SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego City Council on Monday will honor area residents who assisted victims in the Las Vegas mass shooting that left 58 concert-goers dead and hundreds of others wounded.Councilwoman Lorie Zapf plans to introduce a proclamation declaring "Las Vegas Unsung Heroes Recognition Day" in San Diego.In it, she calls the Oct. 1 shooting at a country music festival "one of the most horrific events in American history" and lauds Taylor Winston, Jenn Lewis, Officer Max Verduzco, Officer Tom McGrath and his wife, Tiffany.RELATED: Brother of Las Vegas shooting victim Jennifer Irvine urges educator-only pension to divest in gunsShe said Winston -- an ex-Marine living in Ocean Beach -- and Lewis, his girlfriend, found a truck with its keys in the ignition and used it to rush about two dozen shooting victims to a hospital.Verduzco knocked over a fence, allowing the crowd to escape the scene, according to Zapf. "They humbly accept this praise, but they are quick to recognize the many unsung heroes who also stepped up to the plate to help their fellow concert-goers to safety."A spokeswoman for Zapf said the five named in the proclamation all plan to attend the event at a City Council meeting.The gunman, 64-year-old Stephen Paddock, opened fire from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino into the crowd at the Route 91 Harvest Country Music Festival during a performance by Jason Aldean. And while we were tying to get (security personnel's) attention and tending to her, the second round of (gunfire) came on, and I remember I just grabbed my wife ... and I just pulled her close to me, and I laid on top of her, and I tried putting her on top of the (wounded) girl, and still everybody had their hands on top of mine."He said he helped Tiffany and others scale a fence, climbed over himself and realized he'd become separated from his wife. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The historic Hotel del Coronado is reopening Friday, ending the first closure in the hotel's 132-year history.The famous red-roofed hotel on Coronado Island's Orange Avenue closed with other hotels in late March as the COVID-19 pandemic reached San Diego.Hotels have started to reopen in June, following state and county public health guidelines. The Hotel del Coronado, a major tourist attraction, will reopen with limited amenities and reduced occupancy.Hotel del Coronado General Manager Harold Rapoza told 10News guests and hotel staff can expect to feel safe and comfortable after numerous modifications."We disinfect all the high-touch areas, including the light switches, remote control, door handles. We sanitize the entire room, and then we put a seal on the outside of the door so when guests do check in, they know that no one has accessed the room. They are the first person to access the room since it was cleaned and disinfected," Rapoza said.Rapoza added face coverings/masks will be required for all hotel staff and guests while in public areas. He also said there will be sanitation stands and cleaning wipes around the resort.Rapoza said as soon as they learned the hotel would be allowed to reopen, staff worked "fast and furious" to meet new health and safety guidelines."This is a very busy resort in the summer. There's a lot of foot traffic and we wanted to make sure we could manage through the guidelines. We want everyone to come and enjoy the Del and see the Del this summer. We're excited to show them our new amenities and our new protocols," he told 10News.The luxury villas the Beach Village at The Del will also open Friday. The hotel's main pool and Cabana guestrooms will remain closed until at least July 19 until upgrades are completed.Until the pool reopens, hotel management said guests will be able to borrow sand chairs for the beach and umbrellas for free. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - One person was killed today in a fiery collision near Fairbanks Ranch Country Club.The crash, which involved a big rig and another vehicle, happened at about 12:30 p.m. in the 14900 block of San Dieguito Road in the North City area, according to San Diego police.The accident forced a closure of the roadway in the area to allow for investigation and cleanup, SDPD public affairs Sgt. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego County Board of Supervisors today unanimously approved spending million in federal pandemic-related funding to help child care providers, testing in schools and meals for senior citizens.The board directed million to child care providers, who have been struggling to stay afloat since March, in the form of grants.The county will also spend .8 million on senior food programs -- including an expanded Great Plates program that involves prepared meals delivered to the elderly -- while also supporting participating restaurants.The board voted to spend million to support the county Department of Public Health's testing, tracing and treatment strategy dedicated for kindergarten through 12th-grade schools.Last month, the board directed the county's chief administrative officer to make recommendations on how to spend the money.To implement the child care grants, CAO Helen Robbins-Meyer will negotiate agreements with The San Diego Foundation, the YMCA of San Diego County and Child Development Associates, Inc.Supervisor Jim Desmond said while he has been critical of Great Plates program, based on the costs per meal, he understands it helps restaurants while also helping shut-in seniors who may not have any social interaction otherwise.Desmond added that if there's money left over from the program or school testing, it should go towards area food banks.In related actions following an update on county COVID-19 prevention efforts, the board approved Desmond's motion for a waiver to the school- closures mandate.The board also approved a separate motion allowing county enforcement of businesses -- in terms of complying with reopening requirements -- based on Phase 2 mandates. 1741

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego City Councilman Chris Cate will unveil 190 new parking spaces in the congested Convoy District in Kearny Mesa Tuesday before the City Council reviews that neighborhood's community plan."If you've been to the Convoy District, you know that finding a parking space can be extremely challenging," Cate said."My office has unwaveringly supported the small businesses in this hub for Asian cuisine and culture. To ensure this community project came to fruition, we spent countless days working side-by-side with business owners to ensure they were included in this process. Angled parking is the tip of the iceberg for the entire Kearny Mesa Community Plan process."Kearny Mesa was founded in 1937. Over the past eight decades, the commercially and industrially dense neighborhood has transformed into an iconic San Diego community, featuring the Convoy District, which recently formed a "Pan Asian Cultural District."Cate, in June of 2016, began the process of implementing angled parking in the Convoy District at the community's request. Two years later during his State of the District address, he announced the installation of 200 angled parking spaces would immediately begin.A total of 190 angled parking spaces have been added in the neighborhood, including 45 on Dagget Street, 80 on Vickers Street and 65 on Opportunity Road.The existing community plan for Kearny Mesa has not been updated since 1992. For the past two years, the San Diego's Planning Department has led the Kearny Mesa Community Plan update to determine how Kearny Mesa will develop in the future.
