Hundreds gathered at a house party in Howell Township on Sunday, less than a week after New Jersey tightened indoor gathering restrictions because of an increase in the rate of coronavirus transmission.Local police asked for help from Wall, Brick, Jackson, Freehold, Monmouth, and Ocean County Sheriffs and State Police because of the large number of people at the party. There were about 300 people at the party."Most of the attendees are compliant," police said. "Others are hesitant and are directing their anger towards the host who charged admission."Police arrested the host."At one point, we probably had about 500 people here," said Howell Police Sgt. Christian Antunez. "When we got here there were party buses dropping people off."Police said there was admission to get in — for women and for men."Some paid up to 0 for a cabana rental," said Antunez.A flier advertising the pool party on Wilson Drive lists prices and a DJ."I was in disbelief," said Pam Borges, who struggled to get into her own neighborhood when police blocked off all the streets. "My neighbors were talking about them urinating on their cars."It took police two hours to break it up.On Monday, Gov. Phil Murphy attributed many coronavirus cases in the state to parties."We believe that some of this increase is attributable to the number of indoor house parties we’ve been seeing across the state. Indoor gatherings are not safe," he said. This story was originally reported by Aliza Chasan and Christie Duffy at WPIX. 1517

In a move that reminded some people of road trips with their parents, a Delta flight turned around and went back to the gate because passengers were not complying with crew instructions. In a statement from Delta Airlines, Flight 1227 from Detroit to Atlanta on July 23 “returned to the gate following two customers who were non-compliant” with the airline's mask policy. The plane had pulled away from the gate and was still on the ground when it turned around. Delta says crew members asked the two passengers to wear a mask, and they did not.At the gate, the two passengers who did not wear a face covering were removed from the flight. The plane then took off for Atlanta as originally planned. 704

In an order laced with language accusing President Donald Trump of attempting to rewrite immigration laws, a federal judge based in San Francisco temporarily blocked the government late Monday night from denying asylum to those crossing over the southern border between ports of entry.Judge Jon S. Tigar of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California said that a policy announced November 9 barring asylum for immigrants who enter outside a legal check point '"irreconcilably conflicts" with immigration law and the "expressed intent of Congress.""Whatever the scope of the President's authority, he may not rewrite the immigration laws to impose a condition that Congress has expressly forbidden," Tigar wrote, adding that asylum seekers would be put at "increased risk of violence and other harms at the border" if the administration's rule is allowed to go into effect. The temporary restraining order is effective nationwide and will remain in effect until December 19, when the judge has scheduled another hearing, or further order of the court. The order is the latest setback for the administration that has sought to crack down on what it says are flaws in the immigration system, and it is a victory for the American Civil Liberties Union, the Southern Poverty Law Center and other groups who argued it is illegal to block someone based on how they entered the country."This ban is illegal, will put people's lives in danger and raises the alarm about President Trump's disregard for separation of powers," said the ACLU's Lee Gelernt."There is no justifiable reason to flatly deny people the right to apply for asylum, and we cannot send them back to danger based on the manner of their entry," he said.Earlier this month, the President issued a proclamation referring to "large, organized groups" who were traveling through Mexico and "reportedly intend to enter the United States unlawfully or without proper documentation and to seek asylum."It said that those seeking entry can only do so temporarily at recognized ports of entry to allow for "orderly processing" and denied entry to those at any other location along the southern border. 2178

If you get a letter in the mail from the IRS, you might want to open it.In an attempt to track down some Americans who did not receive an economic impact check earlier this year, the IRS said on Thursday it is sending 9 million letters to Americans who do not file a traditional tax return. The letter will encourage recipients of the letter to visit the IRS.gov before an Oct. 15 deadline to register for a stimulus check. For most Americans, the checks are worth ,200.“The IRS continues to work hard to reach people eligible for these payments,” said IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig. “These mailings are the latest step by the IRS to reach as many people as possible for these important payments. We are releasing this state-by-state information so that state and local leaders and organizations can better understand the size of this population in their communities and assist them in claiming these important payments. Time is running out to claim a payment before the deadline.”But the IRS says just because you receive a letter does not automatically make you eligible. To be eligible, the IRS requires that an individual is a US citizen or resident alien, have a work-eligible Social Security Number and can’t be claimed as a dependent on someone else’s return.Americans who earn less than ,200 a year, or married couples earning less than ,400 a year, are not required to submit a federal tax return. These Americans, if they did not apply for a stimulus check, would have been excluded from receiving a check unless they earn another form of government income, such as Social Security. Those who believe they are eligible for a check don’t have to wait for the letter. A tool is available on the IRS’ webpage by clicking here.As a reminder, here is who is eligible for a stimulus check:,400 – Couples earning less than 0,000 a year (couples earning 0,000 - 8,000 will receive a prorated check).,200 – Individuals earning less than ,000 a year (individuals earning ,000 - ,000 will receive a prorated check).,200 – Heads of households earning less than 2,500 (heads of households earning 2,500 - 6,000 will receive a prorated check).0 - Each dependent child age 16 or under as of Dec. 31, 2019 (for qualifying individuals and couples). 2291
