Perhaps you'll be enjoying the sun and sand at one of the top 10 beaches in the USA.For 2018, Kapalua Bay Beach in Maui is No. 1, according to coastal sciences professor Dr. Beach.Dr. Beach, also known as Stephen P. Leatherman, has been releasing an annual list of the United States' top beach destinations since 1991. Leatherman is professor and director of the Laboratory for Coastal Research at Florida International University.He uses 50 criteria to assess the beaches -- from water and sand quality to amenities, pests and views and vistas.Kapalua, a gorgeous white-sand crescent, is billed as perfect for swimming and snorkeling, and fish food and snorkeling gear are available from a concession hut at the north end of the beach.Lined by palm trees, the beach is protected from waves by the "arms" of lava flows, creating an area teeming with colorful fish.The second-ranked beach is nearly 5,000 miles away on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Ocracoke Lifeguarded Beach is located on Ocracoke Island, which is only accessible via private boat or ferry.Rounding out the top three, the mile-long beach at Grayton Beach State Park is located in a 2,000-acre park on Florida's Panhandle. GRANTVILLE, CA (KGTV) - A temporary relocation is becoming permanent for one Navy sailor.A driver backed into a hydrant in February causing flooding to 10 units at the Mission Heights Condominiums in Grantville.Cody Downs was among the affected and hoping to move back in after his apartment was repaired, all while others affected moved out.The active duty sailor says he was told by the management association in February that he could likely move back in by March. “It was just missed deadline after missed deadline,” said Downs.On Tuesday, Downs signed his 30-day clearance notice after the owner he was renting from told him they were selling the unit because of mounting delays from the management association and contractor.“I was intending on living here for the foreseeable future,” said Downs, “to have that taken away from me without any regard or any doing is just devastating.”The management company for the building First Service Residential could not provide a comment but said over the phone that repairing the affected apartments was ’98% resolved.’Downs is searching for a new place now, but he just wishes he didn’t take them for their word. "There was no verification process and I just kept giving trust and trust and maybe in a way I was the betrayed fool,” said Downs, “at the end of the day I lost my home.”  1375

Henry Gonzales isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty or clean up his community.He started working on farm fields at 13 and saw firsthand the struggles of migrant farmworkers.“I remember the terror on the face of coworkers back then when immigration would drive, stop by,” he said.Gonzales has since worked his way from farmhand to Agricultural Commissioner of Monterey County the fourth largest agricultural producing county in the country.Producing .4 billion worth of produce in 2019, Gonzales is now looking to protect the area’s products and the 60,000-plus agricultural industry workers.“It’s critically important not just for them but for everybody that eats that produce,” he said.Gonzales’ team recently introduced a hotline for farmworkers and their families to report safety concerns, ranging from COVID-19 to smoke from the nearby wildfires.Staffed by agricultural inspector biologists 24/7, 365 days a year, Gonzales calls this hotline the first of its kind in the country and industry leaders are taking notice.“It causes a lot more appreciation for those hands that are harvesting our crops,” said Norm Groot, executive director of the Monterey County Farm Bureau.He believes this hotline can help improve working conditions and the agricultural industry overall.With Hispanics and Latinos, ethnic groups that make up most farmworkers in the area, accounting for more than 75% of the confirmed COVID-19 cases in Monterey Country, this hotline comes at a time where it’s needed more than ever.“I think it’s critical that we have some sort of avenue that farmworkers can feel that they have a voice,” Groot said.The funding for this hotline comes from the county’s pesticide budget.While callers can remain anonymous, Gonzales understands the hesitations.“Many of them are concerned if they call, they complain that there might be retaliatory measures taken against them,” he said. “So, we do reassure them that there are laws to protect them from retaliation.”From farmhand to government leader, Gonzales has worked his way up in the agricultural industry and hopes this hotline inspires others to take similar actions.“We’ve just increased the standard as it were for everyone in the state, other ag commissioners and other agencies to do the same,” he said.To contact the hotline, call 831-809-2394. 2324
