SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A man united families across the United States after digging into a military training crash that happened 50 years ago at MCAS El Toro.Johnathan Keene often visited his cousin's grave at Arlington National Cemetery, "I go up to visit him twice a year, typically Memorial Day and Veteran's Day." On January 15, 2019, he was in the neighborhood, stopped by and it was that day that he noticed Maj. Walter Zytkewicz grave next to his cousin's grave.Maj. Zytkewicz was in the Marines, like his cousin, and died the day before his cousin. He said that 'grabbed' him.Up until that day he knew his cousin, Capt. Robert Walls, died in a military crash, but it wasn't spoken of at the dinner table.He knew there must be a connection to the two men, so he started digging. He found four other Marines were on the same training flight July 30th, 1970. "Major Zytkewicz was 2 months away from retiring," Keene said he was studying to become a realtor.Staff Sergeant Kenneth Davis, 1st Lieutenant Mullins and Corporal Kenneth Metzdorf. Keene said Metzdorf wasn't supporsed to be on the flight, "called his best friend and said hey could you go on this flight for me today? So they switched and that cost him [his life]."Keene tracked down the redacted incident report and filled in the gaps with interviews from witnesses and Marines who knew the men on board."Witnesses say they waited too late to pull the plane out of the angle of attack and the plane hit, bounced, flipped upside down, hit again, bounced in the air, the left wing fell off, all four props fell off. The plane landed right in the middle of the air field. Flames and fuel streamed down the runway, they said it was basically a long stream of fuel and fire," he said.Flames Keene was amazed to learn his cousin and Metzdorf walked through, "the report listed 80%-90% coverage of third degree burns. I can't even imagine how he walked out," he said shocked.Mullins was killed on impact, found 50 yards from the plane with a broken leg. Walls, Zytkewicz and Metzdorf died days later from their injuries.Keene said Walls died from burns in his lungs.SSgt. Davis passed in 2013.The exact cause was redacted in the report. Keene believes the Marine Corps wants to preserve the honor of the pilot and protect his family."After the crash, the material that made up Marine Corps and Navy flight suits was changed. They thought it was a flame retardant material, unfortunately it burned and melted to their skin," he said.Keene hopes these difficult discoveries will fuel Marines' admiration. To keep their memories alive, Keene created a plaque with the team's names that will be presented at MCAS Miramar, where the squadron now resides."Every other Marine that goes through that squadron will see that plaque and realize there's five men that in some way or another touched their lives from either a safety stand-point or history and lineology of VMGR-352," Keene said. 2946

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A mountain lion cub rescued by the San Diego Humane Society continues to make great strides in its recovery.The Humane Society said the female cub was found by Vista Grande Fire Station firefighters near a road in Idyllwild on Sept. 2. The cub was “semiconscious, extremely emaciated, dehydrated, weak and had tremors,” according to the Humane Society.Under the care of the Humane Society’s Project Wildlife, the cub -- believed to be 14 weeks old -- has made significant health progress.Through daily fluid therapy, medications, and proper meals, the Humane Society said the cub has increased her weight from 10.5 pounds to 22 pounds.Christine Barton, the director of Operations & Wildlife Rehabilitation at the Humane Society’s Ramona campus, said, “With each passing day, she becomes more active and responsive and, though she still has some medical issues to overcome from being in such a fragile state, we are delighted she has responded well to our treatment and are hopeful she will make a full recovery. Mountain lions are special predators and we are proud to have an expert team trusted by the state of California to care for the species.”The Humane Society added:“Mountain lions typically stay with their mother until they disperse to live a solitary life at around 12-18 months of age. Because it is not safe to return a young mountain lion to the wild if found injured or orphaned as a kitten, Project Wildlife has been working with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife to monitor her progress and when stabilized, to ensure she has a good permanent home at a qualified facility.San Diego Humane Society acquired the Fund for Animals Wildlife Center in Ramona on Sept. 1 from the Humane Society of the United States. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Carlos family hit hard by the pandemic is picking up the pieces after a fire gutted their home.Raegan Gaedke's brother shot cellphone video of smoke pouring out of their home on Verlane Drive on Sunday evening. Minutes before, Raegan, 16, and her brother Ryley, 17, had returned home from a grocery run, before discovering smoke in their parents' bedroom."Ran and got my dog out. My brother turned off the power and got the fire extinguisher, but it was too late. The fire spread too much," said Gaedke.Their mom Cyndi, who was visiting relatives, says fire crews later told them the cause was a window air conditioner. The home they had been renting for the last 12 years is a total loss."So hard for me to comprehend we have nothing. It's all gone," said Cyndi.Cyndi says they did not have renters insurance. It's a purchase set to the side."You think you'll get back to it, and you don't. Won't make that mistake again. It's hard to describe how stressful this has been," said Cyndi.The stress levels already high since the start of the pandemic. Cyndi's husband, the breadwinner of the family and a commercial fisherman, has been out of work. His job counted on now-grounded international flights for shipping. The amount of money they family is receiving from unemployment is modest. Paying the rent had become a concern."We did have quite a bit of savings, but that's all gone. it's been tough and awful. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A juvenile was arrested Wednesday for allegedly making a threat against a San Diego Unified School District high school.The juvenile was arrested at Serra High School for the alleged threat, according to SDUSD. The suspect told school police the comment was not meant to be taken seriously. While police deemed the threat non-credible, they determined the comment meant the definition of a criminal threat.The language of the threat and how it was issued was not immediately clear.RELATED: DA: Nine minors charged in recent threats to local schoolsClasses at Serra High were held on a normal scheduled Wednesday despite the report.
