(KGTV) - A grieving dog owner says a routine surgery turned deadly after his dog suffered burns during a brief stay.In early May, John San Filippo brought 11-year-old Sofia, a Boxer mix, to the Bastet Veterinary Hospital for knee surgery."Dropped her off in the morning and picked up her up in the afternoon. She was doing great," said San Filippo.Six days after the surgery, San Filippo found several oozing sores on her right side. The vet told him the electric blanket used to warm Sofia had somehow burned her. "I was stunned, but at that point, it was just three little spots," said San Filippo.Within weeks, the full extent of the burns emerged: 3rd- and 4th-degree burns on over 40% of her body. Sofia developed sepsis and pneumonia, before she died in early June."Just broke down crying ... brought her in for knee surgery and my dog was barbecued," said San Filippo. San Filippo has filed a complaint with the State Veterinary Medical Board and wants the business shut down.Bastet Veterinary Hospital released the following statement: "We are deeply saddened by the passing of Sofia, which was a result of thermal burns derived from the malfunction of our patient warming system. We are committed to working with all involved parties to help recoup financial losses, and our hearts grieve along with Sofia'a family for their loss."Experts suggest asking your veterinarian about how they warm animals during anesthesia. EL CAJON (KGTV) - After 50 years of service, the well-known San Diego Highway Man is retiring. Thomas Weller has been helping thousands of people stuck on the side of the road since 1966. He tells 10News he started helping after a man helped him in a blizzard when he was a teenager living in Illinois.“I was on my way home about one or two in the morning and the blizzard put me off the road into a snow bank," said Weller.Weller says he never forgot that moment and hoped to be that saving grace for many others. Turns out he tells us he’s lost track of how many people he’s helped.“More than ten thousand, it's just I never keep track.” Weller had a stroke back in March and since then decided it’s best given his limited capabilities to retire.“I’ve lost my strength and my agility, not my judgment yet because I’m still driving.” He tells 10News it’s for the best that he retires because of how increasingly dangerous distracted driving has made the roads."It’s just extremely dangerous out there, more so now than it used to be.”While he is giving up one of his favorite passions in life, he isn’t giving up his outlook on life, “the most beautiful compensations of this life you cannot sincerely help another without helping yourself in the bargain.” 1266

EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) -- Neighbors say two elderly residents of the Lincoln Palms Apartment in El Cajon were taken to the hospital Wednesday, after an explosion on Lincoln Avenue. New resident Jorge Limon told 10News Reporter Rina Nakano he and his grilfriend Samantha were unpacking when they noticed an odd smell. Later, they heard what sounded like two explosions. "We thought somebody threw a table out of the window or something. But then we saw the smoke and fire," Limon said, adding that he immediately grabbed his fire extinguisher to help.  The explosion happened on the first floor of the building around 8 p.m., just below Limon's new apartment.Fire crews arrived four minutes after the 911 call, but were surprised to see that the flames were already out when they arrived. With his extinguisher, Limon was able to put out the flames. The explosion shattered the windows of the downstairs unit, leaving the curtains and glass all around the pool. Inside Limon found the two elderly residents, who he said both suffered injuries. "They both went ot the burn center, which means they had enough burns to where it was a concern," said Heartland Fire and Rescue Battalion Chief Bent Koch. San Diego Gas & Electric, El Cajon Police and several other agencies are investigating what caused the explosion. Limon told 10News his fire extinguisher was no accident. "I made a big deal to bring it," he said. Doctors treating a patient who had complained of repeatedly losing his balance made an unexpected discovery: The 84-year-old man had a 3?-inch pocket of air in his brain.The man had been referred to the emergency room by his primary physician in Northern Ireland.He told his doctor about weeks of recurrent falls and three days of left-side arm and leg weakness, according to?the report, published in the journal BMJ Case Reports. EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) -- An elderly man was struck by a car and killed as he crossed an El Cajon street Wednesday night.At around 11:30 p.m., El Cajon police and paramedics were called to the intersection of Jamacha and Main Street in response to a pedestrian hit by a vehicle.Police said a pickup truck was traveling northbound on Jamacha when it hit the 80 year-old-man. Officers say the victim's leg was amputated, and he was not breathing when they arrived at the scene.The victim, who was not identified, was taken to the hospital where he died from his injuries.According to police, the driver remained at the scene and was cooperating with investigators.Alcohol or drugs did not appear to be factors in the incident, police said. 746
