SYDNEY, Australia – Koalas are on track to become extinct in New South Wales before 2050, according to a report from the Australian state’s parliament.A committee released the report Tuesday after a year-long inquiry and it’s asking the government to take immediate action to save the nation’s most loved animal.A government estimate showed that there are about 36,000 koalas in the state, but the committee says that estimate is outdated and unreliable.The report says the loss in koalas is partly a result of the 2019-2020 bushfires that devastated the country. The committee says at least 5,000 koalas were lost in the fires over the past year, potentially more.“An estimated 24% of koala habitat on public land has been severely impacted across the state, but in some parts, there has been a devastating loss of up to 81%,” the report says of the wildfire devestation.However, the committee says the most serious threat to koalas is habitat loss.“The ongoing destruction of koala habitat through the clearing of land for agriculture, development, mining and forestry has severely impacted most koala populations in the state over many decades,” wrote committee chair Cate Faehrmann. “The committee found that this fragmentation and loss of habitat poses the most serious threat to koala populations and made a number of key recommendations that stronger action must be taken by government to protect and restore koala habitat on both public and private land.”The committee also found that climate change is having a severe impact on koalas, not only by affecting the quality of their food and habitat, but also by compounding the severity and threats of other impacts, such as drought and bushfires.Along with its findings, the committee provided a long list of recommendations for the government to implement in order to save the state’s koalas. Those included prioritizing the protection of koala habitat corridors, improving monitoring methods and increased funding.One recommendation encourages the government to look into the establishment of a Great Koala National Park on New South Wales’ North Coast. 2120

Starting a business can be hard - it takes a lot more than renting an office and printing business cards.But a new group is launching in San Diego to help women take control of their careers.Dames Collective promises to connect female entrepreneurs to key resources and help them network, so they can launch their own businesses."We don't want to just stand by the sideline and watch women trying to start their own business. We want to help them thrive," said Chanel Sonego, who founded the group with Brittney Hogan.San Diego Attorney Kelly DuFord says her life was a lot different when she had a boss."I was working at least 80 hours a week, and I would bring my work home with me," she said. She says she was missing out on valuable time with her young daughters, so she and her husband Craig launched their own law firm. DuFord still works a lot, but on her own terms - she says she takes time off on Monday mornings and some Wednesdays, but works Saturday nights. DuFord, who does employment law and business formation, says she makes more now than she did when she had a boss."You might be doing something that you don't even know you can make a business out of, but if you are passionate about it and you can do a common thing uncommonly well, you can start your own business," she said. Memberships at Dames Collective are a month, but Sonego says the group is working on lower cost options for students. The city of San Diego also has guidelines for starting a business, including 10 key steps entrepreneurs need to make.   1605

And according to Feeding America, the pandemic has put millions more at risk of experiencing food insecurity.Residents in one Oakland neighborhood have a convenient grocery store for the first time in four decades, and it became even more essential during the pandemic. "It's got to be easy for them to get it, and the more effort there is and time involved in the shopping, the less fresh foods is going to be in that basket," said Brahm Ahmadi, the CEO of Community Foods Market. While he'd never owned a grocery store, Ahmadi understood what the absence of one could mean for a community."Families were disproportionately suffering from diet-related chronic diseases, diabetes, hypertension, heart disease," said Ahmadi. "And then all the residual, other negative impacts that has. For example, family members are sick, they can't work, and then income is reduced."After raising over several million dollars, Ahmadi's vision of a full-service market came to life one year ago."When the pandemic hit, I did still want to come to work because we need a store like this around," said employee Sharon Rance, who's worked at Community Foods Market since it opened."They were one of the stores that survived, they had the essential things we needed," said Eleanor, a local and regular customer. But like the big grocery store chains, the independent market was not immune to the overwhelmed supply chain."I think the whole industry was kind of caught off guard, and then we were also blown away by how difficult it was to build back having product in the store," said Ahmadi. He says changes in the industry are already happening, with manufacturers reducing the number of items they making to keep top-sellers consistently available. Ahmadi knew the market would have to step up efforts to continue serving the already economically fragile community."To help them stretch their even more limited dollars to make ends meet," said Ahmadi. With help from an emergency grant, they've been able to offer shoppers on food stamps a 50 percent discount on their entire purchase. They also began providing free delivery to seniors 65 and older.The market has never been busier. "My belief is this community deserves it, like any other neighborhood, and has the ability to support it," said Ahmadi.By fulfilling this basic human necessity, Ahmadi believes they're laying a foundation to help residents prosper in other areas. 2521

SUFFOLK COUNTY, N.Y. -- Dozens of people tested positive for the coronavirus and hundreds were quarantined after an outbreak in Suffolk County, New York, linked to a sweet 16 party, County Executive Steve Bellone said Tuesday.The party took place at the Miller Place Inn on Sept. 25, with a guest list of 81 people.The Miller Place Inn was fined ,000 for violating state executive orders and health laws, and ,000 for violating county rules.Several positive COVID-19 cases in the Sachem School District were reported to the county on Sept. 30, and during the course of their investigation, the county discovered that the cases were connected to the sweet 16 party.Following a contact tracing investigation, the county identified 37 positive cases connected to the party; 270 people were told to quarantine.It's the first time a businesses was fined by the Suffolk County Health Department over COVID-19-related violations.Bellone said that for the county, this qualifies as a super spreader event.“This was an egregious violation and should serve as a stark reminder of the consequences that exist for flouting COVID-19 protocols,” said Bellone. “These rules and regulations exist for a reason - to keep New Yorkers safe - and we all have an obligation to act responsibly.”This story was originally published by Corey Crockett at WPIX. 1348
