BEIJING, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu called for greater efforts to fight floods and droughts Monday at a meeting held by the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters.     Hui said governments at all levels should place priority on ensuring people's safety and taking care of people in disaster-hit regions. LANZHOU, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- A total of 550 primary and middle school students flew back to quake-hit Chinese provinces from Russia Wednesday after completing a three-week recuperative tour.     The teenagers, 340 from Sichuan Province, 110 from Gansu Province and 100 from Shaanxi Province, were invited by the Russian government to recuperate at the "Ocean" All-Russia Children's Care Center in Vladivostok, Far East, since July 23.     The students boasted excellent performance at their schools and demonstrated bravery in the devastating earthquake in May last year. "Students danced and sang everyday. They were so happy," he said.     "What touched me most was the sincerity of the Russian hosts," Liu said. "They were very thoughtful."     "I was also very happy to make friends with students from many other countries, such as Russia, Japan and Vietnam," six-grader Zhang Dapeng from Gansu's Wenxian County said. "I enjoyed learning different cultures from them."     On May 12, 2008, an 8.0-magnitude earthquake jolted Sichuan and neighboring Shaanxi and Gansu provinces, leaving more than 87,000 dead or missing and more than 370,000 injured.     Since 2008, two batches of more than 1,500 pupils from Sichuan, Gansu, and Shaanxi have been invited to recuperate in Russia. Last year, the first group of 1,018 students went to Russia for rehabilitation.

PITTSBURGH, United States, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Friday called on world leaders to make every effort to promote global economic growth and a comprehensive, balanced and sustainable socioeconomic development.     In a speech at the Group of 20 (G-20) economic summit in Pittsburgh, Hu said the world economy has seen positive signs since the two G-20 summits held in Washington in November and in London in April.     "The international community's confidence has strengthened, financial markets have moved toward stability and the world economy has seen positive signs," the Chinese president said.     Hu warned that the foundation of an economic recovery is not yet solid, and that many uncertainties remain.     "A primary task at present," he said, "is to counter the international financial crisis and promote a healthy world economic recovery." We should value the important role of technological cooperation in promoting balanced development, reduce man-made barriers to technology transfer, and create an enabling environment for developing countries to narrow the development gap," Hu said.     The Chinese leader said his country has attached great importance to comprehensive, balanced and sustainable socioeconomic growth, and has mainly relied on expanding domestic demand, in mitigating the impact of the international financial crisis.     "In the first half of this year, despite the drastic contraction in overseas demand, China's GDP managed to grow by 7 percent year-on-year," he said.     Hu said that China has taken an active role in international development cooperation, and has been actively engaged in international cooperation to tackle the crisis since it broke out.     He said China will follow through on its assistance pledges and measures in a responsible manner, and within its capabilities offer more help to developing countries, particularly the least developed nations in Africa.     "I am confident that with the concerted efforts of the entire international community, we will prevail over this international financial crisis and usher in a more prosperous future for the world economy," he said.     Leaders from the Group of 20 gathered in Pittsburgh on Thursday and Friday to discuss ways to promote a recovery from the world economic and financial crisis.

BEIJING, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- Former Chinese ambassador to Brazil Chen Duqing said Saturday China may play a significant role in Riode Janeiro's preparations for the 2016 Olympic Games.     "Compared with the other applicants, currently Rio de Janeiro still has a lot to do to improve its sports facilities and other infrastructure, which indicates a special opportunity for Chinese companies," Chen told Xinhua Saturday in an exclusive interview.     The costs of preparing for the event in 2016 are estimated at roughly 12 billion U.S. dollars. However, the event is expected to generate 250 billion.     Zhou Zhiwei, an expert in Brazil studies with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, noted that for Rio de Janeiro, traffic and infrastructure are the city's weak points.     Beating rivals Chicago, Tokyo and Madrid, Rio de Janeiro won the right to host the world's largest stage of sporting events after three failed attempts.     Rio de Janeiro's win also marks the first time that an Olympic Games will be held in South America.     Chen said as big third world countries, both China and Brazil have cooperated closely in applying for host cities, making preparations and organizing the Games in the past few years.     In 2007, China's General Administration of Sports sent teams to Brazil to draw experiences from the Pan American Games. PHUKET, Thailand, July 23 (Xinhua) -- China's Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi told reporters Thursday on the sidelines of the ASEAN meeting series that about the Korea Peninsula's nuclear issue, the UN Security Council's resolutions should be implemented and all sides should work hard to avoid escalation of tension.     "China's stand is very firm. We are working very hard for the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, and we are totally against nuclear proliferation...This issue, the nuclear issue, should be solved by peaceful means through diplomatic negotiation," Yang said.     Yang made the remark before he entered the venue for the 16th ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), a top security forum in Asia which is held in the Thai southern island of Phuket on Thursday.
