LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Five-year-old NeeCee, a female snow leopard at the Louisville Zoo, has tested positive for SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19 in humans, the zoo announced in a release issued Friday. The Louisville Zoo is awaiting confirmatory results of the other two male snow leopards – Kimti and Meru. All three cats are doing well with very mild symptoms. The zoo said it continues to monitor their health closely and expects all three cats to recover. No other animals are showing symptoms at this time. The three snow leopards began exhibiting minor respiratory symptoms, including an occasional dry cough or wheeze, within the last two weeks. It is suspected that NeeCee acquired the infection from an asymptomatic staff member, despite precautions by the Zoo.“Fortunately, based on clinical cases in large cats at other zoos in the country to this point, SARS-CoV-2 infection does not appear to be life-threatening,” said Dr. Zoli Gyimesi, the zoo's senior staff veterinarian. “We will be closely monitoring the snow leopards for ongoing symptoms and resampling them to identify when they have cleared the infection.”In April 2020, four tigers and three lions were confirmed positive at the Bronx Zoo in New York. An additional three tigers at an AZA zoo in Tennessee were confirmed to be infected this fall. Just last week, the Barcelona Zoo announced four lions tested positive for SARS-CoV-2. Many schools across the country have put brand new cleaning and disinfecting procedures in place to welcome students back during the coronavirus pandemic. With Election Day, some schools prepared to welcome a new group of people: voters."We are the third district in the state of Kentucky. We are 15 minutes outside of Cincinnati so we are the southern suburb of Cincinnati, so we have 25 schools in Northern Kentucky in this district which, for 7 of them, almost one-third are being used as polling places," said Barbara Brady with Boone County Schools.Boone County Schools prepped four high schools, two middle schools and one elementary school so voters could cast their ballots. A number of school districts nationwide will be doing the same, at a time when protecting students and the public from COVID-19 is a priority."Before, after and during. The spaces used are the gymnasiums so obviously it's a big open space. They’ll be cleaned and sanitized as they normally are even during school so it’ll be before, during and after because the kids will be back in school the next day," said Brady.Boone County Schools and the county government will split the cost of a custodian to disinfect the polling area. In Madison, Wisconsin, City Clerk Maribeth Witzel-Behl is providing each polling place, which includes schools, with a stipend to help with added cleaning costs. Men may have a harder time maintaining friendships during the pandemic.Experts say it’s because social distancing guidelines have forced men out of their normal ways of communicating.“Men tend to construct their friendships on a shoulder-to-shoulder basis and women tend to use a face-to-face basis, so guys will get together and do things, like sports, going to the sports bar, activities,” said University of Maryland Professor Geoffrey Greif, author of the book “Buddy System: Understanding Male Friendships.”Greif says it's rare for men to reach out to each other just to talk. Men tend to be more cautious about how much they share.They'll also only ask to do something together so many times before the invitation is returned.“We're just not socialized to feel comfortable. We don't want to seem like we are stalking another guy for a friendship. MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. — An alligator crossing a road in Manatee County led to a deadly crash on Thursday night, the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) says.According to an FHP press release, an alligator crossing State Road 70 walked into the path of a car at around 10:40 p.m. local time. The driver tried to swerve out of the way and lost control, authorities said.Troopers say the car ran off the road, into a ditch full of water, and then crashed into a tree.
