SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The migrant caravan is still over a thousand miles away but troops are getting ready to deploy to the San Diego Tijuana border. Locally, Border Patrol says they can’t answer any questions about the increased military presence, only that they are monitoring the situation. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Tourists and locals alike can enjoy one of San Diego's most famous landmarks Saturday for free in honor of National Public Lands Day.The National Park Service is offering free entry at Cabrillo National Monument, and other U.S. landmarks, as part of its "fee-free" days throughout the year. The last free admission day of the year is Nov. 11 in honor of Veterans Day.Not only that, but Saturday also marks the day when Cabrillo first sailed into San Diego Bay in 1542.RELATED: Six great San Diego spots where you can unwindOn Saturday, guests can also learn about how 16th century explorers navigated with such accurate results, or go inside the Fort Rosecrans bunkers at the site that date back to World War II. Living history re-enactors will be in attendance to walk guests through the Age of Exploration.Films are also shown daily at the monument covering Cabrillo, the lighthouse, and nearby aquatic life. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- America’s Freedom Bell, which has been traveling across the country for years, officially has a permanent home in San Diego.Wednesday, the bell was unveiled at its new home at the Veterans Museum in Balboa Park. Before that, it was kept in a storage facility in between travels.Richard Rovsek, a Rancho Santa Fe resident and founder of the Spirit of Liberty Foundation, drew up a design for the bell on a napkin during a meal. 72 hours later he learned it would become a reality.Rovsek created the bell to give Americans a chance to ring it and honor the men and women who served our nation. Five million Americans have rung the bell so far.“It’s closure for families,” said Rovesek.The bell was cast on June 6, 2013 with full military honors on the 69th anniversary of D-Day. It has traveled to Independence Hall, Arlington Cemetery, Pearl Harbor, Normandy Beach and more. It will continue to travel occasionally, but will forever call San Diego home. On the bell are the timeless words “Honor Our Armed Forces Past, Present and Future.” It includes emblems for every branch of the military and contains 11 pounds of steel from the World Trade Center.Wednesday, the Spirit of Liberty Foundation and The Veterans Museum at Balboa Park also announced the creation of “America’s Patriotic Honor Roll” which will include the names of more than 100 million veterans who have served since 1776. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Two San Diego nursing homes are now dealing with positive cases of COVID-19. La Vida Real, an assisted living center in Rancho San Diego, confirmed to 10News that four of its staff members have tested positive for coronavirus.The facility is one of 32 owned by the Senior Resource Group. It’s the second local assisted living center to be hit with COVID-19. This Wednesday, San Diego County officials confirmed to 10News a positive case at Stellar Care Center, just south of the College Area. Across the country, concerns over the spread of the virus in nursing homes keeps growing: In Kirkland, Washington, an outbreak at the Life Care assisted living center lead to at least 35 reported deaths. In Louisiana, eleven deaths have now been linked to a retirement community out of New Orleans. In Mount Laurel, New Jersey, three patients at a nursing home have now died after testing positive.La Vida Real issued a statement to 10News, detailing how the company is handling the coronavirus cases:"La Vida Real has communicated with residents and their families, and is in close contact with San Diego County health officials, after learning that four staff members in our assisted living and memory care building tested positive for COVID-19. We are monitoring the situation closely and requiring all staff in the assisted living and memory care building to wear masks when inside the building and use personal protective equipment when interacting with residents showing any symptoms, per CDC guidelines. Out of an abundance of caution we are also working with the health department to test one additional employee and four residents in memory care.We will continue to follow CDC and public health department guidance and take the steps necessary to protect the health and safety of residents and staff. We are committed to continue the rigorous protective measures and precautionary actions we have implemented in this challenging environment. And while the effects of this virus are impacting everyone, we take protecting our residents and employees very seriously."Additionally, the organization says they continue to take extensive precautionary measures for residents and staff at the community, including:Visits are limited to essential visitors only. San Diego (KGTV)- After a second vote, a marijuana production facility is given the green light to move forward. Dozens of people, on both sides of the issue, were there as city leaders made their decision. Planning commissioners voted 4 to 2, giving business leaders the conditional use permit they needed to move ahead with plans. “We’re elated that the decision was in our favor,” says Jared Angell, CFO of THinC. “We followed all the rules and regulations and were glad to see that the planning commission could uphold that.”Business leaders were hoping for this decision after a deadlock vote of 3 to 3 last week. The over 21,000 square feet building on Ruffner Road will be used for the marijuana production site. During today’s vote, some planning commissioners asked that the building, moving forward, be more transparent by adding more windows. Commissioners also requested storage items be housed on the top level. Community members were concerned about the safety and future of their neighborhood, but business leaders say ThinC is committed to working with everyone.“We reached out to a lot of local business and community members, and we’ve been working with them to ensure that our business will not negatively affect them in any way,” says Angell. “It sends a strong message about the strength of community,” says community member Ping Wang. “I would be overjoyed for our community coming together, banning together, and supporting each other.”The site will be used for manufacturing and distributing marijuana products. As they are still in the planning stages, there is no word yet on when the facility will be in business. 1649
