SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Airports across the nation saw more than 6 million travelers Thanksgiving weekend, concerning medical professionals.Dr. Davey Smith, Chief of Infectious Diseases at UC San Diego, is worried those who gathered with people outside their household will contract the coronavirus."The infection will go on to spread to their household members, other people they work with, etc., so we'll see more cases on top of more cases," Smith said.San Diego has been in the middle of a surge, with climbing coronavirus cases steeper than we saw in July. Smith said Thanksgiving gatherings could bring a spike on top of it all."It gets actually a little bit worse, so heading into Christmas, we can start seeing our cases rise, and Christmas is an even longer holiday with more opportunities for gathering and if they're not going to be socially distancing I can just see how this piles on," Smith said.Just up the freeway, Los Angeles will see more restrictions Monday, limiting retail capacities, closing playgrounds and prohibiting any gatherings with those outside your household."They might be telling us what's going to happen to us soon. I hope that's not the case, but I do worry they are the canary in the coal mine," he said.The density of cases makes it even more important to take precautions like wearing a mask, washing your hands and keeping your distance. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Almost immediately after Joe Biden and Kamala Harris were announced as the projected winning ticket, the San Diego community took to the streets.In Hillcrest, Biden-Harris supporters lined University Avenue holding signs and flags, with cars packed onto the street honking their horns loudly. The honking and cheering lasted well into the night.“I think healing at this point is what the country needs,” said Joe Hoffman, a Biden supporter in Hillcrest.At Waterfront Park in Downtown San Diego, a crowd of President Trump’s supporters lined the streets with similar signs and cheers, also encouraging people to honk.One San Diego man and supporter of President Trump made the decision to drive to Sacramento through Friday night, arriving Saturday morning to the news of the projected winners. After the overnight drive, Blake Marnell attended a rally in front of the Capitol. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A successful regular season could mean some end-of-the-year award hardware for members of the San Diego Padres.On Monday, the Baseball Writers’ Association of America (BBWAA) revealed the finalists for National League Most Valuable Player, Rookie of the Year, and Manager of the Year.Manny Machado is among the finalists for National League MVP. The Padres’ star third baseman, Dodgers outfielder Mookie Betts, and Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman are all in the running for the award.Noticeably absent from the finalists list is Padres shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr., who was considered among the favorites for the MVP award throughout the season.The last Padres player to be named NL MVP was Ken Caminiti in 1996.The NL Rookie of the Year finalists include Padres second baseman Jake Cronenworth, Alec Bohm of the Phillies, and Devin Williams of the Brewers.If Cronenworth wins the award, he would be the first Padres ROY winner since catcher Benito Santiago in 1987.The Padres’ first-year manager, Jayce Tingler, was named a finalist for the NL’s Manager of the Year award. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A VA hospital specialty clinic in La Jolla was evacuated Thursday afternoon due to a gas leak, the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department confirmed. According to the Department, the VA San Diego Healthcare System hospital's spinal cord facility on the 3300 block of La Jolla Village Drive was evacuated just before 3 p.m. The gas leak happened inside the two-story building, the department said. By 3:45 p.m., the situation was under control and evacuees were allowed to return.It’s unclear what caused the gas leak at this time. 10News will continue to keep you updated as soon as we receive more information. 633

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- An official with the Encinitas Union School District confirmed Sunday a presumptive positive case of COVID-19.In a release sent to families of the district, Superintendent Andree Grey said "individual at Olivenhain Pioneer Elementary" tested positive. Grey could not provide further details citing privacy restrictions."I understand that it can be disconcerting to not have specific information surrounding the individual, however, it is important that we respect the privacy of our students and staff. An individual at Olivenhain Pioneer Elementary has tested presumptive positive for COVID-19. In situations with infectious diseases, we are required to follow the direction of the Center for Disease Control, California Department of Health, and the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA). This includes following procedures related to HIPAA and privacy standards. I understand that it can be disconcerting to not have specific information surrounding the individual, however, it is important that we respect the privacy of our students and staff. At the same time, we want to provide you with as much information as possible. The San Diego County Department of Health and Human Services is currently in the process of investigating and the individual is in home isolation and being monitored. EUSD is notifying individuals who may have been exposed and asking them to self-quarantine. Coronaviruses are a large group of viruses that are common among animals and humans. This novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19 is a newly discovered coronavirus causing respiratory illness that has not been previously detected in animals or humans. The source of this virus is not yet known. Symptoms can include fever, cough and shortness of breath and can appear 2-14 days from exposure. Due to the way the COVID-19 virus is spread, per current protocol (directed by the Centers for Disease Control), HHSA suggests we consider all of us as being potentially exposed. Anyone who is ill should stay home except to get medical care. If you are ill, it is recommended you separate from others in the home, wear a face mask, cover cough and sneezes, clean hands and surfaces often, and avoid sharing personal items. It is important to monitor symptoms for potential worsening including shortness of breath. It should be emphasized that anyone experiencing symptoms should self-isolate and contact your doctor.
