SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Two children suffered injuries Monday when a pick-up truck driven by an elderly man hit tables and parked cars outside a University City Starbucks.The crash happened about 8 a.m. outside the coffee shop at 3202 Governor Drive at Regents Road, according to San Diego Police. The Starbucks is near the University City Post Office.The 85-year-old man driving the truck jumped the curb, crashing into customers.A 6-year-old girl was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries. Police did not release details about her condition. A 2-year-old girl had an injury to her lip but did not need further treatment.San Diego Police have not announced what caused the crash. 689

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- When the March of Dimes was founded in the 1930's, the mission was to fight polio, now the focus is to help all women and babies get the healthcare they need.But there are still plenty of obstacles, especially for women of color.Like Winter, who lost a premature baby, "What can we do to bridge the gap to make sure that African-American women have a great chance to experience birth?"According to March of Dimes black women are three times more likely to die from pregnancy related causes than white women. The organization also reports that black babies are twice as likely to die before their first birthday.In San Diego, the inequities also apply to immigrant communities and those who don't speak English.March of Dimes' job is to reach those under served groups.Marta Bills, with March of Dimes San Diego says there are all sorts of ways the organization is trying to promote equality, including increased funding, providing scientific research and even training healthcare providers to tackle bias."To just ensure that they are providing the most respectful and unbiased care they possibly can," Bills said.March of Dimes is also expanding a program that promotes group prenatal care.It was impacted when Covid hit, but local clinics are figuring out ways to start back up again safely.Bills says the groups give women who participate more time with their doctors but also lead to better outcomes overall because patients tend to show up to their appointments more often. 1506

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - USD head men’s basketball coach Lamont Smith is free Wednesday pending an investigation on domestic violence charges in San Francisco.The San Francisco Police Department released Smith's mugshot from Sunday's arrest. Smith was taken into custody at the Oakland airport just before the team was set to fly home from a game.Smith is accused of three domestic violence charges involving a woman at the team's hotel late Saturday night. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- When COVID-19 forced everyone in, it also forced Canyon Crest Academy students Erika and Vivian to get creative"When quarantine and school closures became a reality for us, I really wanted to give back to society and especially how it's been draining resources for hospitals that are on the front lines, I wanted to use my skillset to provide in any way I can," said Erika. The duo excelled in subjects around STEM and it all started from there."If we're good at physics or chemistry, it's not good enough to just be good at it, you have to make use of it and make an impact with it. Since we're still students the best way to do it was to help other students reach their potential as well," said Vivian.So the two got busy and in July, they rolled out Level Up Academy, a six-week online course with an in-depth stem curriculum. They even included presentations, slides and assignments."I reached out to underclassmen in various clubs who spread it to their friends, then spread it to parents' coworkers." By the time their program started, 30 students were signed up. The fee was a donation made to their page on Rady Children's Hospital's website, all for COVID-19 efforts."We thought this was a really transparent way to show students and parents that we were actually donating because before we thought about donating to other hospitals but it didn't have this public page. Parents and students would just have to trust us we were donating profits there."They raised over ,000 in donations. Their course ended in August and school's back in session but they said hopefully another group will take over their program for another set of students next summer."I just think its so great how a simple idea I had in March, and uniting people together made an impact." 1796
