -- doesn't come until a day later.Trump's aides hoped a signing ceremony for the recently struck United States-Mexico-Canada trade agreement would act as a centerpiece of the trip, and they scheduled an event for Friday morning. Persistent disputes with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau -- including over US steel and aluminum tariffs -- led to questions about who precisely from the Canadian side would be doing the signing. But on Thursday evening, an official with the Canadian Prime Minister said Trudeau would be at Friday's ceremony.Trump has hailed the agreement as evidence of his negotiating prowess and said the pact would benefit American workers. He's been unnerved in recent days by a shaky stock market and factory closures by General Motors, according to people familiar with the matter, and is hoping to be able to tout the new trade agreement in Argentina.  2295

President Donald Trump's former campaign chairman Paul Manafort has been found guilty on eight counts of financial crimes, a major victory for special counsel Robert Mueller. But jurors were unable to reach a verdict on 10 charges, and Judge T.S. Ellis declared a mistrial on those counts.Manafort was found guilty of five tax fraud charges, one charge of hiding foreign bank accounts and two counts of bank fraud. He was charged with 18 counts of tax evasion, bank fraud and hiding foreign bank accounts in the first case Mueller brought to trial as part of the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 US election. The trial carries major implications for the future of Mueller's investigation. Trump has repeatedly called the probe a "witch hunt" that hasn't found evidence of Russian collusion with his campaign, and his allies in and out of the White House say the special counsel should wrap things up.Prosecutors say Manafort collected million in foreign bank accounts from 2010 to 2014 and spent more than million on luxury purchases in the same period, including high-end clothing, real estate, landscaping and other big-ticket items. They also allege that Manafort lied to banks in order to take out more than million in loans after his Ukrainian political work dried up in 2015, and they accused him of hiding the foreign bank accounts from federal authorities. Manafort received loans from the Federal Savings Bank after one of its executives sought a position in the Trump campaign and administration, according to prosecutors."Mr. Manafort lied to keep more money when he had it, and he lied to get more money when he didn't," prosecutor Greg Andres told jurors during closing arguments. "This is a case about lies."Manafort, 69, has been in jail since June after his bail was revoked following new charges of witness tampering against him.He still faces a second set of criminal charges in a Washington, DC, federal court, of failure to register his foreign lobbying and of money laundering conspiracy related to the same Ukrainian political work that was central to the Virginia case. 2127

President Donald Trump visited California on Monday to receive an update on the dozens of wildfires that are currently raging across the Western United States.During a visit to McClellan Park, California on Monday, Trump received a briefing from local officials on the status of the fires that have killed 33 people in three states dating back to mid-August.The president then spoke at a ceremony recognizing the California National Guard, which has hundreds of members helping to battle the fires. At the event, he also awarded members with honors.Watch the event below:Trump has remained largely silent on the fires in the past few weeks. However, in recent days, he's taken to thanking firefighters in the region for their work in battling the flames.Trump addressed the fires during a Saturday campaign rally in Reno, Nevada — a city under a dense smoke advisory due to the nearby blazes."My administration is closely coordinating with state and local leaders, and we want to thank the more than 200,000 people that are working on it and 28,000 firefighters and first responders who courageously and bravely are fighting out there," Trump said.He added that California, Oregon and Washington had "never had anything like this," and stressed the need for better "forest management." 1293
