It can be one subtle change that twists the truth. Experts say misinformation is spreading faster and easier than ever before. They’re hoping to address the issue by asking why people believe and share false information.Researchers say the process people use to process and share information, particularly on social media, can help provide some answers. Studies show people tend to use cognitive shortcuts when they decide what to share online.For a person sharing a particular article or picture, those shortcuts involve asking themselves:Is the content consistent with what they have shared before?Is the content consistent with what most others share?Does the content come from a credible source?Researchers think manipulating those factors could be key in getting people to share posts with misinformation and increase its organic reach.Experts think age is another factor in how misinformation spreads online.One study found people 65 and older shared seven times more misinformation on social media during the 2016 election cycle than the youngest age group studied. Researchers say a lack of digital media literacy in seniors could help explain the gap. They’re now pushing initiatives to increase literacy rates.There’s one way researchers found to help stop people from sharing misinformation and that’s a simple reminder to consider the source and accuracy of information before sharing. 1758

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - TV actress Lori Loughlin will serve her prison sentence at the federal correctional institution in Victorville for her role in the college admissions scandal, according to court papers obtained Thursday.A judge signed off on the actress' request to serve her time at the medium-security federal prison camp, according to a Sept. 9 order filed in Boston federal court.Loughlin's husband, clothing designer Mossimo Giannulli, will serve his sentence at the low-security federal prison for men at Lompoc in Santa Barbara County.Loughlin was sentenced on Aug. 21 to two months behind bars -- hours after her husband was handed a five-month term -- for paying 0,000 in bribes to get their daughters admitted to USC as crew team recruits, even though neither girl played the sport.U.S. District Judge Nathaniel M. Gorton ordered the "Full House" star and her husband to self-surrender at their respective prisons on Nov. 19 to begin serving their time.Loughlin was also ordered to pay a 0,000 fine and serve two years of supervised release with 100 hours of community service.Along with his prison term, Giannulli was ordered to pay a 0,000 fine and serve two years of supervised release with 250 hours of community service.Victorville prison camp inmates are housed in "open bay" dormitories, two and four-person cubicles, and four-person rooms. Job positions involve driving, working in food and trash services, plumbing, painting, grounds keeping and education. The institution also operates an auto parts warehouse employing three-dozen female inmates providing inventory services, according to the camp's website.At sentencing, Loughlin told the court that she had "made an awful decision. I went along with a plan to give my daughters an unfair advantage in the college admissions process."The couple were accused of paying half a million dollars in bribes to the admitted mastermind of the scheme, college admissions counselor Rick Singer, to get their daughters, Olivia Jade and Isabella Rose Giannulli, accepted into USC as crew recruits.After a year of insisting on their innocence, the 56-year-old actress pleaded guilty in May to one count of conspiracy to commit wire and mail fraud, while her husband pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit wire and mail fraud and honest services wire and mail fraud.As part of the scheme, they sent fake crew recruiting profiles to Singer that included bogus credentials, medals and photos of one of their daughters on a rowing machine. According to LAPD, the shooting happened at 103rd Street and Main Street around 6:25 p.m. Police say three men and a woman between the ages of 30 and 50 were shot.According to police, several suspects in a gray Hyundai shot the victims. “We must stop this senseless violence,” LAPD Chief Michel Moore said in a tweet. The shooting came as thousands of fans lined the streets of South Los Angeles to honor the life of the slain rapper. The 33-year-old rapper was shot and killed on March 31 in front of The Marathon Clothing store. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Authorities say Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Montana and his wife confronted a home intruder who attempted to kidnap their grandchild over the weekend in California.According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Montana told deputies that his 9-month-old grandchild was sleeping in a playpen Saturday when an unknown woman entered their home in Malibu and grabbed the child.Montana and his wife, Jennifer, confronted the woman and asked her to give back their grandchild.After a tussle, law enforcement officials say Jennifer Montana pried the baby out of the woman's arms.The sheriff’s office says the woman, whom authorities identified as Sodsai Dalzell, fled the home but was later arrested. LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Four people were wounded, one fatally, when gunfire erupted Tuesday morning at a large party taking place at a mansion north of Beverly Hills where police had earlier responded to multiple calls of disturbing the peace.Firefighters and paramedics sent to the 13200 block of Mulholland Drive about 12:45 a.m. located three adults who had been wounded, and they were treated at the scene, then taken to a hospital, according to Nicholas Prange of the Los Angeles Fire Department. A fourth person was found nearby with an injury to his wrist, Prange said, adding the victim's injury was not caused by gunfire.One shooting victim was hospitalized in grave condition and the other two were hospitalized in critical condition, Prange said.A woman about 35 years of age died at a hospital, said Los Angeles Police Department Lt. Chris Ramirez. Information was not immediately available on her identity.Ramirez said the other two shooting victims found at the scene were males, and they were displaying stable vital signs Tuesday morning.A woman who also had been shot went to a hospital in a private vehicle, and was in stable condition, Ramirez said.Ramirez said the crime apparently was gang-related, and no arrests have been reported. No suspect information was immediately available.Ramirez said the shooting was being investigated by detectives from the LAPD West Bureau Homicide office, and he urged anyone with information on the crime to call 213-382-9470.The house had been rented for the party, according to reports from the scene.A video posted to social media captured the sounds of the gunfire, at least six shots initially fired, followed by at least eight more. The video also contained blurry images of what appeared to be two gunshot victims.The Los Angeles Police Department received at least five calls from residents who reported instances of disturbing the peace in the neighborhood beginning about 6:30 p.m. Monday. Responding officers found a large party taking place at a three-story home with about 200 people attending, according to the LAPD.Officers enforced traffic and parking violations, but did not enforce the county's health order banning large gatherings, the department said. Video from NBC4 showed vehicles being ticketed.The organizer of the party, identified by NBC4 only as "Kenny," told the station the party was for his friends and masks were made available to guests, who also had to undergo a temperature check before being allowed inside.No party attendees could be seen wearing masks in video shot by multiple broadcast outlets.A food truck was on site and multiple high-end vehicle, including Lamborghinis and a Rolls Royce, could be seen on the video posted to social media.The party is the second large-scale gathering held amid the coronavirus pandemic in the L.A. area, in spite of public health restrictions barring parties.On Friday night, dozens of people were seen attending a party -- again, mostly without masks or physical distancing -- at the Sassafras Saloon in Hollywood, a gathering that was alleged to have been attended by local law enforcement members. A person familiar with the gathering told the Los Angeles Times the party was planned for members of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, but the agency has denied any involvement in the event and insisted that people seen in online video from the event do not work for the department.The Los Angeles Police Department issued a statement Monday saying it was aware of the gathering and was working to determine if any LAPD employees attended.Los Angeles County public health director Barbara Ferrer said Monday the state Department of Alcohol and Beverage Control was investigating the party, along with the county.
