SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - A former North County Boy Scout said he is one of hundreds of sexual abuse victims in a new lawsuit against the Boy Scouts of America.Matt, who only wanted to use his first name, joined the Boy Scouts when he was around 13 years old. He really loved the outdoor activities.“We had a lot of great trips… a lot of good camp outs,” Matt said. Roughly a year after he joined, things changed.“We had an assistant Scoutmaster that started to join us on trips,” Matt said. “He just started spending more time with kids and a lot of these bad things started to happen.”The new lawsuit alleging sexual abuse was filed on behalf of one former scout in Pennsylvania. The total number of alleged victims in this latest wave of accusations is more than 850, according to attorney Andrew Van Arsdale. Matt is one of them.“Our oldest [alleged victim] is in his late 80s. Our youngest is 14-years-old,” Van Arsdale said. Van Arsdale is one of the lawyers involved in the group “Abused in Scouting.” The group came together after hearing the Boy Scouts were potentially filing for bankruptcy. They began a campaign telling victims that they no longer have to be in hiding. “It’s time to come forward. It’s the right time now and the response was overwhelming,” Van Arsdale said. He said he is “100 percent” expecting more people to come forward. For Matt, time has not healed all wounds of what he said the assistant Scoutmaster did to him.“He had come at me on multiple times. I think the first time, I was able to get him away from me,” Matt said. He was able to get away the first time, but not every time. He specifically remembers a camping trip in Camp Pendleton.“I woke up and he had gotten his hands on my genitals and massaging me… I woke up and pushed him off,” Matt said. “I think I just really kind of put it at the back of my head and just tried to forget about it.” But he didn’t forget and he said other kids in his troop were also abused by this man. In a statement, the Boy Scouts of America said that they “believe victims” and that the organization has “taken significant steps over many years to ensure that we respond aggressively and effectively to reports of sexual abuse.” The full statement can be read here. For some, it’s too little too late. “They knew it was a problem for a long time,” Van Arsdale said.“Anytime you got kids with adults having access to kids, you better make sure those adults are reliable, good people. And I don’t know that the scouts are doing that now. I would hope they are, but I know back in the day they weren’t,” Matt said. Matt said he quit because of that assistant Scoutmaster. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Thousands of refugees, immigrants and asylum seekers are finding a place to stay through the Safe Harbors Network, an organization which got its start at the Christ United Methodist Church in Normal Heights. Pastor Bill Jenkins began giving shelter to Haitian refugees back in 2009. And for quite a while the church was the only immigrant welcoming shelter in southern California. Eventually, the Safe Harbors Network was created. It's a growing collection of churches, organizations, and individuals that house refugees, immigrants and asylum seekers. Pastor Jenkins says he's seen an explosion of interest from people wanting to help in recent months after Trump's zero-tolerance immigration policy went into effect. Safe Harbors works in cooperation with ICE to give shelter to people awaiting their day in court.   886

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Deadly wildfires in California have burned more than 4 million acres (6,250 square miles) this year, a new record for the most acres burned in a single year. The previous record was two years ago when wildfires destroyed 1.67 million acres (2,609 square miles). California fire officials said the state hit the fearsome milestone Sunday with about two months still left in the fire season. (KGTV) -- Family members have identified three of the four teens involved in a deadly accident in Mt Hope.Three teens died at the scene, a fourth is in ICU at the hospital.Dwayne Heard is Dashaun Heard’s father, one of the teens that did not survive the crash. Dashaun was just 17-years-old. Heard says his family is still in disbelief about what happened, saying his son was a good kid that was outgoing and enjoyed being with his friends.Rose Monta?o is the mom of two of the teens in the car, 17-year-old Daniel and 15-year-old Julian Monta?o. Daniel did not survive the crash. Julian is in ICU and doctors had to amputate one of his legs.Monta?o says her son Daniel had a loving heart, was positive and enthusiastic about life.Both Heard and Monta?o say they still have many questions about what happened that night.The crash happened around 11 p.m. Tuesday night. Police say an officer ran the car’s plates and noticed it was reported stolen. SDPD says the driver ran a red light, refusing to pull over. According to police, the officer lost sight of the car, but the helicopter followed. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A federal judge in San Francisco is mulling the competency to stand trial of a Mexican man who shot and killed 32-year-old Kate Steinle. The 2015 shooting figured prominently in President Donald Trump’s run for the White House four years ago. The case against Jose Ines Garcia Zarate on federal gun charges has been pending since a judge raised “serious concerns” about Garcia Zarate's mental capacities back in January. Two doctors have diagnosed Garcia Zarate with schizophrenia and found him unfit to stand trial. The San Francisco Examiner reports that Garcia Zarate told the court Friday through a Spanish interpreter that he wanted to be sentenced to prison or deported back to Mexico. 720
