BEIJING/YICHUN Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- China on Wednesday started the official probe into the Yichun plane crash which killed 42 people and injured 54 others while domestic airlines were ordered to overhaul safety measures.The State Council, or China's Cabinet, has set up a special work group to probe the cause of the crash. Chinese President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao ordered a thorough investigation and beefed-up efforts to ensure air travel safety.Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang, who led an investigation team to the lush forested city of Yichun overnight after the crash, headed the work group.Zhang called upon the work-group's first meeting Wednesday but details of the meeting were not made public.Li Jian, vice director of the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), told Xinhua that the work group has started to gather evidence for the probe, but the process would take some time.A Brazil-made ERJ-190 turbine jet of Henan Airlines crashed during the landing at the forests-surrounded Lindu Airport of Yichun City late Tuesday night, killing 42 and injuring 54 passengers and the crew on board.Fifteen severely injured, including children and a vice minister, were transferred to four key hospitals in Harbin, the provincial capital on Wednesday night.Initial probes and survivors' accounts indicate the plane missed the runway and crashed on the ground, cracking the cabin and triggering a mild explosion.No signs of sabotage have been found so far, investigators said.The black boxes of the jet have been retrieved.The Lindu airport of Yichun was closed down shortly while operations of the Henan Airlines were suspended.The board of directors of Henan Airlines on Wednesday sacked the airline's general manager Li Qiang and appointed an acting manager to replace him.Cao Bo, Li's replacement, served as the chief pilot of Shenzhen Airlines, the parent company of Henan Airliens.Major Chinese carriers, including the China Eastern and China Southern, on Wednesday called upon emergency meetings to review the companies' safety measures.

BEIJING, July 30 (Xinhuanet) --Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co is expected to complete it takeover of Swedish luxury car brand Volvo from US automaker Ford Motor Co on Monday after getting government approval for the deal.Ministry of Commerce officials told China Daily on Thursday that the government cleared the Volvo deal on Monday 26, after the National Development and Reform Commission cleared the proposal last week.Geely has also got the necessary anti-trust approvals from the European Union and the US government for the deal.Li Shufu (center), chairman of Zhejiang Geely Holding Co, arrives for a news conference in Beijing earlier this year. BEIJING, July 11 (Xinhua) -- China's Central Meteorological Station warned Sunday that rainstorms would again batter many provinces and regions in the coming days bringing with it bigger risks of new flooding and other geological disasters in central and eastern China.From Monday until Wednesday, the observatory forecast some regions in provinces including Guizhou, Hunan, Hubei, and Anhui will see heavy rain.Eastern Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, central Henan, Chongqing and Shanghai will also see rainstorms during the next three days.A total of 14.92 million people in 10 provinces and regions along China's longest river, the Yangtze, have had their lives disrupted after torrential rains began pounding since July 8, a statement from the Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters (SFDH) said Sunday.Rain-triggered floods also brought damage to 806,000 hectares of farmland and destroyed 20,000 houses, with direct economic losses standing at 8.6 billion yuan (1.3 billion U.S. dollars), a statement from the flood control authority said.Official figures showed during the 10 days ended on Saturday, at least 50 people were confirmed dead and 15 others were still missing in 9 provinces after heavy rains.Rain-triggered floods have left 14 people dead and three others missing in Chongqing Municipality since Thursday, toppling more than 3,000 houses, partly cutting off power supply and causing the evacuation of 80,400 people, according to the local government.The floods have affected the lives of more than 1.7 million people in 17 districts and counties there, incurring 1.34 billion yuan in direct economic losses, Chongqing's flood-control and drought-relief headquarters said.In Hubei Province, 17 people were killed and three others missing amid downpours since July 3, which affected the lives of more than 5.63 million people in 75 counties across the province, Hubei's Civil Affairs Administration said Sunday.More than 182,500 residents had been relocated after heavy rains damaged more than 71,000 houses, inundated 537,650 hectares of farmland, cutting off many road services and suspended power supply.In Jiangxi Province, more than 34,000 people have been evacuated since July 5 when downpours began to hit 22 counties, pulling down more than 2,400 houses.So far 620,000 people from five provinces in eastern and central China have been evacuated from flood-hit areas as soldiers from the People's Liberation Army and armed police forces mobilize to fight the floods.Chen Lei, Minister of Water Resources, also SFDH vice director, said at a work meeting Sunday that local authorities should come up with detailed plans for flood control to minimize losses caused by the disaster.A total of 8 work teams sent by SFDH are also helping with flood control work in provinces along the Yangtze and in northwest China's Qinghai Province, where thousands of people were evacuated Sunday from Golmud City as a risky reservoir nearby was on the verge of breaching after heavy rain.But the water level of the reservoir has begun easing, the SFDH said, as temporary channels had been dug to divert water.Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu urged at a work conference Saturday relevant departments to closely monitor the weather and issue alerts promptly, reinforce dams and dikes as well as resettle people affected by the floods.Meteorological experts warned cities should be on alert against water logging while mountainous areas should be wary of mud flows and landslides triggered by heavy rains.

BEIJING, June 12 (Xinhua) -- China's top economic planner Saturday forecast a "mild" year-on-year rise in the consumer price index (CPI), a main gauge of inflation, in June, resulting in an average CPI increase of around 2.6 percent in the first half.The projection by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) came one day after China released its latest economic data.The latest estimate was revised up from a 2.5-percent CPI rise the NDRC projected on May 18.China's CPI hit a 19-month high with a 3.1 percent year-on-year increase in May, surpassing the central government's targeted 3 percent annual inflation limit.During the January-May period, China's CPI rose 2.5 percent year on year.According to the NDRC's projection posted on its website, China's June CPI will dip slightly month on month, but still post a "mild year-on-year increase" due to the low comparison basis in the same month last year.The NDRC said positive factors for basic price stability were on the increase, citing sharp falls in international commodities prices, the government's macro control policies and a crack-down on farm produce speculation as well as a possible good grain harvest this summer.Sheng Laiyun, spokesman for the National Bureau of Statistics, said Friday at a press conference that China had the basics for keeping prices under control this year."Although China faces quite a lot of pressure, the 3-percent target (for the whole year) is still possible with effort," he said.
