GUANGZHOU, Sept. 8 (Xinhua)-- The tenth tropical storm this year might strike southeast China Thursday night or Friday, bringing waves as high as six meters, said local flood control officials Wednesday.The storm could make landfall in the coastal areas between eastern Guangdong and southern Fujian Provinces, said Guangdong Provincial Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters in a statement.The storm was tracked at 21 degrees north latitude and 119.4 degrees east longitude in the South China Sea at 6 p.m. For the next 12 hours, it is expected to move westward at a speed of 10 to 15 km per hour, said the statement.Further, the storm was packing wind gusts of 72 kilometers per hour near its center at 6 p.m. Torrential rains of 30 to 80 mm are expected in central and eastern Guangdong if landfall is made.Headquarters officials have asked fishing boats to stay clear of the waters east of the Pearl River estuary. Checks on reservoirs should also be beefed up, they said.

GUANGZHOU, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- Devastating mud-slides triggered by historic rainfalls were blamed for the heavy casualty toll -- 70 dead and 65 missing -- in south China's Guangdong Province when typhoon Fanapi battered the region earlier this week, a government report said Saturday.The loss caused by mud-flows and landslides in Guangdong's mountainous western region is "very serious", said a disaster assessment report conducted by provincial disaster relief authorities. BEIJING, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislator Wu Bangguo has highlighted a nationwide inspection of enforcement of the country's Law on Energy-saving to build a resource-efficient and environment-friendly society.Wu, chairman of the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, made the remarks on Tuesday in an instruction to the committee's inspection.Energy-saving was a pressing and tough issue that involved all industries and occupations, and the inspection should push Chinese companies and corporations to reduce their energy consumption in production and operation, Wu said.The inspection would also promote implementation on the NPC Standing Committee's resolution to deal with climate change and other related Chinese laws and regulations, Wu said.
