AKRON, Ohio — More than 200 Ellet High School students received their diplomas Friday night at Akron Civic Theatre in Ohio. Among them was an 87-year-old man getting an honorary diploma, 70 years after he left school for the military.Floyd Edward Hoskins, known to friends and family members as Ed, left Ellet High School in 1949 at age 17 to join the military.“Three years, three months, 19 days,” Hoskins said of his total time in the Army. During that time, he said, he was supposed to serve in Korea but was sent to Alaska for two years instead.When he came home, Hoskins said he initially had trouble finding a job but eventually landed one at Goodyear Tire and Rubber, where he worked for “44 years, four months, three weeks and one day.”Hoskins moved to Hawaii two years ago to live with one of his sons and his daughter-in-law. His daughter-in-law, Cynthia Allen Hoskins, began doing some research into veterans’ benefits.“We are retired military, my husband and I,” Cynthia Allen Hoskins said. “And we were doing some research as far as our kids and their benefits in order to continue their college education.”She ran across information about the benefits the State of Ohio provides to veterans, where she learned her father-in-law might be eligible to receive his high school diploma. She inquired with his former school and found out he was eligible.“His reaction was kind of, ‘Ah, I don’t know if I really want to do this. It’s just a piece of paper,’ ” Cynthia Allen Hoskins said. “But after we explained to him, ‘Dad, you know, you really pushed education on us, we push it onto the grandkids. So why not?’ You know, if this is something that you deserve, go for it.”She said her father-in-law eventually came around to the idea.On Friday, when asked if he ever thought this day would come, Ed Hoskins said, “No, never.”“It’s an honor, but it’s scary,” he said, tearing up. “I’m not used to being in the limelight.”Decades older than his fellow graduates, Ed Hoskins received his diploma first, to loud applause. 2039

Amazon has turned Prime Day into a summer shopping holiday — and rival retailers like Target want to claim a piece of that spending next week.Target is running "Deal Days" on Monday and Tuesday, July 15 and 16, the same dates as Amazon's two-day Prime Day event. Target said it will offer 40% off some furniture, 30% off some small appliances and cookware, and other deals on toys, sporting goods and bedding.Prime Day has become Amazon's annual summer show of force in the shopping world. Amazon uses the savings event to spotlight its own products and hook new members on Prime, its 9 annual free-shipping program. This year Amazon says Prime Day will include more than one million deals, such as steep discounts on its own Alexa-enabled devices.Target is looking to compete in part by playing up the fact that customers don't need a membership to score deals. A Virginia doctor was gunned down with his tour guide while on vacation in Belize, according to local authorities.Gary Swank was visiting the Central American country with his family. He had been on a fishing boat with local guide Mario Graniel when they were both shot dead, Belize Police Commissioner Chester Williams said in a press conference Monday recorded by the San Pedro Sun newspaper.In the recording, Williams said the tour guide had a disagreement with a local gang kingpin, and agrees that Swank was a "victim of circumstance."Graniel had earlier reported to police that someone fired shots at his home on Friday, but he never filed a formal complaint, Williams said."We maintain police presence in the area to protect him and the community from further shootings but we can't follow the man everywhere he goes," he said. A number of states in the last 24 hours have taken the extraordinary step of closing most entertainment venues hoping to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. These restrictions are in line with recommendations by the CDC to limit the number of people in one location. Here are some of the states who have announced these measures:Louisiana: On Monday, Gov.
