Hate crime incidents reported to the FBI increased by about 17 percent last year compared to 2016, according to statistics released Tuesday by the FBI.The statistics, which were released in the bureau's annual "Hate Crime Statistics" report, are a compilation of bias-motivated incidents submitted to the FBI by 16,149 law enforcement agencies.The report found that 7,175 hate crimes were reported by law enforcement agencies in 2017, up from 6,121 reported incidents in 2016. While the number has increased, the number of agencies reporting also increased by about 1,000.Of the 7,106 single-bias hate crimes reported, 59.6 percent of victims were targeted because of the offenders' race/ethnicity/ancestry bias; 20.6 percent were targeted because of sexual-orientation bias; 1.9 percent were targeted because of gender identity bias; and 0.6 percent were targeted because of gender bias. GEELONG, Australia – Coronavirus can survive on money, phones and stainless steel for up to 28 days, according to a new study out of Australia.Researchers at the Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness (ACDP) found this can happen if the items are stored in cool and dark conditions.Experts say 68-degrees Fahrenheit is the perfect temperature for the virus to thrive on smooth surfaces, like glass, steel and plastic. The virus doesn’t do as well on porous surfaces, such as cotton.The virus only survived for a week when the temperature went up to 86-degrees Fahrenheit.Dr. Debbie Eagles, the Deputy Director of ACDP, says the results of the study reinforce the need for good practices, like regular handwashing and cleaning surfaces.“At 20 degrees Celsius, which is about room temperature, we found that the virus was extremely robust, surviving for 28 days on smooth surfaces such as glass found on mobile phone screens and plastic banknotes,” said Eagles. “For context, similar experiments for Influenza A have found that it survived on surfaces for 17 days, which highlights just how resilient SARS-CoV-2 is.”Experts say the research may help explain the apparent persistence and spread of the virus in cool environments with high lipid or protein contamination, such as meat processing facilities, and how we might better address that risk. 1358

(AP) — A woman trying to protect her dog was killed by an alligator who pulled her into a lagoon at a private South Carolina resort Monday, authorities said.Cassandra Cline, 45, of Hilton Head Island, was walking the dog along a residential area of Sea Pines Resort when she was attacked, state and local officials said. The 8-foot (2.5-meter) alligator was later found and killed, said David Lucas, a spokesman for the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources."She was walking the dog near the lagoon and the alligator came out of the water and tried to get the dog," Lucas said. "The lady tried to rescue the dog and a maintenance worker ran over to help."Both were trying to save the dog, but the alligator dragged the woman into the water, he said.The dog was unharmed."It's common practice when we have an aggressive alligator like that, we put it down, but it will take some take some time to confirm it's the right alligator," said Capt. Robert McCullough of the Department of Natural Resources.Alligator attacks on humans are extremely rare, Lucas said.Since 1976, there have only been about 20 attacks on people in the state, he said. Until 2016, none of those attacks had been fatal. "It's odd because this is the first time we've heard about an aggressive alligator around a human in the five years that we've been living here."Smith said that at times, alligators have been spotted in yards or pools, but Sea Pines quickly removed those animals."They do a good job. (AP) — Crews are working to recover the body of a tourist who slipped and fell over a Grand Canyon lookout.The fall happened Thursday morning on the Hualapai Tribe's reservation to the west of Grand Canyon National Park.David Leibowitz is a spokesman for Grand Canyon West, a popular tourist destination on the reservation. He says a man in his 50s from Hong Kong fell and slipped at Eagle Point while trying to take photographs. He says the man, who was part of a tour group, is presumed dead.Eagle Point is adjacent to the Skywalk, a horseshoe-shaped glass bridge that juts out from the canyon wall. The rim has some ledges and outcroppings below but no barrier between tourists and the edge.Leibowitz says the area is closed for the day. 773
