For the second time in a week, a potential school shooting was thwarted by a tipster who gave authorities a heads up -- this time in the town of Middlebury, Vermont.Authorities launched an investigation last week after a student told the principal at Middlebury Union Middle that she or he overheard two teens planning to attack another student, police said.Though interviews with multiple students, investigators learned that a 14-year-old planned to go to the school Tuesday at noon "and shoot a specific student, one in which he had problems with, and anyone else."The second student involved allegedly said he could obtain a weapon from a relative."They provided us this information in pretty graphic detail," Middlebury police Chief Tom Hanley told CNN affiliate WPTZ. "As to what the plans were, very specific: date and time, target, where this was going to happen... very specific. As opposed to the normal kind of idle chatter where there's nothing specific at all."Working with social workers, counselors and the State's Attorney Office, police had one student taken to Porter Medical Center for psychiatric counseling and treatment. The firearms from the other student's relatives were seized pending a court hearing, though police say the relative had no knowledge of the students' plans. All of the relatives' firearms were secured in safes, police said. The middle school "will deal with both students per their internal policies," as the investigation continues, police said.School Superintendent Peter Burrows said he was thankful for the student who decided to speak up."Students talking to each other and reaching out to us and then allowing us to work with police and take care of it is huge," Burrows told CNN affiliate WCAX.Middlebury, a town of around 8,500 people, is located about 35 miles south of Burlington.Last week, police in Richmond, Indiana, killed a teen they said was bent on committing violence at a middle school after receiving notice of the teen's plan. Lauding the tipster, Indiana State Police Sgt. John Bowling said, "Someone knew something, and they said something." 2117

Ghost kitchens are starting to pop up around the country as new ways to get the same food from familiar restaurants. CEO Paul Damico has restaurants in six states. However, with his newest kitchen called Naf Naf, he’s trying something different. “It’s very unique to train your staff that they'll never see a customer,” he explains. “It's a very different business model.” The type of kitchens Damico is describing is what some call “ghost kitchens,” which are strictly a place to cook. There are no servers and no dining rooms. "I've been operating restaurants for 35 years and they're capital intensive, they’re high risk, and they take years to come out of the ground,” Damico says. “This is the complete opposite of that.”Jim Collins’s business Kitchen United houses several ghost kitchens. “This was a culinary school location originally, and the culinary school closed, and it was perfect for us, because it's a bunch of kitchens in a big building,” Collins says. The Kitchen United model helps to efficiently feed the demand of a growing number of people, especially millennials, who want to eat restaurant food but stay at home. "We're really at an intersection, a shift, in the way consumers are dining,” says Collins. “And because consumers are dining in a new way, the restaurant industry can serve consumers in new way.”The company operates locations in Chicago and Pasadena, but they’re expanding. "Maybe one day, the drones are [going to] land at Kitchen United and take our food out to the masses; that would be awesome,” says Damico. 1564

Houston officers have arrested a man they say fired a gun at the car of a family of four after an apparent "road rage incident," igniting the newly-purchased fireworks inside.Bayron J. Rivera, 18, is in custody and will be charged with four counts of aggravated assault, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said Sunday. Rivera surrendered to investigators, he said. The children, a 1-year-old and a 2-year-old, sustained "severe burns" Thursday night and had to be life flighted for their injuries, according to Deputy Tom Turner with the Harris County Sheriff's Office violent crimes unit.Turner told reporters Thursday at the scene that two men had "exchanged words" and pulled into a gas station parking lot. Both men got out of their vehicles and one of them took out a firearm, Turner said. The other man, who had just purchased fireworks nearby, Turner said, returned to his car and started to leave with his wife and two children. That's when the suspect fired into their car, Turner said. One of the rounds hit the fireworks inside, "causing the fireworks to explode" and "catching the vehicle on fire."The man started to drive away but stopped, according to Turner. Some "good Samaritans" stopped to help the family and took them to a nearby urgent care clinic. The children were then life flighted to the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston with "severe burns," the deputy said. The mother and father were also transported to a hospital. The suspect, who fled the scene, was described by the victim as a mixed-race man in his 20s, Turner said. He was believed to be driving a light-colored, newer model Ford Expedition and he may have been with a woman and two other people.Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact the 1764

HARTFORD, Conn. – The nation's two largest teachers unions are calling on schools to revise or eliminate active shooter drills. The American Federation of Teachers and National Education Association issued a report Tuesday with the advocacy group Everytown for Gun Safety Support. They assert that simulating a school shooting can harm the mental health of students and educators. They say schools should instead concentrate on training teachers to respond to emergencies. Jean-Paul Guilbault, the chief executive of the Alice Training Institute, which runs active shooter drills, says they are effective when done appropriately. 641
