SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Father Joe's Villages hosted two Thanksgiving meal services Wednesday for homeless residents in San Diego, but perhaps no one was more thankful than the people who helped prepare the food.Three chefs-in-training in the Father Joe’s Culinary Arts Program spent days preparing the turkey dinner, which was served to an estimated 2,300 to 2,600 people.“They changed my life by far,” student Brian Anziano said of Father Joe’s.Anziano said he got involved in “stupid stuff” last year that left him homeless, but at the suggestion of friend, he began turning his life around with the help of Father Joe’s.Anziano enrolled in the 15-week culinary course, considered the most rigorous of the 10 workforce development programs offered by Father Joe’s.“They buy your shoes, they buy your pants, they buy your uniform,” he said. “Everything you need.”The massive Thanksgiving meal is kind of like a midterm, said Culinary Arts Program instructor chef Theresa Fields.“We work 14 hour days, 16 hour days. We’re always on call,” said student Lister Lane with a smile.Lane said his dream is to graduate and open his own restaurant. “And I want to give back to the homeless like they helped me,” he said.Past graduates have gone from these kitchens to jobs at Kansas City Barbeque, PETCO Park, the Hard Rock Hotel, Amplified Ale Works and more, FIelds said.Father Joe’s said about 80 students have graduated from its various workforce training programs so far, and they’re on pace to graduate about 100 students by the end of the year. According to figures from AAA, the price for a gallon of gas gone up more than 50 cents in less than a month. AAA also says that the price has risen for 21 consecutive days and 27 of the last 28 days in San Diego County. RELATED: San Diego's gas prices could soon hit average, something not seen for yearsThe price per-gallon is more than 20 cents more than a week ago, 51.7 cents more than a month ago and over 27 cents higher than a year ago. California's gas tax is also set to increase by 5.6 cents on July 1, 2019. Meanwhile, the national average for a gallon of gas Monday was .74.AAA says a series of refinery issues reduced gas supplies.Bloomberg Phillips 66 refinery in Los Angeles, and Chevron Corp.'s El Segundo plants all experienced shut downs and stalls in oil production due to various problems. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — For the first time Tuesday, 12-year-old Kiera Latulippe faced the man who killed her entire family in a drunk driving crash. The Valley Center girl was in the car with her family headed to the Austin, Texas, airport after vacation when the drunk driver hit their car head-on. Her father, Scott; mother, Nancy, and 14-year-old brother, Jackson, all died. Kiera was the only one to survive. On Friday, Guy Brasted was sentenced to 18 years in prison. After the sentencing, Kiera and her uncle and legal guardian, Mark Latulippe, took the stand with an emotional message for Brasted. "It made me miss out on so much, like daddy daughter dances," Kiera said, listing the things she can't do now that her family has been ripped away from her. Everyday I think about him," Kiera said.Since the accident happened two years ago, Latulippe has taken his niece into his own care."I can't replace, I'm a fill-in parent for someone who has tragically had everything robbed from her in one moment," Latulippe says.Latulippe is a CHP officer for California Highway Patrol.
