VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — Two men were arrested after stealing a car and crashing into another vehicle Tuesday in the North County.The two men carjacked a driver at gunpoint just before 3 p.m. in the 900 block of Postal Way in Vista, according to San Diego Sheriff's Department. After yanking the driver out of his vehicle and taking off, the two men soon crashed into another vehicle, before fleeing.A detective who happened to be in the area heard the call over the radio and started searching for the suspect, SDSO said. When he spotted the suspects, he began to follow them and relay directions to an SDSO helicopter overhead.Deputies took over and a brief pursuit began. The two men crashed into a curb and fled the vehicle. Deputies caught both men after a foot chase.SDSO said a loaded gun and illegal drugs were discovered in the vehicle.SDSO said the two men, identified as Joseph Laxton and Ricardo Hernandez, were arrested on charges of carjacking, hit-and-run, a felon in possession of a firearm, drugs, violating parole, threat causing death or great bodily injury, and participating in a criminal street gang. 1128

It’s been celebrated by African Americans in the country for years.“I actually didn’t learn about that until I was an adult, just in general conversation speaking with other people,” said Erica Parham.Parham is a product of the Hampton school division in Virginia Beach area.“I wasn’t taught that in school at all,” she adds.She wants to see change. Her boys, Jaxon and Sebastian, go to Kempsville Elementary School in Virginia Beach.“They knew about Fourth of July in day care,” but they were never taught about the day in 1865 when African American slaves found out they were free."I do believe that large parts of the Virginia Department of Education curriculum are inadequate to really tell the story of slavery and racism in Virginia,” said Brian Teucke.Teucke is an 8th grade civics teacher at Page Middle School and also the president of the Gloucester Education Association."There are huge gaps in our curriculum that need to be addressed, and [they] can be by enhancing the curriculum,” he adds.The Department of Education says new history textbooks and curriculum must correspond with the standards of learning, and revising the SOLs takes about two years, meaning it will take some time before Juneteenth makes it inside textbooks.The department encourages teachers to use online resources in the classroom. WASHINGTON (AP) — Attorney General William Barr defended the aggressive federal law enforcement response to civil unrest in America as he testified for the first time before the House Judiciary Committee. He pushed back against angry, skeptical Democrats who said President Donald Trump’s administration is unconstitutionally suppressing dissent. The hearing, held Tuesday as the late civil rights icon John Lewis laid in state steps away in the Capitol rotunda, highlighted the wide election-year gulf between the two parties on police brutality and systemic racism in law enforcement, which Barr argued does not exist. Massive protests have sparked unrest across the nation following the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police and calls for reform have grown louder.Tuesday's hearing is part of a series of hearings in which Democrats on the committee are holding to investigate what they say has become a politicized department. In his opening statements, Barr referred to an investigation into the 2016 Trump campaign's ties to Russia as "bogus" and asserted that he acts independently of President Donald Trump and his administration. He also addressed ongoing protests across the country and the Trump administration's use of federal agents to restore peace. The department later recommended a lesser sentence, prompting all DOJ lawyers assigned to Stone's case to resign. These efforts were initially announced in early July by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.Reducing drug prices has been an ongoing effort of the Trump administration. (KGTV) - Sentencing for a man accused of luring an Earl Warren Middle School girl away from school on multiple occasions to have sex, was postponed after the public defender's wife went into labor.Jeff Calica, 20, pleaded guilty to one count of lewd and lascivious acts with a minor early this year.RELATED: Suit: Computer access at middle school opened door to sex predatorA lawsuit alleges Calica started talking with the 12-year-old Solana Beach student on Google Chat during school hours after she met him through his YouTube channel. Within of month of the first conversation the girl's family's attorney, Steve Estey, said Calica lured the student at least twice to the school parking lot for sex during lunch periods.The girl reportedly told her parents, leading to the investigation and guilty plea from Calica.Calica is scheduled to return to court for sentencing on Dec. 18. 936
