SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- As San Diego County awaits state guidance on how to move forward with reopening different sectors, a local church continues to defy public health orders by operating inside.Under the current public health order, religious services may continue outside with social distancing in place.Awaken Church was sent a cease and desist letter from the county’s public health officer, Dr. Wilma Wooten, for operating inside in July.A month later, the church is defying the health order again by resuming indoor operations on Sunday, August 23, the church’s 15th anniversary. Services and locations are posted on the church's website. A video on the church’s website shows pastors Jurgen and Leanne Matthesius speaking about why they have decided to reopen. The two said it was time to reopen and that “fighting for our religious freedoms and pushing back against government overreach is not only worth the cost; it’s essential.”In the video, the pastors say that the governor and county officials continue to keep churches under strict regulations, which prevents them from meeting the needs of their congregation.“Sadly, we’ve had five people connected to our church that have lost their lives, not from the virus but because of the virus. This was due to many factors, including suicide, drug overdose, and severe neglect from a hospital who was primarily focused on their COVID patients,” said Leanna Matthesius in the video.While county supervisor Nathan Fletcher acknowledged the importance of religious freedom and constitutional rights, he spoke of his frustrations with the church at a county COVID-19 press conference Monday. “It is very frustrating to see an entity that has an avenue to gather that is allowable, that is acceptable, that is much safer, choose to openly defy that in order to expose the members of their congregation to a very dangerous situation,” said Fletcher. “Just gather outdoors, physically distance, and wear a face covering.”Under the county’s public health order, houses of worship can continue to operate if “outdoor services and cultural ceremonial activities may be conducted provided all persons practice social distancing.”A county spokesperson tells ABC 10News that the church isn’t facing additional action from the county as of right now.ABC 10News reached out to Awaken Church for further comment but did not hear back. 2380

SAN DIEGO -- Nestled off of Camino Del Rio West in the Midway District, the Body Shop sits between a Navis Pack and Ship site and the "Les Girls" adult entertainment club on Riley Street. The Body Shop strip club welcomed customers for five decades before it closed last December. This week, Rock Church announced they'll be moving in. Rock Church has five campuses across San Diego County. They have a school and now, they have plans for the property in the Midway District. They said the purchase is about more than repurposing a strip club - it's about transforming the neighborhood. "We thought it was a great idea because we know the pain that goes on in that building," said Miles McPherson, pastor at Rock Church. "Not just the women, but the men who go there and their families.”The church’s main campus on Rosecrans is roughly a mile and a half away from the new property. "We don’t know what we're going to do with the building, we just know what it won’t be used for," McPherson said. For decades, parents have explained to their kids why there's a huge sign that says 'nude girls' in their neighborhood, he said. Soon, it won't be necessary."It would be nice to put 'Rock Church' on top of that billboard, but that's another step," he said. "We’ll get to that. But you know the people in that community have been looking at that building for 50 years, and hopefully we can put something more positive in that building.”In addition to taking over the building, McPherson said the church plans to do outreach in the community. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Two years ago the Norton Sound was docked in San Diego Bay and burned for several days. Now, San Diego is hiring an outside consultant to look into the cargo fire. San Diego Fire gave 10News a statement Friday. They didn’t offer specifics about what the consultant might recommend, but say the focus is to determine if any additional equipment or training is needed when dealing with emergencies on the bay. Back in 2017, Harbor Police told 10News, “It was to my understanding that the furthest a firefighter made it was 6 feet before they started getting pushed about the fire.” Looking back, even businesses remember how horrible the smoke was over the days the fire burned, “People stopped sitting outside and employees complained about it affecting their health.” says Edgewater Grill assistant manager, Sergio Velasco. While the smoke bellowed out of the ship for nearly a week, no one was injured and the fire stayed contained and didn’t spread to any other structures. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Thursday San Diego city leaders announced the city will be joining AARP’s network of age-friendly communities.This means elected officials have made a commitment to prepare for San Diego’s aging population with policies that will focus on AARP’s “8 Domains of Livability” which include communication, civic participation, housing and transportation.At a press conference in front of San Diego City Hall, Councilmember Chris Ward said the city is committed to building a “sustainable and inclusive city where San Diegans of all ages and abilities can have long, active, and productive lives.”San Diego now joins Chula Vista, La Mesa, and the County of San Diego in becoming an age-friendly community.“San Diego’s membership in the AARP Network of Age-Friendly Communities and our local partnership with The San Diego Foundation are essential to helping residents live easily and comfortably in their homes and communities as they age,” said Ward.“This is just the beginning, the hard work begins, the implementation part of it is where it’s at,” said Joe Garbanzos with AARP California. “It’s good to see that the city recognized that this is good framework to use to help advance livable communities in the area.”Kevin Mayor Faulconer was not present at the news conference, but wrote the following statement.“Here in San Diego we’re focused on building more affordable housing, increasing mobility choices, and creating livable communities to improve the quality of life for all San Diegans, including older adults,” said Faulconer. “We also recognize the importance of preparing for San Diego’s aging population with policies that enhance healthy aging, civic participation, and social inclusion. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- San Diegans have a new opportunity to go back to school without fear of being saddled with student loan debt.The San Diego Workforce Partnership and U.C. San Diego Extension are teaming up to create what's called an income share agreement. Here's how it works:People complete a roughly yearlong certificate program in digital marketing, business intelligence, front-end web design or java programming at UCSD Extension. The fund will front the student's entire tuition, plus support services to total about ,500. Grads only make payments on it if they have a job that pays at least ,000 a year. "Once you get a foothold in some of these jobs, your salary potential grows even faster," said Andy Hall, chief operating officer of the San Diego Workforce Partnership. Grads would be billed 6 to 8 percent of their pre-tax salary per month, but they'd never pay more than ,500. Plus, all payments top after three to five years. The idea is that the most successful grads can fund the next generation of those looking to retrain.Google.org, Strada Education Network and the James Irvine Foundation are backing the program, along with an anonymous donor.
