CHULA VISTA (KGTV) – Chula Vista police are investigating an overnight carjacking and kidnapping involving perpetrators disguised as law enforcement.The incident was reported just before midnight Tuesday in the Rancho Del Rey III neighborhood in East Chula Vista.Police said a group of men, armed with guns and wearing bullet proof vests, were driving in two white Ford Expedition SUV’s, which appeared to look like squad vehicles. Two people wearing vests with the word 'police' on the front ordered him to get out of his Renault Koleos SUV. Police said the victim believed the suspects had a gun. He got into one of their SUVs and was driven to Paseo Del Rey Park, located between Telegraph Canyon Road and East J Street. The suspects released the victim unharmed at the park, according to police.The victim walked 40 minutes to a residence on J Street to call 9-1-1, police said. He was not hurt in the incident, police said.The suspect vehicles and the stolen SUV are still outstanding, according to police. (KGTV) - A South Bay public official is doubling down on anti-Muslim comments as he prepares a campaign to become Chula Vista's mayor.Hector Gastelum resisted calls to resign from the Otay District Water Board in 2017 after his tweets referred to Muslims as sub-human scum. He just qualified for the June run-off to become the Mayor of Chula Vista, the county's second largest city.In an interview, Gastelum said he isn't backing down from his prior controversial comments. "How can you not condemn rape? How can you not condemn pedophilia? Or throwing gays from the roof," Gastelum said, clarifying he is not referring to all Muslims. "If people don't like what I stand for, they can vote for the person that's going to take more taxes from them."Hanif Mohebi, who runs the San Diego chapter of the Council of American Islamic Relations, called Gastelum's comments bigoted and hateful."Are we referring to other criminals by their religion?" he said. "(Charleston church shooter) Dylan Roof and many others. Are we referring to others by their religion? If not, then why are we singling out this community and referring to them by their religion."Gastelum is running against Incumbent Mary Salas, teacher Arthur Kende, and Parks Supervisor Daniel Schreck for the seat. Cigarette use among American adults is at the lowest it's been since the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention started collecting data on the issue in 1965, according to a report released Thursday."The good news is that cigarette smoking has reached unprecedented lows, which is a tremendous public health win, down to 14 percent from over 40 percent in the mid-1960s," said Brian King, senior author of the report and deputy director for research translation at the CDC's Office on Smoking and Health. About 47.4 million Americans, or 19.3%, used any tobacco product in 2017, the report says.He believes that the decline is due to proven interventions, such as smoke-free policies and rises in the price of tobacco products.As stated in the report, the data is from the National Health Interview Survey, "an annual, nationally representative, in-person survey of the noninstitutionalized U.S. civilian population." The 2017 sample included 26,742 adults and had a response rate of 53%.Researchers assessed the use of five types of tobacco products: cigarettes, cigars, pipes (including water pipes and hookahs), e-cigarettes and smokeless tobacco (such as snuff or dip)."During 2016-2017 declines occurred in current use of any tobacco product; any combustible tobacco product, [two or more] tobacco products; cigarettes; and smokeless tobacco," the report says.King added, "on balance, we still have some public health hurdles in that there is still 47 million Americans that are using some form of tobacco products, and we still have significant disparities among the groups in the country in terms of tobacco product use."So, who is still using these products, and what are they using?Beyond the 14% of Americans smoking cigarettes, 3.8% are smoking cigars, 2.8% are using e-cigarettes or vaping, 2.1% use smokeless tobacco products, and 1% are using pipes.Males (24.8%) were more likely to be smoking than females (14.2%). The highest age group for smoking was among those between 25 to 44 (22.5%); those 65 and older smoked the least (11%). Southerners and Midwesterners (20.8% and 23.5%, respectively) smoked more than those in the Northeast (15.6%) and the West (15.9%)The researchers also looked at race, education level, income level, sexuality, insurance provider and marital status to determine smoking rates.Although cigarettes are the leading cause of tobacco-related deaths and diseases in the country, according to King, he also believes other tobacco products, such as e-cigarettes, need to be considered to continue declining rates of overall tobacco product use."It's critical that we not only modernize our strategies in terms of population but also modernize our interventions to be sure that we are capturing the full diversity of tobacco products that the American public are using," King said. 2850

Churches across the country are doing what they can to connect to parishioners from a distance. Now, some are switching from online back to in-person during this pandemic."It wasn't easy. It wasn't the best, but our people did well with it, and we tried to make the best of that situation. We had a lot of people that would come into the church to help put things together technically and musically and that sort of thing. And all that time, trying to maintain proper distancing," explained Dean Ropp, pastor of Midway Community Church in Georgia.From Zoom bible studies to prayer meetings over the phone, Ropp says their parishioners continue to tune in and stay engaged. But many still desired that in-person connection to their church. So Midway Community Church started offering their Sunday service in-person."As time went on, we were looking for ways we could get back together safely, and in our context, we decided with our size and facilities, we would try outdoor services,” the pastor said. “We have done outdoor services before, because we wanted to and so we knew how to do it.”Midway Community Church already had a stage that was set up in a grove of oak and pecan trees on their property, plus other equipment that they could move outdoors. They put in some extra precautions to keep people safe, like having people bring their own chairs."Then, we also, in this case, rather than sitting close together like we'd like to, we have cones set up for every family or individual, so everyone keeps a little eye on their distancing and that sort of thing," said Pastor Ropp.While attendance was terrific, Pastor Ropp decided they'd only hold the outdoor services every three weeks to ensure they weren't spreading the coronavirus. The outdoor services are one extra way for the church to stay connected with people since some aren't too keen on online church services or have had a hard time keeping up with church events because of the pandemic.Pastor Ropp says people were appreciative of the fact that they could still get together and physically be at church, even if it was from a distance."I can’t tell you how grateful we all were to be able to do it, the first time especially. It’s really carried that enthusiasm each time because we do love being together. That’s part of who we are as a church," said Pastor Ropp.As for how long churches across the country will be able to maintain an outdoor or online presence with their community, time and COVID-19 statistics will tell. Outdoor services may be difficult in the winter.Pastor Ropp says they're taking things month by month and brainstorming different ways to keep their church community together."There are a number of ideas we’ve had in how we would do it, whether it would be online registration or do it by classes the different groups were connected with,” he said. “So, there's a couple options we can do. We’re hoping we can get through it without going to that.”He says some people who may be suffering during the pandemic may need their local church now more than ever, so he hopes people who do belong to a church can continue to stay plugged into whatever services being offered. 3171

CHULA VISTA, Calif., (KGTV)- It has been one week since the brutal attack and rape of a young woman at Otay Park. But Chula Vista Police say their investigation is far from over. Now nearby schools are reminding parents to stay vigilant. Chula Vista Police said last Monday, a woman in her 20’s was exercising on the stairs at Otay Park. But on her way down, someone pushed her from behind, knocking her unconscious.The perpetrator then raped her, stole her things, and ran.When she woke up, she managed to flag someone down at the park, who then called 9-1-1.It has been seven days into the investigation. But the Chula Vista police department says the perpetrator is still at large. Detectives are now reviewing and enhancing several pieces of video evidence.They are also waiting to get the results of the victim’s rape kit. Last week, Otay Elementary School Pirincipal, Monica Castillo sent a letter to parents addressing the recent crime that happened next to school property. 1009
