What do waffles have to do with severe weather safety?Everything apparently.Believe it or not, FEMA depends on Waffle House to gauge just how dangerous conditions are during hurricanes.It's called the “Waffle House index.”It has three levels: If you see a Waffle House that's open and has a full menu, the area is in the clear.If it has a limited menu, people should probably start making safety plans. That means the restaurant either has no power or is running on a generator.And if it's closed, there's likely severe flooding or damage in the area and people should get to safety. Waffle House locations rarely close, so it has to be a really extreme case of severe weather.“We may have to shut some restaurants down,” says Pat Warner, the director of public relations and external affairs for Waffle House. “That's a little tough for us because all our restaurants are 24/7. We don't know how to turn things off so we really have to shut down a restaurant in an orderly fashion.” Waffle House has a storm center outside of Atlanta. That's where the company tracks the storm and sends out information to its restaurants.But it also has people on the ground looking at conditions. Those people are the ones who have a more accurate view of what's happening and help decide when restaurants should close.Waffle House is prepared with a jump team that actually takes over for regular staff during a storm. Video games allow us to let go and play in someone else's world for a while.At the Smithsonian American Art Museum's recent video game convention, one game is getting a lot of attention for combining beautiful graphics with the ugliness of war. The game is called Brukel and it tells the story of World War II through the eyes of someone who lived it.“This whole thing is obviously a labor of love,” one gamer said of Brukel. “It’s obviously very personal to the creator.”The creator is Bob DeSchutter, an award-winning video game developer and a college professor at Miami University. “In the game, you go in there and you have your cellphone with you,” he says. “You can take pictures of everything, and if you take pictures of an object, you hear my grandma talk about it.”De Schutter traveled to Belgium to have his 93-year-old grandmother, Bie Verlinden, narrate this video game. Verlinden is also the game’s hero, and players shoot a camera instead of a gun. It took De Schutter five years of coding to create Brukel, and the finished product has both his critics' and grandma’s approval.“She’s like, ‘Oh, wow! This looks exactly the way it was,’” De Schutter says about his grandmother’s reaction to the video game. “I’m obviously very happy about that.”The game is also gaining positive attention among parents, who say they are happy to have their children play this game. “It’s a different spin from Fortnite, from Madden and all the other games that they play,” says parent Shaunice Morris. “Now, they’re able to play the game and have fun playing the video game, but also learn while in the process.”It's learning that includes life lessons that span countries and cultures, coming from a woman who lived through war and is now able to share her stories across generations through gaming. 1812

WAVERY, Ohio — One of the women accused of lying to cover up eight rural Ohio slayings in 2016 wants to return to church to teach Sunday school.In a supplemental memorandum asking to modify the conditions of 76-year-old Fredericka Wagner's house arrest filed in Pike County court Jan. 31, her attorney asked Judge Randy Deering to allow Wagner to leave her home to visit Lucasville Mission Church on Sundays from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. in order to attend services from 2 to 3 p.m. and teach Sunday school from 3 to 4 p.m.Wagner has attended services and taught Sunday school at the church "each and every week since 1976," other than when she was caring for her dying husband, her attorney wrote in the court filing.In a letter supporting Wagner's request, Pastor Aaron David Spencer wrote that she "needs the spiritual strength she gains from attending our Praise and Worship.""I can attest to the fact that Fredericka Wagner never missed a service with exception of the time her husband was on hospice ...
